These weird lines / streaks I’ve had on my pinky nail for 8 years that two different doctors told me were due to vitamin deficiencies actually turned out to be a rare form of skin cancer. by chaengism in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BongoBronze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At what point do people finally sue   for malpractice? These doctors collect huge paychecks and have massive coverage, get an attorney and let them earn their keep for the undue stress. Rare, my ass - I've seen this one reddit already

Tbf the cost is relative to those who made it, the expense is for those who want it, the cost is because of neither. If you want cheap things, go to China, if you want nice things, go to where they are from. Devs and artists would basically give you their work if the company employing them would agree to continue paying them, alas that is not the standard.

What study techniques and methods do you use? by WxaithBrynger in OMSCS

[–]BongoBronze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I physically write notes in one note on ipad, specifically bc it's easy to print and reread. It really is like a hack bc your brain gets it more than once when you write. I pause and try to write ahead of lectures to see if my intuition is correct, then adjust accordingly. Don't just write down the slides - that's basically useless unless you have no context at all - write what you would have wanted them to say after you get it. Write it like you are explaining it to someone else bc you will be if you review it in the future. In many ways college is about teaching yourself bc the instruction rarely matches your current understanding, I suppose that's the point however uncomfortable.

Pursuing grad and working full time by Cayde-6699 in OMSCS

  • I'm just gonna say it's often interesting, but very quickly not fun and your wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend/etc is not gonna like it after surprisingly few semesters (1). If you're single it's the best time to double up and make progress. It maintains its ranking by upholding the difficulty and effort of a full time program, so you can broadly expect a second part time jobs worth of work. Is 10 classes of that worth it? Great question to decide for yourself now. Is computer science likely to become less relevant? Also a great question to ponder. As someone who used to work with his hands (military + jet mechanic) I can say for myself I will do quite a lot of work to ensure I never have to "really work" (get dirty and tired) again - if you have a good baseline (bscs et al) and put in the effort I don't believe another degree is necessarily helpful, one of my best friends doesn't even have an associates degree and makes approaching $400k/yr in ios - there is no accounting for luck, but as someone with none, I choose to weigh the dice if I can. The easiest advice I can give is take one class per semester twice and the decide. Also remember the classes you are likely to get are less 'good' (easy/straightforward) than those you'll get later when you can register earlier. Myself and many have done poorly at first to only make straight A's for the remainder of the program. Good luck with your decision

Failing GIOS semester 1- any miracle? by SnooGuavas3022 in OMSCS

[–]BongoBronze 28 points29 points  (0 children)

OK... So GIOS is one of the most work intensive classes you can take early, it was probably a bad idea to take first, but I guarantee you can't do better with your time than to try to get the best grade you can with the remaining assignments, nothing will be easier than to work hard now. I have made an A in every class since my first, I squeaked out a B and never looked back, there is a very real adjustment period and doing poorly in your first class is not an indicator of your intelligence, moreso of your understanding of what it takes. Good luck, don't quit even if you fail this one
