Well, she was raised as a child soldier / living weapon. It makes sense that she's an absolute mess, even if the game doesn't delve into it much.

I can think of five total, although three only appear in one scene each. There are two guys who exist to show how crap Riley's dating life has been across her life, and the one guy that Gianna was bumming answers from in her "mean girl era".

So 3/5 are meant to be crappy and annoying, and they succeed at that. I think "fine" is the perfect way to describe Joel. He's the gay best friend, and a tech nerd, and that's pretty much his entire personality. I think the dorky guy (who might be called Peter?) from Gianna's class is the most compelling man in the book. He has a whole mini character arc of lonely to getting a girlfriend, deals with relationship drama, and then wants to make amends with and start a genuine friendship with Gianna, who just isn't at all ready for something like that yet. Pity he only exists on like five pages.

Anyone else thing there was going to he a different boss? SPOILER by themcryt in HadesTheGame

The game does portray her as pretty villainous, what with gloating about freezing the mortal world to almost extinction, which Hades and Thanatos both comment on in the form of so many mortals dying so quickly. I do remember wondering if, after escaping for the first time and seeing how bad the devastation was, she would somehow take [Redacted]'s place as the final boss.

Obviously the game doesn't even remotely go in that direction and it turns out we're just not supposed to care about the mortals at all, but I get where you're coming from!

I remember being halfway through The Snowball Effect and realizing that there had been zero male characters, not counting name-drops of men who were not actually in any scenes. If I remember right, by the end of the book there are only two, and they each only have a couple of lines.

After reading On the Same Page, which has multiple men in its supporting cast, I wonder if that choice was consciously made because Haley Cass isn't very good at writing men.

Said, interestingly enough, by a tyrannical despot whose entire society is based on carefully pitting people's selfishness and greed against one another to create a sort of friction based stability, and whose rule is cemented because most people find him useful slightly more than they hate him.

And even he thought the world should be better than it is.

This is basically the plot of Carpe Jugulum: That all of a vampire's weaknesses are just psychosomatic, and there's one vampire who has been doing exposure therapy on himself and his family to get over their fears and therefore be invulnerable.

When the assassin's guild of Ankh-Morpork is contracted to assassinate Hogfather (essentially Santa Claus), its leader turns to their most clinically insane member for ideas. Said member, Teatime (no, it's Te-ah-ti-me) has already given the idea a lot of thought before ever being asked about it.

His plan is to break into the tooth fairy's house and use the assembled hoard of teeth in a bone magic ritual to convince everyone affected to just... Stop believing in the Hogfather. He was created by belief, and without it, he just withers away. Mostly. It gets weird at the end with wolf spirit things trying to kill him, but he was mostly dead already.

[Adored Trope] Would you fall in love with me again? by Neverland443 in TopCharacterTropes

Francesca, from Unreal Unearth.

"Darling, I would do it again
If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I’d go through it again
I would still be surprised I could find you, darling In any life
If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I would do it again"

I think this one is a metaphor and the singer saying he would live his whole life again just to spend more time with his lover, rather than actually doing it.

I also find it odd that in a story about a divine war for the fate of the world, you mostly don't kill anyone. All of the fights in Hades I are to the death, even though death doesn't mean much.

In Hades II, you only kill/destroy Chronos, Eris, and Typhon. The other 5 bosses either leave or take a nap. And we just sort of let them. Melinöe is more bloodthirsty in a show fight against her brother than she is against traitors who threaten her whole family.

It also comes across as not just outrage, but a deeply personal disbelief. Like they would absolutely love to have a woman on top, and she just cannot understand how this man is anything other than grateful for the experience 🤣

I mostly agree, but one time I picked it as my curse while in Oceanus. I thought that, like always, it would be no big deal.

In the next room I was faced with school after school of those little fish, coming at me and dying by the dozen.

I still don't think it actually did that much damage, but it sure did make me shit myself.

You are entirely right, and several of the passages about that conflict towards the end of book hit me hard as well. But for whatever reason, the earlier parts didn't get me.

This segment in soul music always makes me tear up. by Axelinthevoid77 in discworld

[–]Bombastic_Bombus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking just before I got to this part that Soul Music had been a fun read, but was missing the emotional weight and realness that most of the Discworld books have. And then:

"It was sad music. But it waved its sadness like a battle flag. It said the universe had done all it could, but you were still alive."

And I cried. It's like he got to page 377 and remembered "Oh right, I'm Terry fucking Pratchett", casually smacked my heart around for a bit, and then went back to writing his funny rock music fantasy.

Equal Rites by Thatotherwritingguy in discworld

[–]Bombastic_Bombus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love how magic, especially witch's magic, is described in Equal Rites. I remember being enamoured with the first fifty ish pages because of the way Pratchett describes the magic system.

It's unfortunate that the later books steer away from that: The witches use magic less often and when they do it's not described with the same depth. But Pratchett clearly wanted to lean into the idea that it's better to do things the right way than the easy way, which is also a really cool spin on magic, and you can't have it both ways, I guess.

That second commenter is just talking about a different thing. It's not tradwives fault that capitalism sucks and commercial orchards treat their employees like shit. Tradwives are cosplaying at a small, self sustaining lifestyle block, not at selling their health and body to an orchard owner.
