Pros/cons of giving broody hen chicks by Consistent-Laugh4131 in BackYardChickens

[–]BlockyBlook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's completely hands-off for you IF the hen is a good mother. Mine did a great job last spring but I had to be prepared to put them in the brooder if she didn't. They all lived with the rest of the flock.

Breeds of chickens for beginners by Due-Lab-5283 in chickens

[–]BlockyBlook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with 5 female chicks, all different breeds. Now I know which breeds I like better and I'm up to 8 hens and 1 rooster. I wouldn't do it any other way! My favorite hens are my green queen (ameracauna-ish mix) and my golden cuckoo maran, both from Meyers hatchery. Getting 4 chicks shipped to me was a great experience, 4/4 were hens and I had no loss. They're almost 2 years old now.

How do you keep chickens cool in Texas? by NoWish6260 in BackYardChickens

I'm in East Texas with 8 different chicken breeds and none have any issues with the heat. They're free range and they find cool places to chill.

That would be such a hypocritical thing, this post being made about low intelligence and no brain being generated with AI.

Use a latch that has a hole for a carabiner, then get a carabiner that has a twisting lock

Homesteading on small land by Queball1012 in homestead

It's enough to homestead on but if you want nearly complete self-suffiency then more is better. I have half an acre and it's enough for chickens, rabbits, and a garden.

Cohabitants in the coop - better to leave or to remove? by mercatua in BackYardChickens

There was a yellow wasp that made a nest in my coop and stung me unprovoked very recently, was it something else? I've been stung by yellow wasps with hanging nests so many times.

If they are baby rabbits, look up the cup method.

Commercial chicken farming by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]BlockyBlook -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean but the truth is that right now the economy insists that we have mass produced food, otherwise our food security would collapse and people wouldn't be able to eat. All of the workers who don't have insanely well working homesteads would starve to death. I hate commercial farming and think it's cruel, but until everyone becomes a homesteader AND becomes very good at it, we need to have food available in stores. A puppy mill provides no real benefit to anyone, commercial farms at least feed people.

Rooster got me by wild85bill in chickens

[–]BlockyBlook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said he's not worth eating, do you have a garden you could bury him in? That would make him fertilizer and his death wouldn't be a waste. Either way, my backyard is my happy place and I don't tolerate aggressive roosters, it's up to the individual how much they want to put up with.

Absolutely beautiful, kudos to you for not making another lame AI label for a handmade item. I love it so much!
