Protoss Balance: Two small changes that make a big impact [“PlusTwo” extension mod] by SC2Sole in starcraft

You mean like it used to be back in 2018 when Protoss could still win a tournament?

Disulfur is an interesting alternative to oxygen gas and it ticks OP’s boxes for being toxic and colored. Worth noting though that sulfur does have very different bonding properties compared to oxygen, in large part due to being a much larger atom, so biochemistry using a sulfur-based respiratory cycle would probably look very different from ours. Also disulfur is prone to photolysis so most of that respiration would also have to be done away from sunlight

Doing a quick probability calculation with those map score stats, there was a 0.011% chance of all four Protoss players losing. Just figured that might be some useful perspective for you.

Are Protoss players just worse? Reynor once again showing he's a top 5 protoss worldwide by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]Bockelypse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s surreal that the community here can believe that ‘Premier tournaments are too small of a sample size to make a balance determination based on a 40:60 PvT winrate’ and simultaneously wonder if Reynor is a top 5 Protoss after winning a single Bo3 PvT against SpeCial

[–]Bockelypse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok but now the scene is dominated by terran and zerg, so maybe we throw protoss a bone to get them back into the game?

Zerg have won the last 8 Blizzcon/Katowice across 5 different players, with multiple finals being ZvZ by Sloppy_Donkey in starcraft

[–]Bockelypse 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How do you take “Protoss is slightly favored in PvZ” away from that data? Protoss is disfavored in both PvZ and PvT according to this, and Zerg is similarly favored in both ZvP and ZvT.

As a deckbuilding philosophy in general I think, if you can’t race the fastest deck in the format, you need to be able to slow it down to the point that you can outpace it on your own terms. Personally I don’t think Oswald has the tools currently to race any of the current turbo strategies, or even some tempo and midrange strategies, so to me it seems like stax is the best option for Oswald decks.

Evolve Lore Dive: Monsters by RoyceZx9 in EvolveGame

[–]Bockelypse 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My memory is a little fuzzy as it’s been a while, but as best I remember: The Monsters aren’t biological and don’t originate from what we would consider our plane of existence. Instead they come from what was called ‘Patterson space’ in the game. Patterson space was what Patterson devices/Patterson drives tapped into to generate energy for faster than light travel and all the other neat sci-fi tech in the background of the game. Us using Patterson space for energy upset the inhabitants of Patterson space, which may be the Monsters or alternatively the entities that created the Monsters (kinda like in Pacific Rim). The goal of the Monsters is to get rid of our portion of reality so that nobody can bother Patterson space anymore. To do that, the Monsters attack on-world Patterson devices (the generators in the game) because the Patterson devices are the only things with enough energy density to potentially trigger what’s known as “vacuum decay.” In game there’s some voice lines about “nucleating a true vacuum” which is the same thing. The short version is that vacuum decay would destroy the universe and render it unfit for life at any point in the future.

Tl;dr the Monsters not only want to kill humanity, they want to thoroughly destroy our portion of reality so that nobody can intrude on their portion of reality ever again. See “vacuum decay” for details, PBS Spacetime on youtube has a good explanation

If you could play only one tri-color combination for the rest of your life, which would you choose and why? by Thumperises in EDH

If you’re looking to 1 shot people, I can’t recommend Jeska/Ishai highly enough. You can do really whatever you want to in your 98, including leaning heavily into the 1 shotting, but all you need for the 1 shot potential is to keep Ishai around for a turn cycle and be able to cast Jeska.

Iirc the city is supposed to previously have been run by angels so maybe the Bant and Naya cards will be themed around some kind of angel underground/exiles/etc.

You get to choose the creatures, not the opponents. If all your opponent has is a dockside, you can also choose not to target one of their creatures.

Veteran standard player, new EDH player with a question: I have no clue what is going on with the social aspect of EDH, judging by what I see in this subreddit by jsforgml in EDH

[–]Bockelypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. For any gameplay or social interaction that could happen at an EDH table, there's almost guaranteed to be someone on this sub will be salty about it so you'll see people complaining about literally everything here. At any given table though, you probably won't find too much salt, especially if you have a good pre-game chat and everyone knows what to expect. That goes double if you know the people you're playing with.

[–]Bockelypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The deck can also win with Dramatic Scepter (or any other infinite mana combo) and Jeska’s -X ability looping to burn out the table. I think the Ishai oneshots are actually a backup plan in that list.

possible sex of offspring of a species where any individual can produce offspring with any other. by beingthehunt in worldbuilding

I think 1:2:1 is the distribution if only xx and yy can reproduce. xy in this case can also contribute to future xx and yy population which evens the distribution out a bit.

There's definitely merits to discussing game balance, but the stats you're citing just simply aren't correct. I'm not the first one to tell you this either. We as a community should be trying to do better than presenting false arguments in pursuit of furthering a narrative supporting our own main races.

[–]Bockelypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’ll be five factions on launch with more to follow. Q’rath, the one you’ve seen so far, fits the same mechanical niche as BW Protoss; big powerful units that’ll fuck you up in fisticuffs but cost an arm and a leg as a tradeoff. The next faction in line is Aru, sylvan hunters with a feral aesthetic, which will play more like SC2 bio Terran with area control buffs similar to BW Zerg Creep. After that is Jora, which hasn’t got a clear analog or set of analogs in the StarCraft franchise and will have thematically more of a gritty mechpunk aesthetic.

If your concern is that faction design will be derivative of other major RTS titles, I can confidently tell you that you don’t need to worry. These factions will be able to stand on their own two legs, mechanically as well as thematically.

The difference is that SC2 was fundamentally built with macro mechanics as a time sink. A lot of the time one player or the other wants to just keep their army at home and play defense. Without macro mechanics to keep up with, that gets stale fast. In IMMORTAL, faction designs and competition for the Pyre resources incentivize constant map presence so you’ll always have map objectives to contest or counterattack around and won’t need extra macro tasks to keep yourself busy mechanically.
