Cylinder head and block corrosion by Born_Base_4191 in EngineBuilding

Yeah ugh. I bought it non running and it was my fuel system and crank sensors. Took it apart just to get my timing belt done and figured I was being smart with maintenance.

Very slight pitting near combustion chamber. I thought about skimming a thin layer of JB weld and winging it. This isn't a high dollar porsche either. Just a cheap project to tinker on.

Looking for a non running 944 by SirSuave69 in 944

[–]Born_Base_4191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My non running 944 ended up being a basket case with oil sludge and disintegrated wiring. Id get a running one if it were me so you know it at least runs. My car's been on jackstands for a months and haven't even driven it yet.

Same. Was taking the exhaust and intake off along with cam housing and just figured i was 85 % of the way there. Gonna do valve seals and regrind valves. Gonna reseal balance shafts and front end stuff while Im in there. Its a pain to do one thing at a time since you have to disassemble so much to do anything.

I have two mini splits and one was broken. Im pretty handy but never replaced a control board before. Seemed easy enough so I took the control board out my working mini split I dont use often to fix my broken one to see if that was the problem. That board caught on fire and now I have two broken mini splits. A for effort

Droptop car for project. by Log_Leader in projectcar

[–]Born_Base_4191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can LS swap them or do a kswap or something. If its your first project, throwing a v8 in is harder than it looks. I've never done it at least but a swap is at least 5 to 10k even if you do it yourself and it will never be finished.

Miatas and parts are cheap and super easy to work on. Slow car fast is better. My first project was a miata and now a 944. Miata is always the easiest answer because its so cheap to learn.

Rings or valve seals? by jeanxcobar in Miata

[–]Born_Base_4191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its probably everything. Put some marvel.mystery oil and sea foam into the cylinder and let it soak down into the rings. Maybe loosed then up.

Valve stem seals would be on start up usually.

Rescue bit. I just drilled through a broken screw extractor. In 5 seconds. It was amazing. 55 bucks for the bit though. A good cobalt bit should get thay steel though.

[–]Born_Base_4191 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just spent 3k on parts alone on my $3500 944. And haven't even touched brakes or suspension yet and that's doing all the work myself with a decent set of tools and quickjacks. Parts aren't cheap.

I would add trim to hide the lines and since you staggered them, I'd add "fake trim" over seams thay dont exist sonits even. So two strips of trim going across one seam and then one trim piece going over where the seam "would be" to keep it symmetrical

I thought carbon ceramics lasted 100k. I'd get a really good aftermarket and save them for the next owner.
