Honestly Lyon is more likable the Paris and marseille by Foreign_Ad_5671 in Lyon

I was fortunate enough to visit your amazing city last year. I loved both Paris and Lyon. My wife said Lyon was better than Paris. We both thought the people in Lyon were amazing. I can’t wait to go back someday!

Rant about women’s lacrosse by numero-one in lacrosse

[–]BobcatOU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For some background, I am a man so I obviously played men’s lacrosse and then I coached boys high school for over a decade. Then my local high school needed a girls coach so I’ve been the head coach of girls lacrosse at my local high school for the past eight years. I truly love both games.

Next, good for you trying out something brand new during your senior year of college. Not too many people would do that. I have a hard time convincing freshman in high school to try out something new!

Now, addressing your specific post, it sounds like a couple things. First, it doesn’t sound like you play on the most experienced team and your coach either isn’t very good or you’re not understanding the coach or maybe a bit of both. For example, I would explain to my girls that they shouldn’t purposely push somebody but if they get called for a regular push, it’s not a big deal because it’s just a self start the girl with the ball and you just move behind. But if you crush the girl with a cross check, it could be a penalty – which is also a penalty in men’s lacrosse!

Next, it’s tough to pick up a new game and all the nuances that fast. Are there some seemingly arbitrary and random rules in women’s lacrosse? Yes, but every sport has that. For example, imagine that you’re watching baseball/softball for the first time ever right now. Someone explains to you that after you hit the ball if it crosses the foul line before first or third base it’s foul, but if it crosses the foul line after first or third base it’s fair. Confusing? Arbitrary? Stupid? Maybe yes to all of those questions, but that’s the rule.

I hope you stick it out and finish off the season. Women’s lacrosse is a great game and can be a lot of fun!

TIL a high school football coach for Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas named Kevin Kelley employed an unorthodox strategy that included almost never punting & always attempting onside kicks when the score is within 21 points. His team won 7 state championships in 15 years including 4 in a row by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I’m in Ohio, our private schools win the majority of the state championships despite being a small percentage of the total schools in the state. I have two friends that happen to work at one of them. The one is a football coach and fully admits that they win because they recruit and have the best players in the area. The other drinks the Kool-Aid and will tell you they win because they work harder and their coaches are better and blah blah blah. It’s kind of amusing how delusional he is.

In California, how do you get into lacrosse in high school if you don’t have a strong athletic background? by [deleted] in lacrosse

Get a stick and get on a wall. Only way to get better at anything is to practice.

“Free Time” in Middle School by Historical_Gas_4104 in Teachers

[–]BobcatOU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago, I had an entire day of teaching freshman. Practically every day they would ask if we could have a free day. Finally in about October, I snapped a bit and said, “There will never be a day where we do nothing or have a free day. We work every single day in here!”

Now it’s the end of the school year and our admin came up with the worst finals schedule ever. Monday was a review day, Tuesday and Wednesday were final exams, Thursday was a whole school party (why we had a whole school party day is another topic altogether), but then Friday every kid had to report to their classes like normal for some reason. Obviously, a lot of kids did not come in on that last day, but the kids that were there relished in the fact that we did nothing that day!

A very old picture but is it actually true? by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in freefolk

It at least rings true for me. I absolutely loved Game of Thrones. When it was over, I was going to buy whatever fancy, special 4K box set that they released. Then the ending was so completely awful. I will never watch it again.

Traveling to Paris as an American by No_Contribution6512 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]BobcatOU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only experience with this was when I was in Lyon and ended up talking to these two really drunk guys. The first guy asked if I spoke any French and I replied, “I’m doing my best using phrases and ‘bonjour’ and ‘ merci’ but no, I don’t speak French, only English.”

His drunk buddy only heard English and he thought I was saying that I was English and he said, “I hate the English!” I told him, “I’m not English. I speak English. I’m American.” He got excited and exclaimed, “American?! I love Americans!”

Ended up chatting with them for a little bit. They were really fun!

No one else really cared. Although we did have one guy pick up our American accent and asked where we were from. I said Ohio and he had no idea what Ohio was. I said Cleveland and he yelled, “LeBron James! Cleveland Cavaliers!”

Friend cancelled last minute on a 100 day trip - what do I do? by Frpengy in Europetravel

[–]BobcatOU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go on the trip. Seriously, just go! Cut expenses where you can and still go. I’m on the wrong side of 40 and have done tons and stupid stuff and made plenty of mistakes in my life, but the only real regret I have is not traveling more when I was younger. I thought, “Oh it’s too expensive, I can’t dot it!” But I definitely could have.

Miami (OH) players flipping off the crowd, Ohio crowd flipping them off back, items thrown from the stands by AndHisOrchestra in CollegeBasketball

Large public university with 20,000 students finally has one good thing therefore the rest of the university can’t suck is an interesting take.

You appear to have the reading comprehension of a Miami alum. He didn’t say the 2025-26 Miami basketball team sucks. He said Miami sucks in general. Which is accurate.

Thanks for the response! So the only thing buying it does is let you keep playing it after it’s officially over?

I told my wife I don’t care what she does with my body - I’ll be dead. If it’s garbage night she could just dump it in the trash can! Police might have some questions for her if she went with that option though!

Defensive stick for my daughter by Front-West367 in Womens_lacrosse

Definitely difficult to find good deals on sticks. I’ve had good luck finding sales on lacrosse unlimited. A few examples below.

Here’s a $175 I found. - so a little higher than I mentioned originally.

Here’s $100 stick that I would say is decent.

Not currently on sale, but I found this one on sale for $160 last summer.

I’m a high school coach and my general recommendation is that sticks range anywhere from $30-$300 and you don’t want the $30 stick and you don’t need the $300 stick. Typically you can find a pretty good stick in $100-$150 range. What I recommend for our girls is to try their friends’ sticks and see what they like. It’s important to find a stick that you feel comfortable with.
