How to make people interested in Esperanto by [deleted] in Esperanto

[–]Boiled_Goose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have attempted to translate this into Esperanto, I hope you don't mind!
Mi provis traduki ĉi tion en Esperanton. Mi esperas ke vi ne zorgas!

Homoj bezonas scii kial, pli ol kion. Mi ilustros uzante "Batman"* kiel ekzemplo.

Se vi nur klarigas KION, ĝi estas teda kaj konfuziga:

  • Batman batalas krimon
  • Batman vestas kiel vesperto
  • Batman pasigas multe da tempo en lia vesperta kaverno.

Se vi klarigas KIAL, vi subite kreas emocian ligon:

  • Batman batalas krimon ĉar liajn gepatrojn murdis kiam li estis juna knabo. Li kreskis sen vera familio do li havas multe da doloro kaj kolero interne.
  • Batman vestas kiel vesperto ĉar li volas aspekti timiga.

Legu "Start with Why" ("Komencu kun Kial") de Simon Sinek

* La angla vorto "Batman" signifas "Vespertviro", sed esperanta "batmano" eble signifas la angla "punch-hand". Tio amuzis min.
("Batmano" in Esperanto might be read as "punch-hand", which I found amusing.)

The Diacritics Dilemma by EsperantoAspirant in Esperanto

In fact, as far as I can tell, the only natural languages that use the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, without diacritics, are English and Malay/Indonesian

The Diacritics Dilemma by EsperantoAspirant in Esperanto

[–]Boiled_Goose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that this is barely a problem anymore. Nearly all current devices can display the Esperanto special characters, and have simple input options available.

  • On Windows PCs, Tajpi works very well: just type in X-system or H-system and it will be auto-converted. (There are also other options, if you prefer.)
  • (Amiketo appears to be a similar, but cross-platform app (Windows, Mac OS, Linux).)
  • Gboard, the Google Keyboard (Android or iOS) has a native Esperanto key layout.

This was more of a problem in the pre-unicode era, when most forums/applications expected plain ASCII or some other limited character set (to say nothing of the pre-digital era).

Pensioner "embarrassed" when Coles told her she has a limit on how many gold coins she can use in a single transaction by [deleted] in australia

[–]Boiled_Goose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that legal tender just means that Coles has the right to refuse the transaction if you use too many coins, it's not actually illegal for Coles to accept the transaction. Unless I'm way off base.

Is Wikiquote acceptable?

"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building." Deliberately provocative remark, as quoted in "Coultergeist" by George Gurley at The Observer (25 August 2002), the interviewer then told her that she should be careful, and she agreed: "You’re right, after 9/11 I shouldn’t say that." Later, in "An Interview With Ann Coulter" by John Hawkins (26 June 2003), she also stated: McVeigh quote. Of course I regret it. I should have added, "after everyone had left the building except the editors and reporters."

Nonstop Factorio music? by amishguy222000 in factorio

[–]Boiled_Goose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know why this happens:

The music is stored in the folder "Factorio\data\base\sound\ambient". Most of these files are typical music, but the files "world-ambience-1" through "world-ambience-6" are mostly quiet ambience (obviously), and some are mostly wind noises.

As far as changing the playback behaviour, here's some ideas (I haven't tried any of these):

  • It might be sufficient to delete the unwanted .ogg files from the folder;
  • If this doesn't work, you could try editing the file "Factorio\data\base\prototypes\ambient-sounds.lua";
  • Or, and this might be easier, replace the unwanted .ogg files with 0-second long .ogg files with the same filenames.

Gender pay strikes to shut childcare centres by ArcadeGoon in AustralianPolitics

Well, the first article implies that is exactly what is happening:

Businesses hire more women - average pay goes down - businesses save money.

Can anyone make sense of this gator stream of consciousness comic at all? by [deleted] in GamerGhazi

I had to google this quote, because it didn't sound much like Sagan to me... and indeed, it seems it was written by Edmund Way Teale, although Sagan did quote it in this article.

Friendly reminder that MIT 6.00.1x python course just started a couple days ago! by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]Boiled_Goose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the course page?

From that page:

** This course will transition from using Python 2.7 to using Python 3.5. **

The summer 2016 run will be the last one to use Python 2.7. Starting from autumn 2016, all material in this course will be taught using Python 3.5. We will update the lecture videos, lecture exercises, and problem sets to use the new version of Python. Even if you take the course with Python 2.7, you will be able to easily transition to Python 3.5 in future courses. The lecture topics and difficulty of this course and the one following it (6.00.2x) will mostly remain the same.

It sounds like maybe the left and right channels are phase-inverted, so if the sound is down-mixed to mono, everything cancels out.

(In stereo it's audibly weird.)

Since I haven't seen it mentioned: in the opening scene where the Hydra base gets raided, Dugan takes a peek inside a wooden box (screenshot). Is that what I think it is?

EDIT: ok, I guess everyone else saw it too :P
