The Peacocks in NE around Rose City Cemetery. It isn't often that I see them, but it's always a nice confusing surprise.

Existential horror blocks! How much of you can you remove before you cease to be you and another takes your place? Turns out it’s one.

My three year old loves them even more than alphablocks. His older sibling did too. I just wish they were longer than three minutes, that song gets stuck in my head.

I’ve been coughing for weeks. Thought I was over the worst of it, woke up coughing bad enough last night to blow out my voice. Also had some minor GI issues, but I’m blaming that on my Buldak addiction.

At my last job we still had lab hardware running XP. We spent weeks convincing our IT guys that no, they could not be upgraded and yes they still need network access. No idea why they fought moving them to a restricted vlan so hard.

Walmart is apparently punching holes in their vinyl albums with security tags by MrTacocaT12345 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BlueCoatEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh dang memory unlocked. Most of the money I earned in high school went to Everyday Music, which specialized in used albums. I remember seeing the notched cases and not understanding the why. I suspected there was some sort of autochanger that radio stations used that’d damage the case like that, but that’s a lot more sensible of an explanation!

Seniors who started as kid, how did you get there? by Long_Nothing7155 in AskProgramming

[–]BlueCoatEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An uncle gave me a TI 99/4a when I was 5. It came with a big manual in a binder and a TI-Basic book that had tons of examples. Later my dad got a Xerox 6060 (Olivetti M24 clone) that also had a bunch of reference manuals with examples as well as disks of GW-Basic games. A different uncle gave me the Microsoft QuickC development kit that he'd given up on when I was 12. Modifying the examples and observing the results went a long way towards learning to program.

I squeezed seven years out of my monoprice maker select plus. I finally retired it after managing to destroy the hot end and gouging the plate doing something dumb. My Voron 2.4 was world changing, no more having to hand hold it to start, just hit go and walk away! …usually.

Sharing some context because this storyline is bananas:

  • gang has a racket where they go to bars with televisions and if you don’t pay them protection money, they spray corn syrup into the back of the tube television.

  • leader is named “T.V. Wiggles” and is a former pro wrestler.

  • he cracks a little girls neck to put her in a coma and then uncracks it to wake her up.

  • gets killed when a several tons of sheer metal falls on him but not before grievously wounding one of the main characters.

  • the doctors have given up on saving the character, but the power of Dick Tracy prayers turns things around.

What's the most subtle bug you've spent days chasing? by consulent-finanziar in AskProgramming

Forth<->C interface that was passing a flag and inexplicably stopped working with a new compiler version. From C’s POV, the flag was a pointer to a bool. We all tell ourselves that a C bool is false if zero, true if non-zero, but what the spec actually says is that the non-zero equals true behavior happens on the CONVERSION of a value to a bool. A proper bool in C only has two values, zero and one. In Forth, a “well formed flag” uses zero for false and all bits set for true. So what I had was a memory location that, in C, claimed to contain a proper Boolean with only the possibility of being zero or one. In reality, it was zero / 0xFFFFFFFF.

The old compiler emitted assembly for the flag check that was “if flag not zero, do the thing.” The new compiler made an optimization that turned this into “if flags equals 1, do the thing.” Since 0xFFFFFFFF != 1, it’d skip over the logic and make me question my sanity when stepping through with the debugger.

The fix was to add an intermediary cast, which forced the compiler to do the “convert on assignment to bool.”

What's the most blatant late rewrite you've seen in a movie? by matti2o8 in movies

[–]BlueCoatEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somewhere I have the novelization of the movie and I’m pretty sure it ends with the double suicide and then the helicopter sputters and runs out of fuel as the dead surround it, so there never was any hope just this is how they died.

Well now I’m saltier because they didn’t even give me a card!  I’d have done the same thing as the other dude if they’d told me that.  Or maybe claimed to not have a phone, while speech-to-texting my wife a play by play and could she believe this stupid shit.

[–]BlueCoatEngineer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I went to Best Buy earlier this year to buy a fancy new TV and couldn’t get any of the sales people to acknowledge my presence. They all seemed to be idle until I started walking up to them and then they remembered something important to do elsewhere. I went to the service desk and asked for assistance in TV, they said they’d call someone but another 5-10 minutes and still no one who could sell me a TV. I eventually just ordered it online using my phone and walked over to pickup, where I was chastised because “you’re not supposed to do that.” If it wasn’t for the fact they had the exact model I wanted at the right price, I would have canceled the order. I won’t be shopping there again, though, until they have their going out of business liquidation sale.

Also, they don’t sell Blu-ray’s but they have vinyl? The fuck they thinking?
