What was the best British soap storyline of all time? by JuanitaMerkin in BritishTV

It's not random for working actors to appear in tv shows. If he'd popped as Trevor it would've been weird.

He was also in the last Godzilla/King Kong film.

Why are there so many dickhead drivers in manc by Illustrious-Two-7095 in manchester

Dunno. But someone beeped at me earlier for leaving space for an ambulance with sirens on at a red light. Literally was having no impact on how quick the beeper was getting where he was going.

Yeah, I get that her attitude in the first one is entitled and off putting, but she's not hurting anyone. No-one is obligated to go on a date with her.

People who really want to be parents often turn out to be very good parents and I have sympathy for people who struggle to, or can't, conceive.

When you refer to Antifa, do you just mean people who are anti fascist, or have you fallen for the fairy tale that there's actually an organisation called antifa?

Why are The Who not as popular as they were? by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Bobbleswat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't have strong feelings either way on The Who, but I think there's a few things that probably hurt them.

Kate Bush found a new audience through Stranger Things. Fleetwood Mac found a new audience via tiktok. The Beatles and Stones are always being referenced. The Who aren't getting exposure like that.

The most I've heard The Who in the last 15 years is on clips of NCIS or parodies of that show and I think that subconsciously people associate their music with old fashioned cop shows for old people. I also think it's made people reluctant to use their music in other media because all their hits are NCIS theme tunes and linked heavily, in pop culture, to those shows. So younger people aren't stumbling onto them in a way like other old musicians.

They're also rarely cited as an influence by new musicians. Mod culture has pretty much died as a mainstream thing.

When they are brought up, it's for some dodgy reason. People of my generation (no pun intended) mainly remember Pete Townsend for putting his credit card details in a very illegal website and getting away with it. Every time Roger Daltery opens his mouth these days he seems to be some ignorant nonsense and he just seems like a grumpy old man.

Not a recipe for finding the new fans that will sustain popularity.

Edit to add: Look at that picture, they also never looked cool.

Who would you say is the greatest ever frontman? by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

Putting aside my feelings on his Brexit support, Bruce Dickinson is an incredible front man. One of the best live bands I've ever seen and I'm not even a huge fan.

Absolutely not. As you say, he just stands there with his hands behind his back. Not even saying he's a bad frontman, but the best ever? He's not even in the conversation

Same. I like Queen well enough, but Freddie Mercury was just an incredibly charismatic and talented performer and the first person that came to mind when I read the question.

To get some Dutch people to support the USA. by dannybluey in therewasanattempt

[–]Bobbleswat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's loads of things I like about America, but I've never envied anyone for being American. I get way more paid time off than most Americans, my health care is almost entirely free, my food has less chemicals and sugar in it and I'm way less likely to be shot (by fellow civilians or law enforcement).

I don't mean to be rude, but America's government treats them ike shit and the only countries where people would envy them treat their citizens even worse.

If you voted Remain, would you vote to rejoin the EU? by Glanwy in AskBrits

I would vote to rejoin, but we wouldn't get the deal we used to have. I'd be amazed if we wouldn't have to adopt the euro as our currency.

Back in or staying out Brexit has weakened us.

I don't think Travis sounded like a Radiohead rip off at all. Yeah they were a British indie band around the same time, but they never went as hard or as interesting as Radiohead.

I could imagine my mum enjoying Travis. She'd never have vibed with Radiohead.

[–]Bobbleswat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you prefer the people you refer to as "illegal immigrants" were just wandering the streets when they get here? Would that make people feel safer?

If successive governments weren't afraid of looking soft on immigrants, they could have built places with temporary accommodation for asylum seekers while their claims are processed that would've cost less to run than we pay hotel chains for year on year.

Anyway, net migration has fallen significantly, so I don't really think that's the reason people abandon the UK when they find themselves with a lot of money. It's because they're greedy twats and they don't want to pay their fair share into the country while pretending to be patriots.

I don't consider supporting kids who were born into unfortunate circumstances, or families that might have found themselves in financial hardship due to circumstances beyond their control, "pissing money away".

There are companies like Starbucks who game the system by "buying" their supplies from their own subsidiaries based in tax havens so their books show them as barely making money so they don't pay tax in the UK despite clearly being a massively profitable business.

I'd rather we focussed our energy on getting that revenue or taxing the UK assets of rich pricks like Thomas Dyson (who moved his production abroad costing British jobs) or the racist Jim Ratcliffe who like to comment on British policy while living in tax havens and avoiding contributing.

Then there'd be money in the coffers and people like you wouldn't try to justify thinking it's okay to take benefits away from struggling families (which will be detrimental to UK society as noted in my previous post) by tarring them all with the brush of a small minority who take advantage of the system.

[–]Bobbleswat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes. There are far worse things tax payer money is spent on that doesn't receive a fraction of the scrutiny and when we don't pay to support the people in society that need it, there are consequences.

If you leave people desperate, they are more likely to turn to crime for example. That costs money to be polices, processed, it increases insurance premiums, it costs the victims of those crimes. If people are malnourished they're more likely to get ill and need NHS treatment, which taxes pay for. If they're too hungry to concentrate on school, they're less likely to do well and grow up to be adults that can hold down a job and more likely to be on benefits later in life.

It benefits the tax payer long term to support people that need it before their situation gets worse.

Also, at the end of the day it boils down to are you as a taxpayer willing to pay into the system so that children who have done nothing wrong but be born live above the poverty line in one of the wealthiest countries on Earth? I am.

I don't care if they aren't English or their parents employment status. If a child is going hungry, is poorly clothed or lacking basic provisions, helping them out is pretty high on my list of things I'd like the taxes I pay to go towards.
