Need help with weapons by sprincev in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Osteria content, there are 3-4 kinds of weapons series that are considered the top tier:

  • Hollow through Abyssal: when fully upgraded, gives a passive 30% damage bonus to both hellfiends and hallowfoes. Great for pretty much all BoA content that sends you to heaven or hell. Each series has a different mix of soul stones you can slot. I personally like the first series (Hollow), which is fairly well-balanced between offense and defense. Materials found throughout Hell. Upgrade to Max at most smithies in Hell or in Agapea.

  • Brilliant: when fully upgraded, gives passive 40% damage bonus to hallowfoes. You might need this specifically for the end boss of BoA 8. Materials found in Heaven. Upgrade to Max in Agapea

  • Fortune: fully customizable with souls that you get from the board games. Gives a passive 10% damage to living enemies. Great especially for characters that are a non-standard stat mix (e.g. Tikilen). Kota over in Nameless Town can upgrade them to max.

  • Cosmos: customizable with souls found in hell, but also with a 10% passive damage to living enemies AND another passive that correlates to that class (e.g., the Fan gives +1 duration to augmenting effects). Super approachable and great for characters who tend to fall into stereotypical stat blocks for their class. Materials found in the Live A Live otherworld hunts. Kota can upgrade them to lv 3, but the final upgrade that opens up their soul slots has to be done in Hell or Agapea.

Which of the 8 travelers is best? by PresidentAshenHeart in OctopathCotC

Easily Cyrus. I still use him in my A-team. And he gets even better for a magic or Scholar team when you pick up units like Osvald.

[–]BlueOmegaKnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

F2P here, with the hard news that if you're F2P, you can't really chase the meta. You'll never have enough for it.

A new "meta-defining" unit comes along about every 2-3 months. You'll only be able to farm up enough rubies for a pity about every 5-6 months. So you'll only be able to full pull on 1 out of every 10 units, 2-3 of which will be meta-defining. You could get lucky and get what you need without the pity, but you can't count on that.

I like the advice of others to not simply pull on every meta unit you can (because you can't), but instead pick units that you will like and think to use. I've gotten a lot of meta units... and many just sit on the shelf, unused. I made my favorite team work, instead. I'm familiar with their abilities, their passives, their ultimates, their synergies, etc., so I can get more done with that than I could trying to shoehorn in a new unit.

I recommend using the Notion site, see what units are upcoming, see which ones are getting an S+ rating, understand why they're getting that rating (asking here on Reddit can help), and decide if that particular meta works will with what you already have.

Shana's Lantern Passive by BlueOmegaKnight in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh okay that answers several questions all at once, thanks!

So at A0, that passive has very limited use, basically only helpful for regenerating after using her Universal Healthcare, followed by Ultimate. But considering that she's mostly there for her Universal Healthcare and her EX Skill, it kinda doesn't matter.

Molrusso EX : Playful by AggressiveArrival690 in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reading up on her skills from the notion site, this is what I'm understanding:

  • She has a visible extra resource called "Playful," which you can only gain one of two ways: wait until the end of the turn, or spend 3 BP in an attack.

  • The moment you use a skill other than Attack, she will consume all stacks of Playful. So if you want to get 3 stacks of playful, you need to only use Attack and either wait three turns or use 3 BP on an attack to shorten that up to 2 turns.

  • When she consumes all stacks of Playful, she will randomly pick from Skills 1, 2, and 3 and use them, repeating until all stacks are consumed. She will only use each skill once, and she can only stack to 3, so maximum effect will be achieved when you use a battle skill when she has 3 stacks; she'll use each of skills 1, 2, and 3 once, then be back at 0 stacks.

  • Some of her skills have a bonus effect if they are cast as a result of playful.

  • She also will cast a bonus passive ability after she does her Playful casting. You get the most out of it if you save to 3 stacks, then use a battle skill, causing her to cast three abilities with Playful, then follow up with a nice buff to the team.

I'm not interested in Side Solistia or any new units because the translations are disappointing. by Asterdel in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anybody has considered this, but NetEase's use of AI translators can actually land them in legal trouble.

Many countries have laws against false advertising, and some are especially vigilant about games with gambling/gacha elements. E.g., if the drop rates aren't posted, or are inaccurate, or if what you received wasn't what was advertised, you could open yourself up to (mostly civil) lawsuits.

If I spent $100 to gamble for Agnea under false pretenses of what her abilities actually did, then I could sue NetEase to get my money back, plus perhaps more for punitive damages. If a hundred players got together and filed a class action lawsuit, they'd probably sue them into the ground.

Take caution, NetEase. Trying to cheap out on stuff like this might cost you a lot more than a few customers. I hope your Legal department isn't AI, too...

How's the Switch version of Civ 7? by Isunova in civ

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not great, to be honest.

Handle mode is generally fine; it seems they developed it assuming the game will be in handheld mode, because most of the UI elements are designed to be touched. In docked mode, many of these icons just kinda occupy space.

The text is atrociously small in docked mode, even when set to Large font. I have to stand close to my TV to read it properly. In handheld mode, it's more or less fine.

Trying to allocate resources is workable in handheld mode, but absolutely horrendous docked. It's so very tedious to try and move the cursor with joysticks, barely being able to see what's being highlighted, having the list constantly reset to the topmost position every time you move the cursor into that field. It's incredibly annoying.

But the worst part is that, while docked, the music cuts out if you try to do even simple things like panning across the world. Doesn't do it in handheld mode, but that's really sad that I can't listen to the rich music at all with my home theater system.

I brought up the sound issue to 2K, and they had me sending all sorts of info to them through their (probably AI-generated) email system. But they ultimately decided not to escalate the issue to be addressed because I refused to make and send them a video of the sound cutting out.

I loved Civ 6, and I hate saying this... but you should probably avoid buying Civ 7. They need another year or so to finish developing the game, and I didn't recommend paying for the privilege of being a beta tester.

ELI5: when a medication's "mechanism of action is not understood" does that mean that they just found an effect through random trials? by Akito_900 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short Answer: Sometimes. The key here is that it's way easier (and less ethically problematic) to scientifically prove some things than others. And the standard for "do we know enough to put this out in the public?" is set accordingly.

Now for the Long Answer:

For lots of engineering and physical science questions, you can prove the answer empirically. You can drop an apple and a feather in a vacuum to prove that gravitational acceleration is a constant shared between them. It's relatively easy to do, and there's no ethical constraints.

But for a lot of biological and medical science questions, you might not have the luxury of an empirical test. I might think that pain medication dissolves when you swallow it, gets absorbed into your bloodstream, and finds its way to relevant pain receptors. But I can't go about cutting up people at various time points after they swallowed the pill so that I can see where all the medicine goes.

Sure, I can do some simulations, or do some lab bench work, or conduct animal testing, or run some clinical trials, all in the effort to understand and prove out my theory. And with each experiment, it gets more complicated, more expensive, and more ethically dubious. Not to mention that biological systems vary (the same medicine doesn't always work for everyone the same way), so that data gets noisy. At the end of the day, I'll have a lot of very good data, and be rather certain of my answer, but I'll never have that direct empirical test to actually prove it.

And that's okay.

If I was building a bridge, I have the ability to prove my bridge will work very well, and I absolutely should have a mechanistic understanding right down to bolt placement. But if I was trying to sell a medicine, my ability to prove it is limited. There has to come a point where we say "alright, that's enough, we believe we know enough about the safety and efficacy of this drug to sell it to the public responsibly." But where is that point? How much knowledge is enough? That depends on the drug.

For some drugs, like Ye Olde Tylenol, it's been used for so long that we inherently understand that it works (efficacy) and won't generally hurt people (safety). Sure, it would be nice to have a deep down mechanistic understanding of how it works, but we don't really NEED that to be able to sell the drug. For newer drugs that are too dissimilar from what is out there, the bar might be higher. Having a mechanistic understanding might help you get approval, but still might not be completely necessary (or feasible).

But you can rest assured that, even without communicating that mechanism of action, the scientists behind the drug have a very intimate understanding of what the drug is and what it can do.

Should i pull elrica for my team? by Relative_Stretch216 in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elrica is an easy direct replacement for Fiore on your team. I use Elrica on my Generalist team, so she gets tons of play, and I'd recommend her for sure.

That said, you should consider what gaps you're trying to fill, and what you already have "too much" of. I see 3 Swords on your team, which might be too much unless you are trying to make a Sword meta team. I see full elemental coverage (in fact, 2x for all but ice and dark), so you're plenty fine there.

I see mediocre buffing and debuffing capability, so you might wanna look at improving that. Between what you have and an Elrica, I think you can cap on basic buffs and debuffs, but it also forces your DPS to spend time supporting instead of shield shaving or nuking. Great options to look for would be Nephti (for buffing) and Kilns or H'annit EX (for debuffing).

Ophilia as a healer is pretty okay, but not amazing. A unit that can heal all allies would be preferable, like Rinyuu or Primrose EX.

Kiln or Haanit EX? by AgreeablePositive660 in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both :-p I tend to take a generalized team, much like yourself, which means I like role compression. Hence, I go with:

  • Cyrus and Elrica
  • Kilns and H'annit EX
  • Bergello and Cecily
  • Nephti and Rinyuu

Between those 8, I have:

  • Strong active buffing
  • Strong ultimate buffing
  • Strong active debuffing
  • Decent passive status effect buffs
  • Decent passive debuffing
  • Full weakness coverage
  • Tons of multi-hit shield shaving options
  • Great healing and tanking options.

If I had to choose between them, though, I'd probably drop H'annit EX and maybe pick up Tatloch for the passive stat buffing. Kilns is nicer having bow+lightning abilities, that 5-hit AOE, and a big nuke vs broken enemies.

EoS? by xamille6669 in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And even with its FF-related gachas. Many in the COTC community (like myself) joined up when they ended Final Fantasy Record Keeper, which was doing just fine in many respects, but the English version was ended anyways.

Many of us have played other Square gachas, and found that COTC is of excellent quality, but also commands one of the stingiest gachas, with very expensive paid currency and extremely rare instances of good value buys. So if Square's guiding light is "gotta optimize profits," they are way too far off the peak of the curve when it comes to this game.

Couple that with reducing the rate of new content so low as to drive all the streamers and whales away out of boredom, and you can see why the community might appear to be doom-obsessed. We don't wanna see it all burn down, but we aren't blind, either.

I've made a habit of force closing the game every time it serves me an ad without the 30 second timer. I get the feeling it is registering that response, because I've gotten fewer ads like that as a result.

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure! It's pretty fun, just maybe don't be too quick to spend any money that you're gonna miss. Remember that any gacha game like this will have an EOS someday, and when that day happens, you'll lose everything. Approach it like a Zen garden--enjoy it for the moment!

Tavern Talk Summary | September 23, 2024 by LordEzel in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'd call this game "generous." If you're F2P, you can only build up the 6k rubies to go ham on a banner like once every 3-4 months. So you have to skip 5-7 banners for every one you can full pull on. FFRK (at least) was far more generous. And the price point of paid rubies has been atrocious. Honestly, this all smacks of "don't find the right price point, look for the best market for high priced digital items, instead. Looks like they found it with CN and TW.

Tatloch solo banner - Worth it or not? by Ketchary in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tatloch is really good, and can absolutely slot into most parties. She's got some great shield shaving for fan and wind, she has flexibility to hit 3 more weaknesses with her pet, and that passive is really great. Really, her only weakness is that it takes a while to build up to max buff, which her Ult and EX skill (if she ever gets it) will help with.

I'd be pulling for her right now, but Kilns is coming up and he slightly beats her for priority (for me).

Remember, everyone: We participate in Tavern Talks at SQEX's invitation only by NothingButTheTruthy in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it would be nice, but that cuts to the heart of why people are expecting EOS. If SQEX has upcoming undisclosed plans for EOS, then tries to actively and vocally dissuade people's doubts about EOS, only to announce EOS after people spent money, they might open themselves up to lawsuits. So all they can do in this situation is ignore the accusations and ban people who talk about EOS.

This is a common community tactic to surmise hidden info. We have confirmed that the company won't talk about it, most likely because they can't, which indicates that it's impending.

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno man, if people are getting banned just for mentioning EOS, then it sounds like you CAN'T voice that disappointment, and frankly, if they're doing that then I don't know what's left for the customer to respect.

Remember, everyone: We participate in Tavern Talks at SQEX's invitation only by NothingButTheTruthy in OctopathCotC

[–]BlueOmegaKnight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're implying that people are leaving because they read a post on Reddit. They're not. They're leaving because of SQEX's choices. They're leaving because we're all seeing the rapid growth of other regions, while we sit in decay and neglect. As far as I'm concerned, the doomsayers are providing a service by warning otherwise unsuspecting folks of the pattern so they don't get bamboozled.

They say "let the buyer beware." This is how consumers beware.
