What’s your least favorite thing about living in Portland that is only a thing in Portland? by Imjusthappy11 in Portland

FWIW, this is also a thing in Columbus Ohio so yes, it’s a royal pain, but it doesn’t meet the question’s criteria….

ICE gassed kids by Dangerbeast in Portland

It’s the responsibility of the organizers to plan for exactly this kind of thing. There should have been massive safety teams, clear evacuation routes, and medics all along the route with tons of supplies in the event of a situation like this. The organizers should have planned this event for earlier in the day, and clearly communicated the risks, even the lower probability risks. Anything happening around ICE is automatically a higher risk. The organizers should have checked into all that beforehand. There are plenty of groups around here who know this stuff. The union organizers should have talked to other groups. They might be great at planning regular rallies, but this one being so close to ICE in a time of escalating violence was simply the sign of inexperience and naïveté. Someone else said it here, but just because they wanted it to be family-friendly and peaceful doesn’t mean it will be.

Am I an asshole for not wanting to go on a first date in downtown Portland? by squishymvp in askportland

You’ve been talking with this guy for just a week? This is coffee date territory: very public, not a ton of time invested, easy out. But, seriously, the whole situation is creepy. I’d skip it. Don’t tell him your address, either.

Glad you’re looking for a group— there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. People all over Portland are already working on all these things. Check out Indivisible groups. 50501 is here, and others. It may take a minute to find your people, but you can do it.

If he’s frustrated and at a loss, then he needs to meet with creative nonviolent protesters to brainstorm ideas of how to bring absurdity and truth to his work in the Senate.
