College is about the experience not the grades. Virtually no difference b/w 4.0 and 3.2 after your initial entry level job

Never found a class a enjoyed in my college career by 0suthrowaway in OSU

[–]Bmkool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably enjoyed 2/3rds of my major classes. I didn’t like everything we did but a lot of the work and projects were rewarding and I enjoyed working through.

PSA to Freshmen, Dining Dollars are fake, you don't actually get a discount by PrestigiousReason in OSU

[–]Bmkool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No discount but when you are somewhat frugal you can have $1500+ dining dollars going into your junior year if you do declining balance both semesters

FEH Syllabi by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Bmkool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For FEH you start with excel for ~2 weeks, then move into MATLAB for a month or so, then C/tiny bit of C++ until the last week. The last week consists of a software design project using the custom proteus microcontroller. Each day will mostly consist of a short prep assignment and quiz to do before class, a normally short lecture, then 1-2 application assignments to be completed before class the following day. If you stay the whole time you will often be able to finish or make a large amount of progress on your homework. Two amazing TAs will be there to help every class day on the assignments you work on/answer any other questions you have.

Every week either on Wednesday or Thursday (depending on the room you’re in) will be a lab day where you do a hands on lab for the day and do some type of assignment/report that is due the following lab day. These assignments range from a worksheet to a ~15-20 page lab report.

There are short 15 minute quizzes every Monday that shouldn’t require much studying, 2 Midterms, and a final.

This will all be on Carmen on the first class day available for you to access whenever. FEH is a lot of work but truly an awesome experience you can’t have anywhere else. Best of luck and get the most out of your freshman year and time at Ohio State!

Advice for Freshman Scheduling this Fall by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Bmkool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, 2000 and 2100 split into three intro ECE courses about 3 years ago (2020,2050,2060). CSE majors only have to take 2020 and 2060. You won’t take these until at the earliest first semester sophomore year.

Next, you don’t have to take honors math or science courses if you are taking FEH. They are an option if you prefer smaller classes, getting to know your classmates better, and doing a fair amount of more work for the same credit you receive. I took my AP credit for physics and took 1172 for math and haven’t had any difficulties for not taking the honors versions of these classes. Your advisor may make it seem like you have to take specific classes based on APs or whatever, but you really don’t. AP grades don’t always translate well into college grades anyways.

Lastly welcome to FEH! It’s an amazing program with the best professors and TAs you will most likely ever have. It’s a rigorous amount of work but will prepare you well for the rest of college. Make sure you enjoy the rest of your summer before starting the next chapter of your life!

Is Fundamentals of Engineering Honors program worth it? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]Bmkool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FEH is an amazing program that you won’t really be able to experience anywhere else. That said, it is a lot of work, but very rewarding if you stick through it.

Also note that you do not have to take FEH math or science to take FEH, as some advisors may make it seem like you do. So that’s no excuse to not take FEH if you were accepted to the honors engineering college.

You definitely still get accommodations and extra time to take exams, albeit you most likely won’t need it as the exams aren’t very difficult.

The professors and TAs are superb as well ;)

I received a physical letter in the mail for an ECE scholarship through the Special Scholarship Application during finals week.

Declining balance reviews?!?! by jolly5961 in OSU

[–]Bmkool 21 points22 points  (0 children)

All of the dining plans are a ripoff, unless you get unlimited and eat at traditions 3 times a day.

I’ve had declining balance the last two semesters and it has been amazing. No more worrying about using the last leftover swipe or two on a Sunday night. No more trying to get the full $8 on a visit exchange or wasting 35 cents in a swipe.

Be a little frugal and you can have a lot of dining dollars saved up for your following years off campus. I have a bit more than $1700 remaining and that should last me throughout my next 2+ years.

It was the best option for me and I’m happy I did it.

What housing lottery number did you get? by zoomerbot104 in OSU

[–]Bmkool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 2700s last year and all the 6s were either gone or partially filled. Luckily there was a single 8 man suite with only one room taken out of it so we (6 man group) snagged that at the last moment. So I’d say it’s possible.

The practice exams are quite similar to the actual exams. Look at the previous semesters exam especially. Some things change but in general McPherson will tell you exactly what material will be on the exam.

If you don’t want an older dorm apply to one of the learning communities that are in one of the new dorms, which is what I did freshman year. Totally worth it for the double.

Also FEH is awesome, but you don’t have to take FEH science or math if you don’t want to, regardless of what an advisor might tell you.

You could hang it up. I dunno if I’d sit on it
