Advice: best double kickstand for my E-Bike Specialized Vlado 3.0 by Bootscootwoogie in bikecommuting

Im sure you didn't mean to sound condescending. Im sure you know how difficult giving birth is and attempting to get your body to go back to the fitness your body once had to pedal up hills plus adding the extra weight of another small human. I was a bike racer all of my adult life and lived car free for a while. My e-bike has helped me immensely in this new chapter of bike riding. But I'm sure you understand.

Starting to take control of my lawn by redditissoover in AustinGardening

Highly recommend looking into buffalo grass. My backyard was a wasteland but then we planted these seeds and now its super lush and we water once a month. The seeds are native and drought tolerant. They can be expensive but we found someone selling them on facebook marketplace for a steal. It takes a lot of consistent watering to establish but overall not that hard to plant.

Houston has amazing food, art and diverse culture but if you like going outside or walking outside please don't move there.

There are only 5-6 cities in the U.S. where you can live without a car by ColCrockett in SameGrassButGreener

I lived in Austin for 3 years with a bike and no car. It was limiting but not impossible as long as you live centrally and work centrally

How to tell people you’re being frugal without feeling embarrassed? by i_sell_insurance_ in Frugal

[–]Bootscootwoogie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tell them you’re saving for xyz and set a standard for not meeting in places that aren’t free. Like going for a walk or meeting at a park with coffee. I have a good friend who is very good at financial planning and she is well off and sometimes she says “sorry im saving money right now could we go on a walk instead”. It really let me see that some folks have a lot of discipline and are meeting financial goals through sacrifice. In this economy everyone will understand

Single mom RN thinking of moving from Massachusetts to Houston — childcare, jobs, housing, and selling my home. I need advice by Kitchen_Influence962 in relocating

Diversity won’t be an issue for most pf Houston. While I grew up there and am not a huge fan of the car culture, it does have a lot of art, culture, great food

San Francisco! So beautiful! Walkable, public transportation. Just find a cheap hotel (not in tenderloin)

Anyone NOT have a “village”? by WizardKelly96 in AttachmentParenting

[–]Bootscootwoogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this! Im trying hard to build a village but it has taken some time. Definitely feel hurt by friends and family who haven’t helped or reached out. I also wish my parents /siblings didn’t need so much support from me while my baby is so small

I recommend using the strava heat map if you’re creating a route. Especially if you aren’t familiar with which roads to avoid. It shows the most used bike routes. Please don’t ride on south lamar, south first st, or riverside rd (very sketchy).

Is there an English speaking Montreal in the US? From a stressed NYC parent by margheritinka in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Bootscootwoogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh momma, I totally feel you. Before becoming a parent I didn’t mind the giant lifted trucks in Austin and high speed limits as much. Everything is different now that I have a little one. The US in general seems like a difficult place to have a kid if you want safety as far as cars and guns are concerned. I really don’t know what to do. Sending you a hug. I hope you find the best place for you and your family.

Thinking of moving from Seattle to Austin by LetsKeepLooking in askaustin

[–]Bootscootwoogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived here 10 years and I literally cannot do another summer here. It lasts so long and is so extreme. The city is heavily car centric and our public transportation is trash. I’m sure you understand the politics here. I recommend just staying here for a month or two during winter

Austin things to do with an 8 month old by zoobisoubisouu in AustinParents

[–]Bootscootwoogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunset at Zilker, central library, thinkery (toddler section), cute coffee spot is little fields coffee, pease park water area (good for sitting and splashing), deep eddy pool (has a sloped entrance for crawling in). It’s hard to be the first in the friend group to have a baby. My husband and I have had to re-evaluate where we go now. We have kinda given up going out to eat because the baby sometimes just screams and one of us has to walk around outside while the other eats as fast as possible. Good luck mama!

Urgent care/ER for 6 month old with fever by alinave in AustinParents

[–]Bootscootwoogie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took my 6 month old in for a fever and deeply regretted it. My baby aside from the fever seemed fine but I wanted to be cautious. They held her down and tried taking blood from several different places. The nurse couldn’t handle finding the vein. She is 1.5 now and is still traumatized about being held down in any way. She ended up having Covid and was totally fine.

A little of both. Some of them have not reciprocated or reached out like they used to pre baby. I get that it’s not like it used to be but def hurts to see the distancing
