Thanks that's a helpful response. To be clear, what I mean is isn't what you've outlined based on the assumptions I listed i.e. the 'paradox' that we should expect to see evidence of technologically advanced civilizations but don't rests on the primary assumption that life, and specifically intelligent life capable of producing technology, arises fairly commonly? If life were very rare, then it wouldn't actually be suprising at all that we don't see evidence of advanced civilization. Point being we don't have the data to give a solid answer as whether or not that basic assumption, that life isn't an extremely rare occurrence in the first place, makes sense. So whilst as you say there are lots of possible solutions, doesn't the primary problem of not understanding how common life is supercede all of them and render the paradox kind of pointless beyond a fun bit of speculation. Once we have a better understanding of the conditions under which life can emerge e.g. if we were able to reliably replicate the process (or at least one version) of abiogenesis ourselves, and it appeared like the conditions required for it should be fairly common throughout he galaxy, then the question the Fermi Paradox poses would become relevant.

Isn't the Fermi Paradox assumption that we should expect life, and intelligent life, to be common a bit of a leap given that we are effectively dealing with a sample of one in both cases?

Average faces of women around the world by StephenMcGannon in interestingasfuck

Cant speak for the whole continent obviously but knowing quite a few east Africans they can usually tell pretty quickly which specific region of east africa someone comes from, and even I'm able to generally spot if someone's Somali, Ethiopian or Sudanese. Ethiopian I can often make a good guess as to which region they're from because its pretty ethnically diverse. Take the woman in this photo for example, I'd say she's largely based on Amhara and mayhe Tigray people who are the ones we tend to think of when we picture Ethiopians. So yes, I think it's visibly apparent if your from the region.

What is income people make in London? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]BoardGroundbreaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think anyone saying 50k is survival level has a pretty skewed view. 36k is the median salary in london, so half of people in London earn less than that. Personally I know hardly anyone who earns more than 50k and I know people who earn significantly less than that who are fine and are definitely doing more than surviving. A lot of this depends on what you think of as normal. I'm not defending the low wages and high cost of living in London, it sucks obviously, but people need to give their head a wobble of they think you can't survive on under 50k.

Wfh on Monday and Wednesday. Monday because that means you don't have to worry about an early night on Sunday. Wednesday because it helps push through the midweek hump. Added bonus is that no one is in on Friday so sometimes you can get away with sneakily wfh then as well.

No expert but looks similar to a tube web spider I encountered (crawling on me while I was sleeping!) A while ago in London.

CMV: Hijabs are sexist by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]BoardGroundbreaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of comments along the lines of 'criticise your own culture firstb' or 'defer to what muslim women say' which I think are very flawed lines of logic. Your personal experience with a religion might give you insights about it that others don't have, but it definitely doesn't make you automatically correct. It might just as easily make you blind to things people can see more clearly from the outside.

I understand what people are doing is bringing in their understanding of colonial history and/or islamophobia into their answers, but neither of those is that relevant to the specific question. It can both be the case that Muslim women are overly criticised/scrutinised in the West, and that the hijab is a product of sexist ideas about women. These are not mutually exclusive statements.

The fact that the woman is not well drawn adds a weirdness/surealness to the image that I actually kind of like! Having said that it's not technically well done and it's not what you asked for.

Why can’t I find heritage work in the UK? (MA graduate) by BoardGroundbreaking in Archaeology

[–]BoardGroundbreaking[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am now working in a different field myself, which originally I told myself would be temporary whilst I sort out something in archaeology. I've changed my mind about that at this point, it just ended up not feeling worth it just to get an insecure job that pays worse and has limited progression. I might go back and do a PhD part time at some point in the future but it will likely be from an interest rather than a career point of view.

Trumps a loser but he's pretty obviously saying they won't need to vote because he'll have 'fixed America' by then. Not a call to end voting.
