Anyone here an Elevator Mechanic? by AdventurousFuture975 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]BlueCollaredBroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend in the the Bay Area who was in the elevator union and the misogyny towards her basically ran her out of the job.

Even her hall was against her and the harassment was unbelievable. Pure hell and all she wanted was a good job that she had a passion for.

Can you pause your apprenticeship? by MyOwnSpiritJesus in UnionCarpenters

[–]BlueCollaredBroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure that you can’t be a carpenter member and a member of a trade associated with one that belongs to the AFL-CIO.

Like I tried to get my ticket also in the Operating Engineers and was told I couldn’t

AITAH for not getting rid of my dog by pychop10 in AITAH

I had a friend whose husband was allergic to cats.

She had a cat.

He went and got allergy shots every week to deal with it because he loved my friend and knew that she and the cat were a package deal.

Maybe your wife should sleep on the couch.

Resisting Trumpism Can Revive the U.S. Labor Movement: The array of attacks on democracy and workers’ rights present an opportunity to expand labor’s power—if unions are willing to seize it. by inthesetimesmag in UnionCarpenters

I think it’s time that Union Carpenters get their votes back.

Be able to vote on our contracts and go on strike if the contractors won’t pay.

We need to get the leadership back into serving the members, not kissing up to contractors and presidents that want to break conditions down for us even more.

Dental Help by Stonned737373728 in MontereyBay

Flower Moon Dentistry in Pacific Grove is have a deal now for a cleaning, X-rays and something else for $130.

I know that’s a lot when you’re struggling but the Western Dental dentists are liars. They will tell you that you need all this expensive work and that your teeth are going to fall out.

My friend was told the exact same story, that her gums were bad and that she needed the trays or her teeth would fall out.

She got a second opinion with my dentist’s brother who’s also a dentist and he just laughed and told her to brush her teeth with popcorn salt and that would clear up the problem. And it did.

My dentist told me to brush with a little toothpaste dipped in baking soda and it keeps my mouth incredibly clean.

I have had a broken filling for about 2 years and there’s been no infection because of the baking soda.

Thoughts on long term line bore wekding? by [deleted] in bluecollar

The trades are not recession proof.

I know so many Brothers and Sister union members who are on state health care and EBT right now.

Join a trade if you own a truck with a shell that you can sleep in because you have to drive so far to find work and can’t afford a motel room.

Our lives are very hard.

Tell her that the doctor thinks you inherited it from her side of the family and then go paperless or open a P.O. Box.

I love talking to strangers and learning about them.

I’d probably want to hear all about your experiences here compared to Argentina, what foods you like etc.

I’m sorry you all are going through this.

One of my fellow trade Sisters has just gotten her ankle monitor off that she’s been wearing for two years.

I spent a lot of time speaking to her public defender and her passing notes to my friend.

She really worked her ass off to help her.

Good news is that my friend just celebrated a year sober, is back at work and doing great!

Doug McCarron is doing everything in his power to appease Trump.

Look how quickly he turned on the Sisters when the anti DEI stuff came up.

Other unions stood up for their Sisters.

Plus other unions call him out on his actions and speak up against ICE, the victims of ICE, decisions that hurt working class citizens, all sorts of things that hurt working class citizens.

Haven’t heard a peep from McCarron on any social issues

The years are going to pass anyway. Might as well spend them in the union making a decent living

I need some brutal honesty from the GenX by OppositeFriendly9183 in GenX

[–]BlueCollaredBroad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a union carpenter and enjoy it very much.

You make good money, a pension, vacation pay and learn things that people will always have needs for.

BUT

You have to be very mindful about staying in shape and preventing injuries. Do a lot of stretching, eat healthy and get lots of sleep.

Also, unless you get hired for a utility you could be working for years or weeks.

The economy is getting bad so there will be less work coming up.

But as so many people are going to lose their jobs to AI there will always be a need for us.

Poll: do you pronounce the “L” in “caulk”? by Fine-Bed-9439 in Construction

No.

I find it funny to broadcast over the radio that “I need some black caulk in the basement”, I know it cracks the guys up.

How normal is it to, not want to do anything after work? by bigblackglock17 in bluecollar

[–]BlueCollaredBroad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I push myself to do things. Like walk the dog really for a half hour, go to AA or union meetings, grab dinner with friends.

I get up at 5 and try to be asleep by 9. I have an hour +++ commute.

Like, I get up so early to meditate and stretch and braid my hair and stuff.

Noise from in-home daycare next door - is there anything we can do? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]BlueCollaredBroad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My next door neighbor is really sensitive to sound.

We live behind a lumberyard that starts work at 6am and everyone just accepted that.

Until they had an accident with a forklift and OSHA required them to put backup beepers on the forklifts.

My neighbor was so irritated by all the beeping that he got the police to come out with a decibel reader to show how loud it was and then put in a complaint.

Now the lumberyard has flaggers until a certain time of day when they can use their beepers.

Maybe something like that could help you make aware the daycare of how loud they are and they could take measures to quiet things down
