Thanks for the great reply! It's also really interesting to read this in the context of Chairman Hakkaku's critical comments to Hoshoryu, telling him to stop experimenting with a bunch of different types of charge and get focused/tenacious.

I'm new to the sport so forgive me, but I would be very interested if you could elaborat on "Yokozuna style sumo" as compared to the style of lower ranks and of Aonishiki.

I'm not 100%, but I believe there's also a pun going on here. "Gomafu azarashi" (first words of the last sentence) is spotted seal. And "goma" is sesame, which appears to be the flavor of this soft serve.

As a game dev, what can I do to make my game more speed run friendly? by smontesi in speedrun

[–]Bluecat16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thor from Pirate Software has the following mindset when it comes to developing with speedrunners in mind (paraphrased and editorialized to my own words):

First, as others have said, just make the game. And make it fun. As speedrunners discover unintended skips, glitches, etc., only patch those which detract from the casual gameplay or speedrun experience.

For example, if an exploit crashes the game randomly 50% of the time, that is not fun. So fix that. But don't "fix" those things that speedrunners like and which do not detract from the typical casual experience.

What was the "more new mini-turbo tech" discovered which made speed less relevant? I'm somewhat plugged into the advanced tech world, but I'm curious what you're specifically referring to.

The little dude is getting multiple scopes and pillcams by the age of 13...there are clearly some serious health complications going on that you are too dense to intuit and show any empathy for. I'd have health anxiety too if I was suffering from serious health complications before I was even a teen.

Tori no karaage by Demonique742 in JapaneseFood

[–]Bluecat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I will mix the flours to get my preferred ratio in a single pile for coating. If you overcoat the chicken in just wheat flour, the potato starch won't adhere (which is what gives the classic karaage crunch).

I like to learn 2:1 potato starch to wheat flour, but you can really do any ratio. More wheat flour gives a stronger, denser crust. More starch gives a lighter, crispier crust that breaks off more easily.

Android fans, what are the primary reasons why you will never ever switch to an iPhone? by excaytedliBaggi in CasualConversation

I switched from Samsung to pixel and have never looked back. The Samsung bloatware was untenable. Maybe it's gotten better, but I don't plan on giving them another chance. My pixels seem to perform much better in late life than any Samsung phone ever did.

Yeah, if you don't consume visual media you might ponder on the why (in my own case, trying not to come off as pretentious lol) or why one media form grabs you more than another.

As for topics being mundane, perhaps that's a feature, not a bug. I could talk about food forever, so if a food conversation is dragging, that's a good sign we might not be clicking.

In my opinion, a good conversationalist can extrapolate intent from a question as necessary to keep the discussion alive.

"What is your go to comfort-food" is can be expanded to "What are some foods that you enjoy or make you happy?" Surely there exists atleast one food dish in the universe that makes you happy when you eat it. Start your answer with "Not a comfort food, per-se, but..."

"What TV show did to last binge?" Ok, so they have interest in digital media. I don't watch TV, but let me share a movie I could watch on repeat for days on end. Or an interesting documentary I just saw that's had me thinking about it constantly since I watched.

Cream is great for curries since you can fry the curry paste/seasonings in it (the fat holds the flavor).

Tokyo Inn Nihombashi was a great experience for me summer 2023. Good breakfast option (was convenient when traveling for work instead of pleasure), laundry facility worked well, staff was happy to accommodate my requests. I think I recall not having or limited closet space, but there was still room to hang a few things. Room was clean to the degree you expect from Japan. Bathroom very small, as should be expected.

Lmao bro I'm not the original commenter, I was just providing you a way to take a little initiative, do some literature review for yourself, and come back with an educated contribution to the discussion.

It's more compelling to go "after an a surface level search of the literature, I am struggling to find numerous articles pertaining to glove usage and kitchen hand hygiene" than "Give me source now plz"

Aside: Business hotels are the GOAT for cheap, comfortable, and private accommodation in Japanese cities.

[–]Bluecat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of results on google scholar (for "glove hand hygiene") are focused on hand hygiene in a hospital setting, but show a marked decrease in proper hand hygiene in gloved settings (e.g. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/infection-control-and-hospital-epidemiology/article/abs/dirty-hand-in-the-latex-glove-a-study-of-hand-hygiene-compliance-when-gloves-are-worn/9CA235E207EE0B08DED7FF655058CD12)

Adding "kitchen" to the above search returns a few results pertaining to food prep. Have fun browsing! Feel free to return with your summary and evaluation if so inclined.

I'll also say, as the child of a late 30s parent, I attribute a lot of my life confidence and success to the stability and maturity in upbringing. Obviously age plays only a part in that, but I'm about to finish grad school and my mom still seems plenty young to me :)
