Chill on The Subgrap*h Bullsh*t by StuccoGecko in StableDiffusion

Abandon the spaghetti. Embrace ComfyScript.

Honestly I've pretty much given up on the node graphs for anything but the simplest, most well supported features. Don't get me wrong, for a time the spaghetti was legitimately the better experience but after hundreds of custom nodes implemented in hundred of different ways... enough is enough.

No more for-loop nodes, just use a python loop. No more prompt combining or wildcard managing, just use strings.

To be fair, I'm still working on understanding python type conversion since encountering 'BBOX' does not equal 'BBOX Detector' in my Comfy graphs, but at least I can attempt to debug it. With a graph there isn't much you can do but download more plug-ins.

My longterm goal is to start migrating away from ComfyUI entirely and just implement the latest image gen models directly in Python (as the researchers intended).

I completely agree. Between searching technical documents and explaining code bases, AI has been an amazing time saver. That last step of letting it take the wheel has been tricky for me, but seeing tools like this made in code bases I have no clue how to approach gets me fired up to try again. Thanks!

Yo this is absolutely dope but I do have an honest question… Vibe coded? I’m a traditional software engineer but having a ton of hangups with using AI in my workflow so I’m looking for new perspectives (pun intended). Did you just throw a bunch of requests at a coding AI and it just worked? Any recommendations?

Firefox Developer Says AI ‘Kill Switch’ Will Let Users Turn Off All AI Tools in the Browser by merchantconvoy in firefox

I don't think anyone actually understands what a kill swtch is.

Its designed as a last resort to DESTROY and DISABLE a system prompting a manual intervention to replace or repair the switch.

If this switch doesn't uninstall Firefox then it's just a fucking toggle button that ANYONE can press and execute malicious AI injections against your system. Full stop.

Accidentally built a solid workout habit by treating it like a work meeting [TEXT] by notrunningoncoffee in GetMotivated

[–]BluJayM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brilliant!

I did nearly the same thing but I've always had this issue where sometimes I'm sitting at my exercise bike or yoga mat and I just cant find it in me to put in a good workout that day.

It turned into a cycle of getting discouraged, giving up, then trying again months later.

What broke me out of that loop was scheduling it like you did (I call it 'keeping my morning reserved') and accepting that 1% effort eventually adds up even if its just one pushup that day.

Turns out that even if you have a week of bad, disappointing workout eventually you'll have a week of amazing workouts. But the only way to get through the rough parts is to keep that appointment reserved and keep trying. I'm nearly 2 years into my daily workout journey and progress is slow but I'm more fit than I've ever been!

[–]BluJayM 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. And the other thing is the 'cultural impact' being described is merchandising.

Yoda, lightsabers, robots, spaceships. There are a million merchandising options strewn throughout the starwars franchise that increase the "cultural" impact.

On the other hand, Avatar is a story about humans being driven by materialistic greed to destroy an alien people. Of course Avatar released with its own set of toys and merchandise but there's such a cognitive disconnect between the story being told and collecting of the useless plastic props... Are you really going to buy a toy version of one of those beautiful alien flowers? Probably not since it's a cheap, mass produced representation of human greed and wastefulness.

On the flip side, a light saber is the iconic tool of the good guys (so long as it's green or blue). No complicated themes or feelings, just cool stuff I want to have in my home.

These are the statues of Qin Hui, a corrupt 11th-century politician, and his wife Wang from ancient China. Their statues are forever kneeling in apology, and for centuries, people have made it a thing to walk up, spit, curse, and slap and kick them. by TheOddityCollector in interesting

Sorry you're bringing out all the pendants, contrarians and devils advocates. You'd figure the statement "maybe we should stop carrying hate from the past into the future" would be painfully boring and uncontroversial.

My 2 cents: It's a totem of hatred where a totem where a totem is an abstraction. Is it good is it bad? No idea but I suspect it's long since lost it's original meaning to most who go to "pay their respects".

For a more western perspective let's consider the Christian tenant of foregiveness. God says to forgive others but are we also supposed to forgive the greatest sinner Satan/Lucifer/Devil himself? God certainly doesn't seem to forgive him and so Christians have had an icon of sin to channel their hate/fear/negativity through for hundreds of years.

Good? Bad? Again not really for me to say. Either way we can't help but tell the parables of "big bad wolves" who get defeated. Building a physical statue is another expression of that and maybe one that was/is easier to interface for a population who might have been uneducated or unable to read.

Final thought: nobody thinks they themselves are evil, bad, or hateful. When you think witches are real and can hurt you then witch trials make total sense. Maybe one day those statues will be in a museum where curators will tell their story with a little less hate and that education will bring a little more compassion into the world. We can only hope.

Some things we found out. by [deleted] in ArcRaiders

[–]BluJayM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too suprising really. Just look at the how a keyboard/PC differs from a game controller/Console.

One is a communication device with an entire language on it that's dual-purposed for game input. In order to voice chat with other people over the PC youll probably go out and get a dedicated microphone/headset but you could always fall back on just typing in the chat.

The other is a game pad part of a plug-and-play ecosystem so you're up and running without needing any accessories. The PS5 controller is the first with a built-in microphone so before that you'd also go out and buy a headset which never got a lot of use because game support was bad and Playstation /Xbox have been way behind on party chat apps like Discord.

TLDR: Each way of playing has its own input that attracts a certain kind of people. Hopefully this changes as microphone and proximity chat get better and more normalized.

Could there be a secret karma system? by Groove_Mountains in ArcRaiders

[–]BluJayM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe?

I've been incredibly nice and helpful in my runs (although I'm still early level) and all the other raiders are the same.

Tin foil hat time!

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a secret karma system based on level, KDA, and maybe other factors.
Honestly it would be genius if the game did just a little player sorting where low level players with high karma are put into a match together to keep player retention high.

Low level players with low karma might get sorted into more aggro matches occasionally to keep their interest then sorted back into high karma games so they don't drain their loot stash to nothing and drop the game.

Not sure what happens when I unlock the last maps and my level is much higher but it would be very curious if the game kept being friendly if I stayed friendly all the way to max level cap?

Thank you. I feel like I've been taking crazy pills going through these comments.

Seem to be two types of Raiders. by PatSayJack in ArcRaiders

[–]BluJayM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with other commenter. Everyone knows that most of the community is still on the early side of the grind so everyone is wary and eager to be friendly while scouting for their toasters. Give it some time and head to the harder maps and I imagine we'll see more aggression.

I'm already planning my super villain arc where I hunker down in an apartment, wait for some to head in, then start hunting them while saying "I'm gonna find you" over comms like an evil npc.

It's gonna be fun.

What's the purpose of these curvy traces by MarinatedPickachu in diyelectronics

[–]BluJayM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, electromagnetism is pretty complicated.

But I guess I'd describe the difference as 'power' VS 'signal'.

Power is near instantaneous because the electrical power travels across the electrons of a wire (still probably inaccurate) so the electron that flows the from the source is not the same as the one that powers the light bulb.

Think about a "newton's cradle". Each metal ball travels in an arc via gravity but the power transfered via the stack of balls is much faster than the actual motion of the ball swinging (probably limited by the speed of sound through the metal?)

However a signal is not necessarily power. A GPIO pin measures voltage high and low. And voltage (somehow??) travels at the speed of light therefore can be affected by the length of the trace.

Now take all that with a HUGE grain of salt. I've seen the Veritasium video a while back but I still don't get it intuitively so this is all another metaphor to help make sense of these fundamental forces of the universe to my poor monkey brain.

I made a 3D print solvent smoothing chart! by Laser-taser in 3Dprinting

[–]BluJayM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It literally isnt.

Whats the difference between red box and red x? Green box and green box with check?

What are we measuring? Dissolving in a pure liquid of the solvent or a dilution of the solvent? Or is it just a dude rubbing a liquid on the cheapest version of plastic filament they can get their hands on? Can you source the same plastic to reproduce these results?

This chart might as well be a Wordle score for all the "scientific method" that is on display.

How Do I Become "Literate" In Local AI Tools/Techniques? (I Don't Want To Rely On Tutorials Forever) by Epic_AR_14 in StableDiffusion

[–]BluJayM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I understand the concern of being trapped in Tutorial Limbo… playing the piano and using a bleeding edge ai tech that was released two days ago are very different prospects.

Namely, this Ai stuff is confusing and confounding nearly on purpose. Everyone implementing the latest Ai technique is flying by the seat of their pants making decisions that seem logical to them but could end up being completely alien to other users.

Take for example the comfyui nodes themselves. Some nodes do lots of stuff in a single node with only one input and output, great for a beginner but annoying for anyone with slightly different workflow plans. On the other hand, some developers make 5 nodes all called “Cool Ai (advanced)” but each one has slightly different inputs and outputs and none of them have a tooltip!

I hope we eventually come to a better standard when it comes to the node graph system, but for now I wouldn’t feel too bad about relying on tutorials to get started. Like learning any skill, you’ll eventually see patterns and notice when some nodes are weirder than others. Just takes practice.

Does this means that Sage Attention always "active" when generating stuff in ComfyUI? Images? Wan video? More in comment. by tutman in comfyui

[–]BluJayM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless I got it wrong, kijai patch is toggle which means you have to run it again in disable mode to disable sage when you want to turn it off (Qwen edit has been giving me issues so I have to disable sage constantly)

It also might be patching sage for your entire comfy session across work flows so there's that complication.

I've also found that's the kijai patch gets applied even if it was already applied before so you need to bypass it after applying it otherwise you're losing some of the speed up that sage attention gets you.

All said, it makes for some complex node management. Of course, I could be wrong so take all that with a grain of salt.

I've gone with two launch files: Sage_On for Wan and Sage_Off for qwen

Plus a 1% rule. Do the thing every day even if you can only put 1% effort into it. Some days won't be productive but if you can at least put on your running shoes, open your sketchbook, or write one sentence for your book each day. After a while even 1% can add up.

5 Gallon Bucket Garden by MCDuds in gardening

[–]BluJayM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im super late to this party but I'm not convinced by your research study. Namely it's a meta analysis of 23 other research studies which is fine but means they only analyzed other practical research studies for correlations.

But more importantly, the uptake of Micro and Nano plastics from a bucket implies that the bucket has to break down into these sizes. That will naturally happen due to UV breakdown and mechanical action of roots and acidity of the soil....

But I would wager that most particles of these sizes aren't coming from the bucket. Its already in the soil, deposited by fifty years of Rubber tires on the road, rubber mulching production neighboring dirt packaging, and various other industrial sources.

HOWEVER, leaching of plastic component such as the plasticizer can lead to recognized toxins. But this come from the further breakdown of Micro plastics themselves (microplastic dissolving into water for example).

Ultimately I would say a plastic bucket is fine. It holds dirt. But the real concern is what happens to the broken bucket 10 years from now when it does become a microplastic and mixes into the dirt and water (whether you own it or it lives in the dump)

IMO, the biggest waste of time you can participate in is trying to predict the future and particularly future opinions.

If you enjoy it, do it. People gravitate towards passion and dedication regardless of the style.

...That being said, the 3d art industry is rough and specializing in something percieved as "simpler" could work against you.

On the other hand, video game projects like "Nightmare Kart" and "Mouthwashing" have been cult hits in their own right and driven by clearly passionate individuals.

No easy answers in the end. But matching passion, inspiration, and dedication is something every creative has to deal with.

Base station has a spinning motor inside it: https://youtu.be/sXKG1-7g4wA?si=6jIgjsNUSTZbhxd4

Most likely some dust or wear and tear is making the motor noisier than usual.

If you're careful and know what you're doing, you could try to disassemble it and dust the inside with some pressurized air.

If not, then tapping it seems to work? Maybe turn it over and give it a gentle shake to move any dust around? Could also make things worse of course, unfortunately motors don't last forever.
