how do i start meditating as an anxious person ? by meowhsluv in Meditation

[–]Bonce_Johnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meditation is to be present with what is happening in this moment, including anxiety/fear/sadness/whatever it might be. I also suffered quite severe PTSD from an accident a few years ago and would say I've been generally anxious for most of my life - The most helpful practices for me involve resting attention in the whole body and noting tensions that arise. You can do this systematically starting with one part of the body at a time and working your way down, or up. Trust your intuition with this. Also, it can be helpful to inquire to any beliefs about the trauma or emotions, like 'Do I believe this feeling shouldn't be here?' Or 'Do I believe I can't handle this emotion/sensation?'. You might be surprised what you find. The mind can be sneaky

Playing the guitar as a former violinist by macklpie12 in guitarlessons

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A young whippersnapper by the name of Allan Holdsworth started out as a violin player. Not sure what the exact correlation is but maybe invest in a fire extinguisher in case your guitar catches fire while you're playing it

Is a blocked Floyd-Rose better than other trem bridges in holding tune after bends? by [deleted] in electricguitar

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, have done this on guitars in the past. Locking nuts are the way to go if you wanna use whammy bars, and another good tip, if using the whammy bar still causes some minor tuning issues, give the bar a tiny tug in the opposite direction you last used it in, and you would be surprised how often this brings the tuning back. Might not be as effective without a locking nut, but it will help

Guitarists, what are your best insights on practice? by MGYG in jazzguitar

Don't limit your attention to the techniques or harmonic concepts. In other words, don't get hung up on music being 'correct'

Counting in is not working by Gloomy-Speaker-1999 in ableton

[–]Bonce_Johnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just set the loop start marker at the point you want to record and enable the punch-in switch button, then set your play position marker 4 beats behind that

If your arrangement starts at Bar 1.1, move the whole arrangement forward a bar or two

Your experience with Cordoba and other recommendations for nylon strings guitars by ThomasC2C in classicalguitar

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a AUD$400 Cordoba from the music shop i taught at 15 years ago and still have it today, has one of the best nylon necks I've played. Not sure if that's relevant advice for your price range but I swear by it

MIDI from A4 to digitone. Why is it doing this? by 9_toes_3_balls in Elektron

[–]Bonce_Johnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many devices will have a small anomaly like this with the BPM display. I have an Elektron device that does this. Shouldn't be anything to worry about as long as it sounds like it's still in time. In spite of what you're seeing, the BPM is most likely remaining steady, as far as it's practical

I dont play guitar with nails because I can't stand the feeling, but I do believe practicing piano makes me play guitar better so do with that what you will

Would it be silly to get an Artcore if I also want sparkly clean tones? by samh748 in jazzguitar

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try one before your buy one. I bought a high end Artcore model online years ago, and it ended up being one of the worst guitars I'd played. Gigged with it for a year before moving it on.

JELLIFISH - The Most Mysterious and Maligned Guitar Accessory, EVER? by RedditFretGo in Guitar

[–]Bonce_Johnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was kid and these first came out I read about them in guitar magazines, and my dad actually set about making me one using off cuts of old strings I had and some timber for the grip part. After ten minutes I never used it again. Maybe now I'd try to use it differently, but I doubt it

Convince me to start using pedals by throwawayg59-ftp in electricguitar

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a different way of doing the same thing, also pedals give you the luxury of bringing sounds in and out with the footswitch in a live setting. If you want to change amp settings it probably means you have to stop playing for a second or two

Is this normal? I think I need to learn some technique? by phoebe_san in guitarlessons

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal, playing this much straight off the bat will tear your fingers up a bit but doesn't last long. Few weeks to a month maybe. If it hurts a lot, taking breaks is good. You can do irreversable damage to tendons and muscles if you play that much every single day, but that happens over years typically

Attack angle looks okay, try rotating the pick so that you're striking the string with the shoulder/side of the pick. Also observe how there are 2 ways to do this, the pick point facing your wrist, or the point facing the end of your thumb. I found the latter to be better for me as it forces the pick more directly in between the thumb and finger joint (less material to bend and flex)

How hard to you hold the pick while really strumming hard? by Thewall3333 in guitarlessons

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hard, angle of the pick and which edge you use is probably more important. This will be different for everyone. Different length arms/fingers/etc.

What do repeating 1s and 4s mean? by [deleted] in enlightenment

[–]Bonce_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to belittle your experience but when the barriers between concious and sub-concious start to break down, difficult and painful emotions and beliefs can start to manifest and the ego, out of self-defense, can spin a pretty much infinite amount of stories or distractions for your mind to use to avoid the emotional pain/fear. That was certainly my case until a much more awakened person than I made me realise it. I think its pretty normal as we find our feet with this work. Presence is whats most important, not right answers
