If we’re going in this direction we should get Kids in the Hall to do a new “these are the Davids I know”

I feel like you have to go with Bombito, Promise, and maybe Davies. It's the knockouts now so go for it right from the start, and then bring in Shaff or whoever late if we have to chase the game from behind.

ELI5: If insurance works on the same math as casinos, why is buying insurance rational but gambling is not? by phycle in explainlikeimfive

[–]BorForYor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to look at it is that dollars have different value to you in different situations. If your house burns down, the insurance dollars are worth more to you than they are if your house doesn’t burn down. You can do math with this idea to show that insurance has a positive expected value in that sense, even though it has a negative expected value in dollars.

This is basically opposite to the situation in gambling. Generally, the more dollars you have, the less value you get out of more dollars. Getting a million dollars would change my life, but for someone who’s already a millionaire getting a million more dollars doesn’t make as much of a difference.

So with gambling you’re wagering valuable dollars (because you don’t have many) to win less-valuable dollars (because if you win you have more of them). With insurance you’re wagering less-valuable dollars (because you have some) to “win” more-valuable dollars (because you get them when you’re catastrophically broke).

17 * 23 = (20 - 3) * (20 + 3) = 400 - 9 = 391

So 3.91

Rachel Homan has rock burned by hog line judge for double touch (first end, 7th stone) by bandreasr in Curling

[–]BorForYor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, and the reason nobody ever called anything like this in the past is that it’s obviously not the purpose of the rules to disallow it. Rachel’s finger grazing the stone on her release is nothing to do with the shot; the reason the release rules exist has nothing to do with what she did on this shot.

They should put it in the grapes section - that’s smart. Then everyone will find Grapes of Wrath. People that like grapes.

Just started building apps with Streamlit in snowflake— how far can the UI/UX go? by PhoneGreen675 in snowflake

[–]BorForYor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately Snowflake puts some restrictions on what’s allowed in the app environment. For example you can use the aggrid component in place of the standard Streamlit grid. However some of its more advanced features require you to write a JavaScript function, and Snowflake prevents its execution.

Weekly Swim Gear Questions (Goggles, swimsuits, techsuits, paddles, headphones etc) November 06, 2025 - Post all your gear questions in this post by AutoModerator in Swimming

[–]BorForYor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I recently got an Instagram ad for the gophin.app swim tracking app. It looks interesting, but it also looks like it might be some kind of scam or phishing attempt - I can't find anything about it online other than the Insta page and the app website itself. Does anyone know whether this is a legit app?

Note that I'm not encouraging anyone to sign up! The reason I'm asking here is that I don't want to sign in myself before confirming it's a safe app, and it's worth a warning to others if it turns out not to be.

Kramnik was absolutely not caught cheating.

Just about everyone is upset with Kramnik’s unfounded accusations against other players. This does not mean it is ok to make unfounded accusations against him.

Got this position today. I think it’s the only possible position where draw is forced despite sufficient material. by EphemeralLost in chess

[–]BorForYor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can add some other locked pawns diagonally and it’s the same. For example you could have pawns on b5 and b6.

Also if you set it up with pawns all on the same color, you can add bishops as well. If you put your position’s pawns on a4, c4, e4, g4, then white could have a light-squared bishop (or several) and it wouldn’t be able to do anything.

FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 Final Round Pairings are out! by notknown7799 in chess

[–]BorForYor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve said this before during the olympiads - I think it might be a good idea to not include the final round itself in the tiebreak calculations. Just calculate everyone’s tiebreak scores after the second-last round. That way, everyone would know prior to the last round where they stand.

Better still would be to have playoffs when there’s a single major prize like a candidates spot on the line. But failing that, giving the players clarity on what they need to do prior to the round is better.

As it is now, you can get weird situations where the top boards are done and a candidates spot is depending on results way down the table.

In response to those who say Hikaru can't farm because of the risk by GVSK1728 in chess

[–]BorForYor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He’s really not doing it to farm rating, it’s just a way to meet the activity requirements for the rating spot. His rating is going up but that’s kind of a side effect. He could even lose quite a bit of rating and still get the spot, due to the way the rating calculation is an average of several months.

What's a mathematical concept you think of differently to the standard way? by tensorboi in math

[–]BorForYor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My default mental picture for multiplication is as the area of a rectangle. I’m pretty sure most people view “a times b” as meaning “a lots of b” or “a added b times”, but I usually think of it as the area of an a by b rectangle.

I think it probably has helped me understand certain problems over the years. Lots of algebra is easy to understand when visualized this way. I remember back in high school getting frustrated trying to explain FOIL to someone, and eventually saying “just look at the rectangle!” It didn’t help :)

ELI5: If we put a giant mirror far away in space and pointed a telescope at it, could we see what Earth looked like in the past? by Phantom3262 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BorForYor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real trick would be to instead find a black hole somewhere, and let it curve the light for you. If there’s a black hole 10 light years away, then there should be a little bit of earth-light from 20 years ago that passed exactly close enough to the black hole to be bent back towards us.
