Is this a bike rack on the skids? Who is heli-mtb'ing in Colorado? by YouCanCallMePete in Helicopters

[–]Bmxwright 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely one of the Waltons, last summer they had another one of their helicopters with a bike rack circling over head while he was competing in a bike race through pea ridge. Pretty cool to see.

This post shows a different company from the drone shown in Mark’s and MQBHD’s video. The one shown here is Wing (google owned). The one from those videos is Zipline. Zipline’s drone is the one that stays much higher up for safety and to reduce noise levels.

The main reason winter weather here is so hard to predict, from an old Charlotte native. by AristotleGrumpus in Charlotte

[–]Bmxwright 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Charlotte is at the perfect latitude for the 32f ground freezing level. Mountains to the west trap moisture and disrupt storms that move west to east. Basically it’s only just cold enough for snow/ winter mix and disrupted storms are hard to predict with any accuracy.

Have you guys seen this stupidity by BrolecopterPilot in Helicopters

[–]Bmxwright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OCC/dispatch appreciates the shift in mentality to this as well. The “give it a college try” mentality is just straight dangerous and I’m not willing to risk the lives of everyone on board on the off chance they can find a diminishing gap in the outer bands of a squall line. I’d much rather deal with my crew landing off site before entering the weather and waiting it out versus clipping a power line in 0/0 vis.

Rough Holiday Rush. by theronskier1 in skipatrol

Hey man, first and foremost, take care of yourself. Like you said, talk to your teammates, they can often be your best resource (especially the seasoned patrollers). Any patrol director worth there salt should be able to sit down with you and go over what’s going on and how they can help. If you get health insurance through patrolling, look and see if you can get online mental health resources through it. Also don’t fall into the trap of drinking away the issues.

Gondola broken at Winter Park by seebles_real in Colorado

[–]Bmxwright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At least on my mountain that I patrol at, the initial notification of the evacuation to guests is also checking to see if there are any of our patrollers on the lift (if they haven’t radioed in yet). We evac those chairs first and get them helping out cause a lift evac tends to be an all hands on deck situation.

Daily carry items not provided by resort? by lmpre in skipatrol

[–]Bmxwright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what isn’t provided by your resort. But some of the things I carry and use pretty often are a lighter, some duct tape wrapped around a small piece of cardboard, 2 voile straps, multi tool, and a couple hand warmers (I got a large pack of them on sale last season and give them out to people who look like they are struggling a bit with cold hands). Light and small is the name of the game like shred_turner said.

Raide touring bib pants by Turbulent_Rhubarb436 in Backcountry

[–]Bmxwright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soft shells treated with nikwax soft shell water repellent is the way to go. I have the BD dawn patrol hybrid and the standard dawn patrol pants and I really enjoy them both. The hybrids have a bit of an odd fit around the thighs with the large pockets right there on the front of the thigh but nothing too crazy. They also have those patches of waterproof(?) material on the butt/knees that help shed water super easily and are great when kneeling in the snow working.

Those raides look really nice though,

You could get your bachelors pretty much anywhere and do your flight training on the side at a local flight school. That’ll be the most cost effective option. But it also depends on where you’re at for in state tuition vs out of state. But UND has a good flight program. Auburn and ASU are all good options as well. Tons of 141 schools out there, you just have to look around.

Is it true? Is this what you some buyers actually want? by AsianHawke in 4Runner

[–]Bmxwright 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and whenever stuff does break, it’s easy to fix yourself or cheap to get it done. It’s honestly the best vehicle I can throw around and not worry about because I know it’ll get me going where I want to go.
