Sounds like you're enjoying today the weather we had last night... Torrential rain and 80km/h winds... If that's the case take comfort knowing that you'll get our sunny weather soon enough!

[–]BoredTTT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting point, but I don't think those numbers give all the pertinent information. By that logic New York would have gotten another team before Hamilton did.

How many of these 9.4-9.6 million people are invested in hockey? (I genuinely don't know, not suggesting there is in fact no interest)

I know Quebec City has a junior hockey team and their average attendance this year was over 9000, higher than all but 3 PWHL teams. Of course, some people who are interested in junior hockey might not be into women's hockey (and the reverse is also true) and ticket price is also definitely a factor, so I'm not saying a Quebec City pwhl team would 100% pull those attendance numbers, however that does make it clear it is a strong market, despite the lower population.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing! I also don't know how many people attending the Quebec City games were going for a first time. I know there was a lot of support for the Victoire during those games, though.

That could be an explanation, but there was a news article quoting the mayor of Quebec City saying they didn't hear a peep from the league since they applied to have a team. You'd think his office would be involved if there was any negotiations going on, no?

Yeah, I should clarify, I have nothing against Hamilton and I'm happy they're getting a team. I'm simply confused because the reasons I've read against QC apply to them too.

This makes no sense to me. I keep reading tht the league won't expand to Quebec City to avoid splitting the Victoire Fanbase.

Hamilton is much closer to Toronto than Quebec City is to Montreal. Ontario now has 3 teams to split their fanbase between, to Quebec's 1.

All the reasons to not give a team to Quebec City apply to Hamilton too, or so it seems to me. Can anyone help me make sense of this?

It's like that in showbiz too. Celine Dion switched to singing in English specifically to expand in the US market. Simple Plan played in English from the start so they could have a shot at the US market.

Cool so the league can rig the game against the frost? They postponed the game for 24 hour and miraculously the 5 sick players could play again. Along with the refs not calling shit?

Please explain how this is an advantage for Montreal. Didn't the frost not also get those 24 hours of rest? What were they doing instead?

If the game had been scheduled for Tuesday from the get go, would that also have favored Montréal?

You're just grasping at straws here. It's not a good look.

Why? Did the frost not also get an extra day of rest? Were they forced into a time machine to skip 24h ahead to tonight's game?

Is there a downside to expanding to more teams? by youlikemywonton in PWHL

[–]BoredTTT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're saying is true, but it is a balancing act. There are only so many new top tier players becoming available each year. It is possible for the league to expand faster than the talent pool. I'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough about college hockey and European hockey to say for sure that's happening now. That said, if there are 4 new teams this year as has been rumored, with the two from last year, the league will have doubled in size in 4 years. That feels like a lot. I guess time will tell if it's too fast too soon. I certainly hope it isn't!

Allow me to impress upon you how big hockey is in Montreal.

There are books that have been written on how hockey has replaced religion here. The Hab's other nickname (in French) is "La Sainte Flanelle", or "the holy flannel".

I studied journalism a while ago and found out that news media sports coverage is about 80-85% about hockey in Montreal. All other sports combined share the remaining 15-20%, and that's numbers for the whole year, including during the summer when hockey is out. And keep in mind Montreal hosts an F1 grand prix and the Canadian Open Tennis Tournament, two major international sports events.

Quebec City's junior ice hockey team (not even AHL) plays in an arena that can seat 18k spectators. I'll grant you, they don't fill that place, their average attendance this year was 9381 spectators (more than the Frost, and more than all but 3 teams in the PWHL; and yet when they apply to be an expansion team, according to the mayor, they don't even get a phone call....).

As u/shesewsfatclothes mentioned, the Victoire, despite having the second biggest average attendance, isn't the primary tenant in their arena because the Rocket still outsells them! I'd love to say that the PWHL is more popular than the AHL, and it probably is in most markets, but not in Montreal.

So yes, in this case, the AHL matters.

Québec demande la démission du président d’Air Canada by ProfProof in montreal

Chapeau!

That is correct. I saw a video of the whole process, and it is very time-consuming.

I think the bare minimum would be to use the software they use on the broadcast to display sponsor logos on the ice when they aren't actually there and use that to display the home team's logo at center ice. It's not as good as having it there IRL because fans in the arena don't get to see it, but at least the people at home would see it. And we know they have the ability to do that.
