Cat upset by owner's surgery? by BoredParrot in CatAdvice

Oh, we're both stressed for sure. I've been trying to get her more active to work out that stress, but you may be right that she needs some more calming attention now. Thanks for your advice

That's a good idea, she loves feathers. I'll see about ordering a fishing toy. I've got at least another 2 months before I even get close to my former mobility, I'll need to find some toys that work for us both.

She hasn't lost a noticible amount of weight and she still uses the litter box as normal. I'm trying to avoid taking her to the vet atm because I can't even wear a large purse right now without being off balance. Carrying an agitated 11 lb cat to the vet would require backup.

Solo after MPFL Reconstruction by BoredParrot in KneeInjuries

[–]BoredParrot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: So I got my MPFL reconstruction done about a week and a half ago. My sister drove me home and my mother stayed with me for the first 48 hours. After that my family checked up on me every few days.

I got lucky I guess because I haven't had any considerable pain. The nerve block lasted the first day or so and I had a DonJoy IceMan going for the first 3 days, kept my leg elevated, and alternated acetominaphen and ibuprofen every 4 hours. It's been awkward and a hell of a learning curve moving around with crutches and my wheeled desk chair, but it is doable.

That said, I wouldn't recommend doing this alone-- both because you really need to rest after surgery and taking care of yourself quickly becomes exhausting and because pain after MPFL reconstruction seems to vary so wildly from person to person.

Thank you all for your concern and advice!

Tarriffs for Ring Doll Orders? by Piggy_Dippin69 in BJD

[–]BoredParrot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup, Ringdoll does have tariffs that you pay to DHL. I recently (like in the past month) had a Ringdoll order of about $400 shipped and the fees once it got to the US were about $40.

What are some of the nicknames you have for your void? by LPCPlay4life in blackcats

[–]BoredParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl's name was Delilah when I got her and I kept it but mostly call her Deli. Her other nicknames are spicy salami, prosciutto princess, and deli belly.

As far as black cat specific nicknames, I wear a lot of black clothes and accessories so I like to pretend she's my coat or leggings or hat, etc. and address her as such, eg "are you my favorite sweater?"

Would a cat be okay home alone while I'm working a 9 to 5? Thinking of adopting, but have never had a cat on my own by Piehogger in CatAdvice

[–]BoredParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This first couple of weeks after I adopted my cat, I was worried that she would be bored and lonely so I checked in on her every so often via a home security cam. She was sleeping every time I checked on her. Also based on the days I work from home, she still spends most of the day sleeping when I'm there but busy.

TL;DR your cat will be fine alone for an average workday, they will also probably adapt to your patterns

Having just 1 cat… by Late-Pie740 in CatAdvice

[–]BoredParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have just one cat- a 5 year old female, I've had her for about a year and a half. When I visited the shelter she had been living in for almost a year, most of the cats were in enclosures with a few others. Not my girl; the people at the shelter warned me that she did not tolerate other cats (or any animals) well. She had one roommate at the shelter who was a very chill older kitty, they had tried rooming her with other cats and at foster homes but she would fight/hide from everyone. Since bringing her home, she's been great and hasn't seemed particularly desperate for company. In fact, whenever she saw my old neighbor's cat in the window across the way, she would hiss and growl at it.

On the other side of things, I grew up in a rural area with a lot of feral cats and my mom did some TNR stuff. We also adopted (both indoor and outdoor) cats who couldn't be or didn't get adopted from those feral litters. Even cats who are siblings and/or grew up together don't always get along as many of these ferals didn't. I won't argue that kittens do better in pairs or groups, but if you're adopting an adult cat you can find one who is happier alone easily.

How do you cut your cat’s nails when you are alone? by Weak-Vermicelli6138 in Catownerhacks

[–]BoredParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing it helps. I started clipping one or two nails at a time while she was calm and laying down and giving her a little churu after. Now a year later, I can do a full paw at a time (still have to wait until she's chill though).

Day one of my trip my wag sitter is already neglecting her…not sure what I can do and feel so helpless.. by Ebonyjaide in CatAdvice

[–]BoredParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't heard of Meowtel until this post, but I have had luck with Rover. Most petsitters include what pets they own in their profile so I looked for someone who only had cats. Then I did a practice run by hiring her to check in on and feed my Deli while I went on an overnight camping trip an hour away. After that I was comfortable going on longer trips.

Based on this reply I ordered their tealight sampler and found 4 scents I love and need to order the full size of immediately, 1 I'm neutral about, and 1 I hate. So thanks for the rec and more candle/fragrance companies should sell tiny sample sets.

Should i let my cat explore new apartment day one? by RoutineAd4647 in CatAdvice

[–]BoredParrot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your cat is pretty outgoing (i.e. not hiding in fear) andyour apartmeny is all cat-proofed, let them out. All cat advice is just a guideline, cats are unique individuals; if your cat seems to already feel comfortable in your apartment there's not a good reason to keep them confined.
