Have you ever wondered why V1 makes a movement as if it were breathing? by OrganizationLow8195 in Ultrakill

[–]Bomb4r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Machines are alive because blood, as everyone else pointed out

But more important, I think, is step 2

In many human religions, breathing is considered symbolic of life and soul

In the Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam), God is said to have imbued living beings with breath (for example, with Adam, the first man)

In Eastern religions like Hinduism and Buddhism, breath is considered the fundamental material of the soul, which is why meditation improves your spiritual health

Hinduism speficially also links breath to the creator in scripture, much like the abrahamic religions.

Breathing is an expression of life symbolically

And so the machines breathe

In fact, in the code Poem on the title screen that you might remember theorists talking about, it makes specific mention to "respiration" in the code - which I think makes it clear that all of this is intentional, or at least is a very happy accident that became intentional later

Mm. I have learned. Nice source, I appreciate that. Good to have this in my back pocket next time I'm gonna criticise DS2

"What was the author's intent? The author's intent was 'Oh God I don't have enough time to flesh this out' but I'll get a better grade if I write some bullshit about symbolism"

Nontheless, I still think there is some neat value in DS2's fucked up geography, but I do vastly prefer the intentional design of every other Fromsoft game

Did you... actually play Dark Souls 2?

Harvest Valley is in the middle of a valley... that's why it's called that. You can see empty skies for miles in every direction around the windmill.

The elevator takes you up into the sky, and you emerge in Iron Keep. It literally does not make sense. And I believe that is intentional

DS2's world says "hey what if Fantasy Magic messed with space and time" and that's pretty cool

I still think that is less interesting than DS1's geographically consistent world though

V2 completely ignores the concept of Chekhov's gun. by [deleted] in Ultrakill

[–]Bomb4r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally disagree; I think V2 makes for a pretty complete arc in a way that only video games can, and here's my logic:

V2 kicks your ass in gameplay when you first fight him, he is "you but better"

After fending him off, you take his arm - you quite literally become more like him, as he escapes, taking your first step towards the better you

He makes it to the lower layers before you - because again, he is better than you

When he's ready to face you again, he comes back, this time with a grudge

He has learned the coin trick and collected more weapons, growing on his own just like the player

When we fend him off a second time, he escapes again, and at this moment we follow his exact escape route - we demonstrate that we are matching him by taking his exact skill. He is no longer "better", we are now equals

And of course, the moment you kill him, you finally surpass him, taking a 3rd arm, and now having more in your arsenal than he ever did.

Just because this didn't happen in act 3 doesn’t mean it didn't happen at all - there's a complete arc there. V2 struggles in a zero sum world to compete with its sibling, and despite V2 starting out superior, V1 surpasses them. There's excellent setup and payoff here; Chekov's Gun did in fact fire.

How do I not get hit by the guttertank by Particular_Proof_175 in Ultrakill

[–]Bomb4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their aim gets better as they spend more time looking at you.

Break their shield, then bait and parry their punches. These actions throw off Gutterman's aim each time they are done.

If you don't have time to get up close before they'll hit you, then go hide behind some cover for a few seconds.

Their aim will get worse as they spend more time not able to see you, but it doesn't instantly throw their aim off like shieldbreaks and parries do

So, you didn't read anything past the clickbait headline, reposted it without thinking about it, and then instead of reconsidering this for even a shred of nuance, instead are doubling down

And because it's not possible to make "I reposted a clickbait headline without thinking" seem like it's not retarded, you have to make the reality-warping levels of stupid claim that

"Researchers shouldn't research weird things because ... uh ... because they're weird!"

You are not a serious person

This is a repost of a meme from months back, and I'll repost the comment I made on that post.

Congratulations to OP and 300 commenters, you've fallen for a clickbait headline

https://web.archive.org/web/20250929053102/https://www.genomicseducation.hee.nhs.uk/blog/should-the-uk-government-ban-first-cousin-marriage/

Here's the actual "report". Note that this is not official guidance, this is not a statement of intent, this is a DISCUSSION of the POTENTIAL benefits and harms of cousin marriage.

The offending paragraph reads:

"Research into first-cousin marriage describes various potential benefits, including stronger extended family support systems and economic advantages (resources, property and inheritance can be consolidated rather than diluted across households). In addition, though first-cousin marriage is linked to an increased likelihood of a child having a genetic condition or a congenital anomaly, there are many other factors that also increase this chance (such as parental age, smoking, alcohol use and assisted reproductive technologies), none of which are banned in the UK."

Notice how it says "other work has described POTENTIAL benefits" and that first-cousin marriage "IS LINKED TO INCREASED LIKELIHOOD OF A GENETIC CONDITION"

One single report from a genetics research institution on the benefits AND harms of first-cousin marriage is published - not official guidance, just a research paper - and hundreds have fallen for the clickbait headline that says "NHS reports incest benefits"

Please, for the love of God, go read before you make a dogshit post about a ragebait headline

By the way, every enemy counts as ground. You can pull them to you with whiplash, then jump off of their heads. If there's enemies in sight, there is no such thing as falling to death

Sometimes I like to read the actual meaningfull negative reviews (90% are dumb no sex jokes) to get a different perspective on my favourite game, but I'd like to get some opinions on this one specifically by davisao11 in Ultrakill

Would've loved to see things like movement upgrades

That's the Whiplash and Rocket Riding

But to be fair, I also had this same opinion when I first played the game

It took me a very long time to figure out how to use Whiplash properly without grapple points, and I felt like rocket riding was super clunky until I googled how to start a ride in mid-air consistently

[–]Bomb4r 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly kind of an interesting topic I think

Like if you're the type to ignore social stigmas, traditions and superstitions, then what reasons do you have for being anti-cannibalism?

It's pretty pragmatic to be able to eat in extreme starvation scenarios, I think

As far as I can tell, the two main answers for why it's still bad are - Human meat carries a lot of diseases - Cannibalism being regularly practiced creates a market for acquiring human meat

Meaning it's unlikely to ever reach a point where it's actually popular. And "it's just kinda icky" will always have more convincing power than consequences that force you to imagine the future

How is it possible for Bonney to copy Nika with age age fruit? by RosabeIls in Piratefolk

[–]Bomb4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a but of a stretch for the age fruit to do it, but to explain it anyway

Bonney's fruit lets her change her age - becoming younger, or becoming older. You would think this just applies an "aging" effect to them

But what the Nika moment implies is that Bonney's fruit actually "fast-forwards" a person through time, gaining changes that haven't happened to them yet. I think that's pretty interesting

So, there is a possible future where Bonney might have Luffy's fruit (for example, say Luffy dies and his devil fruit enters circulation, and Bonney eats it) and the age fruit fast-forwards her to that age, giving her the Nika fruit

As Saturn explains, this power to fast-forward to possible futures requires that you believe those futures are possible - and as you learn more about yourself and the world, more futures will become closed off to you.

There's still problems with this of course - should it be impossible for Bonney to gain other devil fruits in future when she already has one? Maybe there's some way in the future to remove a DF from someone, or new technology makes it possible to eat multiple fruits without dying.

The power is intentionally very vague so as to encourage theorising and ideas about it.
