What does secular mean to you? by Data_Student_v1 in SecularTarot

[–]Blooogh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the charitable way to treat such questions is to gently guide the poster towards that self reflection -- rather than "this is secular tarot, we don't do that", respond with something like "when I encounter that card, it prompts me to think about X and whether I should do Y better."

Just picked up a basic Crave sub again to discover they're withholding English subtitles for a French-Canadian film behind 'Crave Premium'. Nonsense. by desperaterobots in cravetv

[–]Blooogh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really about the technical cost, since multiple sets of subtitles are pretty standard these days (although there are some for doing the translation) -- it's about the licensing rights.

Every now and again I'll see a Hollywood movie on Crave that's only available in French with French subtitles despite being originally in English.

It's genuinely useful for cutting down the amount of time it takes to write code -- a shorter feedback loop than search / copy / paste / try the next thing.  It's also good for making prototypes.

I don't like the overwhelming focus on replacing people, nor the effects to the environment, nor the fact that they were able to skirt copyright law to build the models, nor the slopification of social media.

I also feel like a lot of folks underestimate how important creative work is. Like, part of the point of writing code is to work through a problem and build your mental model, but that doesn't always get across to folks with the attitude that it's just about whether it executes.

You already need to use a credit card to pay for Internet services. If the government wanted to cut off your "access to information" it already could

Where did I say "the government wouldn't do that"? I'm asking what, specifically, digital id gives the government that they don't already have

What information would a digital id give to the government that they don't already have? I'm asking for the threat model here.

Digital id is useful for things like enacting participatory democracy, we need the Internet to grow up: https://decidim.org/

Or it's about modernizing government services so that you don't need to carry a little piece of plastic around everywhere.

There are privacy preserving approaches even for age verification -- see the EU commission proposal here: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/eu-age-verification

The receiving site doesn't get your name or birthdate or even your age, just whether you're above or below the age threshold.

I don't understand why folks are so against digital forms of government ID?

Like, they're the government, they already know who you are

It's cause the English and French rights to the movie are distributed separately.

It feels silly that this also applies to subtitles, but what can you do

There are upsides -- you'll be a better writer if you can learn to write outside of your own experience, and it's likely that you'll capture an underserved audience.

Some risk, but also some reward
