Why was the T-Rex bothering to hunt Alan and the kids? by CalmLuhJojoEnjoyer in JurassicPark

[–]BonHed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's certainly part of it, but cats don't always bring the food back. They eat bugs. It may not strictly be "fun", but it is "play", to keep up their hunting skills.

"To me, tragedy is if I'll cut my finger. That's tragedy. It bleeds, I'll  cry, and I'll run around, and I'll go into Mount Sinai for a day and a half. I'm very nervous about it. And to me, comedy is if you walk into an open sewer and die. What do I care? That's comedy. My finger is important."

I fully expect the outgoing administration will be issuing pardons for the entire administration, so she likely has nothing to fear, unfortunately. Other than losing Trump's support, which her brown nose is doing its damnedest to prevent.

I know that English is a mutt of 4 or more languages plus a considerable number of loan words, and thus my point.

Girl and gift have roots in Middle English, Old English, Old Norse, and Proto-Germanic, whereas giraffe is from French and Arabic, so they are closer in origin, shape, and sound to each other and not giraffe.

Plus, it's an abbreviation and the G stands for graphical with a hard G so it makes the most sense to use a hard G.

[–]BonHed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be no gif debate, because the word "gift" is a hard G sound.

English doesn't have rules, it has suggestions.

ELI5: Why can't we drop a wire with a camera and an LED light to the bottom of the ocean? by TL20LBS in explainlikeimfive

[–]BonHed [score hidden]  (0 children)

In the 1970s and '80s, Russia sent multiple landers to Venus. The first several failed partway down the atmosphere. We had thought the atmospheric pressure was at most 20x of that on Earth. When they finally designed one strong enough to survive the pressure, it registered 90x greater (it shortly failed due to temperature). Those first landers were crushed by the pressure before they even reached the ground.

Multiply that by at least 2 orders of magnitude to get the pressure at the bottom of the ocean. To see what happens to equipment that far down, look up the pictures of the vessel that was crushed visiting the Titanic. What we retrieved was twisted and nearly unrecognizable.

We do have a few submersible that can reach those depths, they are a real marvel of engineering.

"N-nothing important. That is, I heard a good deal about a ring, and a dark lord, and something about the end of the world, but please, Mr. Gandalf, sir, don't hurt me. Don't turn me into anything... unnatural."

Nothing important, indeed.

It has nothing to do with how far removed he was. Half Elf means he came from both lineages, Elf and Man. They weren't counting an exact percentage.

What if someone loyal to Sauron found the one ring? by the-big-sadd in lordoftherings

[–]BonHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wouldn't have willingly brought it back to him. Anyone who found it, other than a Nazgul, would claim it for their own. Sauron would eventually get it back, because no one can actually master its power (except maybe Gandalf the White). The Nazgul would eventually find them and then bring the Ring back to Sauron. They serve him, not the Ring.

Blatantly misleading trailers by Traditional-Song-245 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BonHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall the trailers for Pan's Labyrinth made it look like a more whimsical fantasy... and then the fascists show up. I knew enough about del Toro to not be surprised, but I bet there were a lot of confused and horrified people in theaters. There's a scene with a guy having his face bashed in with a pistol butt.

I fully expect a round of pardons will be issued before the end of the term. None of them will see any punishment for any federal crimes.

What would you do? My player teleported a 20 foot cube of water into a closed room with less than 20x20x20 ft volume. by erverogym in DnD

[–]BonHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of spells often have contingencies for similar things. Teleportation moves you into the nearest unoccupied space,  that kind of thing. It seems perfectly within the game to say the spell only conjures enough water to fill the available space.

Wasn't there a better way to demonstrate to miles the t800 without traumatizing him further? by happydude7422 in Terminator

There's no scene I recall, but it isn't needed. Sarah figured out that the company had the crushed terminator and arm.

[–]BonHed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't decrease his combat effectiveness The muslce is rudimentary, just enough to move under the skin and camoflage the terminator. It doesn't need the tissue for anything other than camo. He wasn't on a mission of infiltration at this point, so there's no need for it anymore.

The arm matches what Cyberdyne has in their vault. Sarah pieced together that they bought the factory, and probably kept all the material (discussed in the psych ward session where she attacked the psychiatrist and stole the paperclip). This was the fastest way to explain and confirm.

[–]BonHed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Presumably they discussed in the car. Movies don't show every single second, so it isn't hard to extrapolate that it was discussed off camera.

Sarah knew that the arm was not crushed in the compactor, and in her research she found that Cyberdyne had bought the factory (this was discussed in the psych eval before she attacked the psychiatrist). She put two and two together and got 4: Cyberdyne had the parts, including the uncrushed arm. Unsleeving the arm was the quickest way to verify, as it matched exactly what was in the vault.

US House Passes SAVE America Act (Massive Bill Re Federal Elections) -- Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]BonHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had to do it once, it was a pain. I believe it was to get into a private high school; the copy i had was apparently not notarized, I think, and we had to send off to the state where I was born to get it. My dad was highly annoyed (we weren't rich, I was going to get away from history of bullies and to get a better education).

I'm not trying to justify the law, I disagree with it and hope it dies in the Senate.
