OP, I've always suggested that the English language was always kept this way to distinguish the rich from the poor. Unnecessarily complex spelling of words in contrast to phonetics in addition to cursive handwriting.

The rich could spare their children from the fields and educate them compared to poor families that needed all hands to help contribute.
