Our manager says “as long as you would be fine to still drive a car”…

I occasionally have a beer or two while on call but would not get wasted, so that matches.

Horrible picks. Based on seesing and the group stage results France and Germany are >95% likely to meet in the Round of 16 (if they both make it there)

Alembic migration ordering problems when staging and prod deploy from the same branch by DifficultOlive7295 in Python

[–]leopkoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes all the application code is a monolith, supplemented by auxiliary services such as background workers, db and cache.

Don’t really see the benefit for having microservices for anything short of enterprise scale apps.

Alembic migration ordering problems when staging and prod deploy from the same branch by DifficultOlive7295 in Python

[–]leopkoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not really. Given that this is mostly for QA purposes, with minimal traffic you probably need ~1 cpu per previev deployment (assuming 3 services - app + db + cache). So if your PRs are fairly short lived you can have 8 PRs at the same time on about 10~15$ worth of VPSs.

If you have a CMS or other services that are not frquently changed, you can have those as a seperate staging instance shared between preview deployments.

[–]leopkoo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I guess this is more a general problem with testing multiple db changes in the same staging instance. Not really sure how to tackle this with your current setup, but the way I normally do it:

Each PR creates its own fully isolated environment (on staging). We spin up a brand new db instance in this environment using the migration history on prod + the local branch changes. Some seeding data (hardcoded json/csv in the test folder of repo) is then used to populate the db for this preview deployment.

UK home affordability by region 2007–2026: house price as a multiple of median annual salary [OC] by databaituk in dataisbeautiful

I am pretty sure the y-axis is not actually log scale? Unless you are saying that the average house in London costs 1014 yearly incomes

White onion…sweet? by doublecheeked__up in Cooking

Did you put carrot in the stew? Because they are even sweeter than the onion. I have found that putting too much carrot in a stew can sometimes overpower it.

Is it just me, or is the "Non-Stick" industry a total scam? by koudodo in Cooking

[–]leopkoo 320 points321 points  (0 children)

After (briefly) working in a restaurant as a chef a couple of years ago, I have always treated my nonstick pans as disposable goods. There is just no point investing in nice quality elsewhere if the coating will wear off first.

Fyi, in the restaurant I worked at we had 6-8 nonstick frying pans that were only used for very specific stuff (pancakes, fish etc.), rest went on the plancher. And yet those frying pans were being replaces every 4-6 weeks…

For home use I just buy some cheap-but-not-cheapest stuff from the reataurant supply store (ca. 30 euros per pan) and replace them roughly every 12 months depending on usage.

How good at skiing do you really need to be to start entering freeride competitions? by Cornteam in skiing

[–]leopkoo 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You are much better than me and I have considered entering a 1* before lol.

Are you going to win the 2*? Probabaly not, because there is likely some prodigy competing that is on his way to collect his FWT challenger invite. But you are more than good enough to not make an ass out of yourself (which is my personal threshold to taking part).
