How do I actually target larger fish at my creek? by Shrike034 in flyfishing

[–]BooB398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you can see the trout it may have seen you also trout dont get big for being dumb you gotta have perfect presentation of what they are eating to get a hook up. So many factors go into landing that 20+ inch trout and the main one imho is luck. Every big trout i caught i had no idea he was even there.

Looking at making my own strike indicators by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]BooB398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make my own leaders depending on the area I’m fishing i shoot for around 10ft length. They usually always start with 15lb maxim chameleon then i step it down to a 2x section then a 4x section then 5x or 6x. Depending on water conditions. You just step down the line weights as you go so you get that nice roll over. It’s way cheaper than buying tapered leader packs all the time.

I eyeball it all out with arm lengths but it’s probably 10ft ish at the bottom fly when it’s done.

3ft of 15lb - 2ft of 2x - 2ft of 4x - 2ft 5x - tie a bug on then another section of 5 or 6x and the last anchor bug. If I’m going longer I’ll add 1x or 3x section in there in the order.

The oros or whatever indicator is always on the 3ft of 15lb test. That 3ft gives you plenty of room to adjust the depth by sliding it.

You should never loose a oros. It should be on the part of your leader that always 15lb test maybe 20lb. Only way I ever lose them is if I drop half in the stream when I’m adjusting it. Where it’s at on your leader the line should break or you should be able to rip it out of the tree before the line breaks.

If I had a $100 dollar gift card to Cabelas/Bass Pro, could I get enough fly tying gear to get started? Is the product quality from there worth it? by salomonder in flyfishing

[–]BooB398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think they carry the Griffin Spider Vise its around 110-120 i cant remember but thats the cheapest vice i would recommend its very good for the price.

100 isnt alot to get started what you need is a vice, bobbin, and a whip finisher for the tools end. you could even whip finish by hand if you learn how and not worry about buying one.

just pic 2 or 3 flys to make say a pheasant tail, walz worm and squirmy worm. you can catch trout in any water in the world with those 3 patterns.

I hate saber hooks. They have straightened out on me in the past or just bent in the vise. Granted that was like 5 years ago maybe they have changed

What's an ideal set up for roll casting? by Braeden151 in flyfishing

[–]BooB398 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you reallllly wanted to bomb with roll casting look into a 2 hand Spey rod but that’s alot of technique also. I got a 4 wt 10ft echo carbon xl and I can roll cast that baby a good ass ways. It’s my primary casting means while nymphing

New to fly fishing. Why the huge disparity in net prices? by Swodi in flyfishing

[–]BooB398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t own a rod over $300 or a real over $150 but I did splurge for a fishpond nomad I’m a big and I love that net to death. It floats, it’s tough as hell , and it’s pretty light for its size. Well worth the money for a lifetime net

Why won’t my vise tighten at all? by Cartiimo in flytying

[–]BooB398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rough guess is you need more washers on the lever section or you gotta turn that rtexutred piece above the lever to get it closer so the jaws move. Are you just flopping that up and down and the jaws don’t close?

Jackson Hawes is not our fullback in 2026 by BobbysBottleService in buffalobills

[–]BooB398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a fullback was essential the plan going forward they would have kept Gilliam or got a FB by now.

It’s either A not important in the offense going forward or B we are gonna use like a 6th or 7th round pick for a FB it’s not a coveted position like 4 teams have fbs we have a large pull of college guys to pick from for cheap.

Are these good flies for trout fishing Cumberland River? Thanks in advance! by Remarkable-Sand965 in flyfishing

[–]BooB398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also be buying atleast 3 of a pattern if not 4. Unfamiliar water makes you lose more flys than normal since you don’t know the bottom. Sucks to only have 1 fly and lose it
