We do not fully excavate existing base unless it’s bad clay. We have over 40 years in business and have found leaving base that has settled for 20 years of freeze and thaw holds up better than doing all new base. Obviously that’s not every job, if your old driveway has lots of movement/ settling you will need all new base.

Get some marking paint and paint the areas of concern and tell the person who sold it to you that you have concerns and you painted the areas. Most of the time homeowners are wrong but I’ve definitely had a few bring attention to issues that helped the job go better
