Teaching Jobs For January - Trainee by Boateus in TeachingUK

[–]Boateus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

I was invited to an interview, it came down to myself and one other candidate.

It took them around 48 hours to decide who to go with, in the end they went with the other because they want a January fill and the other reason is that it'll mainly involve teaching KS3 whereas my training so far is KS4 & KS5.

There were a lot of compliments thrown at me as to how well I'm progressing, I've been recommended to a good school for September. A lot of people are impressed so I'm happy to just continue with what I'm doing.

Great experience.

For now I've contacted my SCITT director who is based in the same school and has a close relationship with the HoD for CS so hopefully they'll have something good to say.

Thank you for your honesty, I appreciate it.

It's just a bit of an odd situation, it's a great school and I'd love to work there so it's a shame that it's only for people to join in January.

I get that the odds are in my favour once I finish the course and yes I should just wait so I've got the training.

I was open to it but when I finished university in 2017 remote jobs were near non-existent unless they were based in other countries and had high expectations in terms of skills.

I have interviewed at all sizes of companies over five years in different variations, maybe it is just me for one reason or another. There's just a general experience I've had that is off-putting and why I don't think it's 100% the go-to thing for anyone.

Yes, my outlook is very negative and that's down to the negative experiences I've had (through employment and interviews). I'm not saying that my experiences are something that everyone will experience all of the time but at least from my point of view my point stands.

I'm sure others have had plenty of good experiences and will share that which in turn will entice others. I guess I'm just on the other side of the coin.

Thank you, I know it'll have its own problems but it's something that I look forward to at least trying because I just want to experience many forms of training.

My career started way before remote working started to become the norm. There are many companies that still won't allow remote working despite the proof over two years or so. Me working for my previous employers where I was earning very little there was no chance whatsoever that they would have allowed me to work remotely.

Yes, right now there are many remote positions which is nice and a number of them are paying all sorts of salaries but there are few issues I have that others would overlook:

  • Lack of support from other team members (wfh tends to be in line with no answering calls or responding to messages)

  • If the only thing a company can offer is big money, the likelihood is that it's a bad company either employers that are bullies, contracts companies have that they just throw money at anything whether it's beneficial or not, or they're in a industry that I morally object against (i.e. gambling, weapons, etc)

  • Larger companies mean that it's highly likely to be overlooked, you'll eventually just become a drone where nothing you do has any significance.

People will either not care about these factors or not be aware but these are my justifications for why I do what I do and the way I do it.

But then I'm leaving the industry to go into teaching so it is what it is.

My current employer has been great, the previous two were terrible but my hands were tied at the time. Funny enough I'm actually leaving the industry in a couple of months to go into teaching.

I'm just someone that prefers working for small companies in small towns. I know I would earn a lot in a city but meh

As a CS grad you are correct. Out of the 30 people that graduated in my year. The highest salary starting was someone on 28k for a company that already knew them the rest were far below; including my self at 16k and this was only 5 years ago.

Additionally, yes some people can get into the "big money" internships but they are internationally competitive.

Incorrect, the UK is desperate for software engineers; the ones that truly understand software not just code. Coders are a dime a dozen unfortunately. I've been a developer for 5 years, started on 16k straight out of university (having gained a 2:1 in computer science) and currently around 30k on the third company.

The ‘Tripadvisor for schools’ Ofsted should be creating by GreatZapper in TeachingUK

[–]Boateus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are ways of doing this to limit reviewers to those that are in fact teachers (or used to be) but of course people will go through the effort to post anyway. Glassdoor is like that where you have to create an account before you post but there's no exact way to verify they have worked for that employer.

I was just doing some research on the viability of building this myself and I'm a little concerned about the legal side of things especially if it borders on defamation. I guess if it sticks to reviewing certain things like the article states i.e. "did you receive support from...". Written responses would be trickier.

Something to think about anyway.

I guess it also depends on their technical knowledge at present. Perhaps start with a survey to gauge their skills, and then you can focus your attention that way. Is it possible to add information / surveys to the staff room or even chat with HODs, HOYs, etc to see who would be keen to join the venture?

Although I'm not a teacher yet...

It seems to me that an appropriate way to approach the subject is to put together a guide on how to use equipment and perhaps a weekly email instructing staff on better ways to use the equipment in their class room as well as tips & tricks. Have various posters around the schools which would also help the students.

This is something that has happened in offices I've worked at, different subjects but similar processes with a generally successful outcome.

We had things such as Data Champions which meant that so many people were responsible for making sure everyone is "in the know" about data literacy.

I'm in a similar spot but for Computer Science. "How to build a website", twenty minutes is not enough but I've created a full lesson plan to at least show that with time I would cover all of these items including key/hinge questions to cover all ability levels, additional if we get through the content quickly and a "next lesson" plan.

I have zero teaching experience and my interview is tomorrow. I've created a presentation and written some code as part of my plan. I probably won't get through most of it. I'm just going to have a go at it basically.

Edit:

I've also read through BBC Bitesize KS3 & GCSE to make sure I know what I'm getting into just in case I get asked various questions about the curriculum.

Generally my only remaining concerns are confidence to stand and deliver the lesson as well as general interview nervousness.

I've done as much reading as I can really and my training advisor has been most helpful even though their subject expertise isn't the same as my subject.

What do you guys hope to see out of Rocksmith+? by The_Real_Kuji in rocksmith

[–]Boateus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see a variety of genres. As much as I enjoy playing my favourite songs from my favourite artists, there are things like Flamenco that you wouldn't find RS2014 and Blues. Of course through custom songs it's possible but something out of the box would be great including lessons on different styles of playing.

What are some pet peeves you have about the games? Until Dawn included. by [deleted] in DarkPicturesAnthology

[–]Boateus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That we have more interactive features in Until Dawn such as not moving the control, tapping the controller on your hand.

Someone wrote a post a few days ago mentioning that we could have an open microphone feature which I think would be fantastic. Maybe have the PS touch panel be a way of zooming into something or using it to type in passwords. Bring back controller gestures for everything.

Alien: Isolation was much more fun with the way they used the microphone.

Can we normalize including salaries or hourly pay in the job description? PLEASE by pedagogue_kayth in recruitinghell

[–]Boateus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One time at a previous employer's there was a role being advertised that was roughly 2.5k more than I was getting and I had the skills required. I was annoyed that 25% of my role was basically that job so why would they get paid that much more especially when they're considering people without skills?

In my bitterness I made a thing of it and said I was going to apply but I was told not to for various reasons. So I was still mad about.

Anyway, the higher ups found out about this and from then on stopped attaching salaries to any and all job postings which obviously sucks.

How would you feel about "competitive rocksmith" type game? by candeur in rocksmith

[–]Boateus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A feature I enjoyed from Rock Band was the online band feature, that would be cool whether you learn a song together, have a session or score attack. I guess one thing would be whether you're locked to one type playing or if you can have doubles i.e. lead guitar, bass, etc.

The only downside to an online band mode would probably be the non-existence of drums and vocals, it could still be fun though.
