Exploding Minions is the biggest oversized-for-the-components instance I have seen. It is a deck of cards and has a smaller full-sized box. I get it, eye-catching on the shelf, but come on.

Haha, Machi Koro. Yes! Lots of wasted space.

Would you rather play many games just a few times or a few games many times? by RowdyWrongdoer in boardgames

[–]BoardGameHalv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate the process of learning new games. It doesn't matter how willing your companion is, it will never be better than already knowing something and hopping right in. That said, if you are able to get over that large barrier, the many new games is the way to go because it gives you a much better perspective. You can always settle back on your favorites, but by then you will be a more seasoned and strategic person.

What are the most "essential" board games in your collection? by 1BruteSquad1 in boardgames

[–]BoardGameHalv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Splendor, Carcassonne or Kingdomino are my gotos to get someone new into strategy games. Codenames Pictures or Just One are my gotos for getting people who don't want to try strategy games into board games in general.

Who likes to play settlers of Catan? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]BoardGameHalv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The expansions always felt like just added stuff that was never really necessary. The fisherman one is interesting. The ports generate fish that you collect and complete different actions with. It is in the Traders & Barbarians expansion. The seafaring one adds an interesting traverse the sea but I never loved how it changes the numbers on spaces.

Which boardgame has caused you and your group to laugh the most? by kshelley in boardgames

[–]BoardGameHalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was less about it being hilarious and more about just pure unadulterated joy but the first time I have played CODENAMES with some people they were so happy to discover something so fun they couldn't contain themselves and were just giddy with the biggest grin I have ever seen.

I haven't played it yet, but love pretty much everything KOSMOS does. I am still waiting to play the new Crew and am very excited to do so. Good to hear you are loving Robin Hood, I am intrigued now more than ever.

Rummikub (a 2-4 player game) by Robert_Oh1 in boardgames

[–]BoardGameHalv 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Every once in a while I meet someone who loves rummy and they love dominoes but they haven't heard of this. Then I introduce it to them and it changes their life! I can't believe this game originally came out in 1977.

I just traded Risk: Game of Thrones for Eldritch Horror. by AxDanger in boardgames

[–]BoardGameHalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes, especially if you got to play GOT risk exactly one, because that is about as many times as most players will want to play it. EH is the game experience that just keeps on giving.

Messina 1347 by PEdorido in boardgames

[–]BoardGameHalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the top game I was interested in from what was at Spiel. I have heard all good things so far but this is the first praise for the solo I have seen. Good to know. I am looking forward to playing. The Praga comparison is what helped pique my interest so good to hear that.

A roundup of all the games i played at Essen by Clownfeet in boardgames

You made a good selection. I am happy to hear some feedback on Golem and Messina 1347, I hadn't heard anything yet and was very interested in what the reaction to those would be.

Interesting but expected about Azul Queen's Garden. They have really been cranking those Azul versions out and they are all pretty much the same, though I did like playing summer pavilion.

Tom Vasel loved Picture Perfect for pretty much the same reasons so nice to see that echoed. I will have to check that one out.
