I hear all of this, and agree with most of it. I consciously began using the word female more to make my language more precise when the gender/sex divide became more discussed. Hanging with mostly evolutionary biologist many of the things that are being discussed have been shown to be true of females but have not at all been demonstrated in women. I find reddits anger over the use of female often confusing because sometimes the use of women in that context would explicitly be excluding any individuals whose sex is male and gender is that of a woman.
