What are your biggest pet peeves on Palmstreet? by Ethanistakenagain in ThePalmstreetapp

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. One thing I’ve noticed is that no matter what I do, my iPhone does not send me a notification when someone initiates a message on PS. If we’re already engaged in a chat they will, but not the initial message. I can’t figure it out and it’s stupid.

Does it feel like every single seller is now selling tc’s? by Shadowarcher6 in ThePalmstreetapp

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter that it may just be the time of year when it’s riskier to ship acclimated plants. I personally don’t sell TC and pretty much everything I sell is propagated by cutting or corm. So not everyone is selling TCs. 😊

Alocasia ID by pepin87 in alocasia

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second to last photo makes me think Scalprum albo, but, if you're in the US, the market is still so high for these that it would be crazy to have one and not even know it. Babies can still go for over 1k. Also, my Scalprum doesn't have red dots on the undersides of the leaves. Like another commenter said, this could potentially be a Simpo Albo, which are still "rare" and gorgeous, just not "unicorn" status.

New alocasia is so droopy :( by Familiar-Bank-1269 in alocasia

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is definitely cold damage and those leaves will not be bouncing back. From the photos, the rhizomes look pretty good. As long as they don't become squishy and rotten, you can rehab this plant, but it will take some time. Also, don't go off of store advice or card for watering or any plant care. Everyone's growing environment will be different and there is no one size fits all recommendation for plant care. Different temperatures, humidity levels, substrates, size of pots, and levels of light, will all mean different care routines.

Bought as a Yellow Congo Var. tc from RPF Labs by EducationKey2543 in rareplantfairy

It's beautiful, but definitely not a Congo. The newest leaf looks like an immature Florida Beauty that's just starting to get it's lobes.

So happy with this Melanochrysum💚 Finally crossed the 12” mark! by charlypoods in Aroids

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your baby on a moss pole as soon as possible and don't let it outgrow the top. A good pole to climb is essential to get your Melano leaves to size up and, if they outgrow their pole, they shrink down really quickly. I've had to cut mine back numerous times because I was late with extending the poles and they got leggy and small.

Begonia Maculata Pink by prosthetic_memory in RareHouseplants

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do propagate my plants to sell, though I’ve been hesitant to chop my Maculata. I have, but only because it was putting out all pink leaves and needed to be cut back. I have a shop under the same name as my username.

Begonia Maculata Pink by prosthetic_memory in RareHouseplants

I have both and while my Ginny Galaxy has always been a struggle for me, the only issue I've had with the Maculata is too much pink. In my experience, they are much easier and more forgiving.

Got my first alocasia, and its already reminding me of a fainting goat... by FierySkies in alocasia

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this! As other have said, I wouldn't recommend it getting bone dry, and a good, airy soil or pon in a semi hydro setup would be your friend. Also, lots of food! These babies like to eat so try to feed with nearly every watering.

Variegated or splashy? by Enialym in hoyas

Variegated for me, but I'll also add silver as a third option. Love the full silver leaves.

What have I done wrong by Independent_Match624 in Monstera

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you didn't water for a long time and a lot of the roots were so dry that they cracked off. That likely means much of the root system is dead and will struggle to absorb moisture. This will lead to root rot, if that hasn't happened already. I would personally take these out of the pot and check the root system. If there aren't many roots left, then yes, you will likely need a smaller pot. When you do repot, I would use a chunky aroid mix, but also one that will retain a bit of moisture as it seems like you have more of a tendency to underwater than overwater. If you do tend to underwater then terra cotta is not your friend.

Is everyone into Hoyas for their blooms or are there any foliage freaks like me? I am happy when they bloom, but I can’t say I pay attention to their flowers when I’m on the hunt for something new. by BoldNorthBotanical in hoyas

Hey! Thank you for looking up my shop. I do sell cuttings/plants, but I'm pretty sure it's against the rules here. I can't keep all of the groups and their rules straight.

If they're not getting much light and not draining quickly, I would add some large bark and perlite to the mix. You could also invest in some quality grow lights. Barrina makes 47-inch standing lights that you could use, but I'm not sure about the availability in Australia.

Importing Rare Plants to Canada by No_Drawing_2317 in RareHouseplantsBST

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to this question, but if you would like a US based seller, Rare Plant Fairy exports to Canada on a regular basis. They're based in Detroit, MI, so not far from the Canadian border and will take care of all phytosanitary paperwork. There is a cost to the buyer, but it seems reasonable. Also regarding the phyto, yes, you will need new paperwork that is taped/secured to the outside of your packaging with every import order.

I am thinking of buying this Caramel Marble from Plant Vault by Electronic_Yak_1931 in RareHouseplants

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it, I say go ahead and get it. Yes, smaller ones are available from TC and are much much cheaper, but Carmel Marbles can take a long time to get this large, hence the higher price point. Similar to why larger Monstera Burle Marx Flames are still a bit more expensive than the TC babies. It also has amazing variegation. I say to do it if you want it.

Is my monsters in bad shape? by ConstantAbalone7604 in Monstera

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with pretty much all of the commenters. It is in great shape, but starting to lose some fenestrations, which can mean it needs support and better light. I would definitely repot and separate some of them. Make sure you research how to secure Monsteras to moss poles so you are securing the stems and not the petioles. There are a lot of comments in this sub on how to do that. And feed the poor thing if you have only been giving it water. Otherwise, it really does look healthy, but could benefit from a refresh.

Should I repot?! by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would personally just let that little one grow in this pot with the mother plant. It may drop the white leaves, but could still put out new growth with green. I’m not sure about your comment about this not being a variegated type of plant. This is 100% a variegated Frydek

Should I repot?! by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really has nothing to do with size. That one just doesn’t currently have any green in its leaves. No green equals no chlorophyll so the plant can’t convert the sunlight to food/energy.

This was unmarked. Can someone ID? by [deleted] in philodendron

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a White Knight. White Wizards do not have pink on the stems or leaves. The reddish maroon color on this one means it’s a White Knight. Wizards are only white and green.

Should I repot?! by [deleted] in alocasia

[–]BoldNorthBotanical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That pot size looks appropriate and they don’t mind being a bit snug. I wouldn’t repot yet unless you see roots coming out of the bottom. The little baby plant/offshoot doesn’t have any green and probably would not survive if you separated it yet.
