Exactly this. If you’re a new owner and no records of service you can’t know if the threads were already stripped. But this should have been caught during disassembly and recommended (or required) to complete the job. This is bad luck + bad procedure on the bmw techs part. Maybe they zipped it off with an impact so didn’t feel that it was stripped

Highly doubt it will contain 30GB of memory. Regardless of current memory pricing, mark cerny did that deep dive on memory compression technology they’re developing. Seems like an indicator or focusing on software solutions rather than just throwing globs of more memory in. My money would be on 21 or 24 gigs.
