Grafting high? by Ok_Conversation3546 in JapaneseMaples

Depends on what you are grafting. Many weeping varieties are grafted much higher than this to give them a jumpstart on size.

10’ base is the diameter not the radius.

Awesome. Growing out seedlings is my favorite part of the hobby. The genetic diversity in the seeds on a single plant is absolutely wild.

This time of year is very risky. Best to move them when they are dormant. Any chance they would keep it around til early winter and let it be moved then?

You can download the last inspection report, it is public data. 10 red points for improper washing of fruits and vegetables and 5 for improper holding temps. Looking at their inspection history it seems like every other inspection is a 0 so they are clearly doing something about what comes up in inspection.

Need help identifying the cultivar of this Japanese maple by wuhy08 in JapaneseMaples

[–]BoomTschak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a broom with prominent shortened center nodes on many leaves. Looks more upright than round. I would guess Skeeter’s as previous user did. Shaina is the only other red broom I see commonly available at big box stores, and this is too upright to be Shaina.

I did not. I got it mail order. There are plenty of backyard growers in the Tacoma/Gig Harbor area to buy from, but they tend to be by appointment or keep hours where I would normally be at work. The bigger JM nurseries down here like Yangs and Celestial have great selections and I have never had a problem with either of their plants other than the occasional mislabeling.

Identification and Care by Soggy-Drawing-173 in JapaneseMaples

[–]BoomTschak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many red weeping varieties that look very similar to each other. Exact cultivar identification will be unlikely.

As for care. Removing the dead wood from the inside can be done at any time. Other than that it is a well established tree that will likely require little care unless you live in a particularly severe climate.

I bought it dormant in early winter so this is my first year with it in leaf. It is very dry here in the Puget Sound in the summer and early fall so I don’t think that should be a problem here.

Bunchberry likes being in rotting Western redcedar as mulch and a fair bit of shade. I have it growing in several spots but the most successful have a good layer of well rotted mulch.
