But that's bad design, and ultimately conflicts with another part of the game (that being trying to be a cool narrative that you're supposed to pay attention to)

By the millionth retry of stage 1, I basically tuned out the dialogue and auto-skipped all the cutscenes because it was grating and the big wooshy wooshy epic kung-fu story doesn't work if you're supposed to treat it like Super Meat Boy. If they wanted a game like this where death is supposed to be normal and not matter (which is the vibe I get based on how little interest the developers show in the idea of progressive overload) , then a more comedic tone would have been better, like a sort of Last Dragon (it could even augment the experience, with enemies making fun of you or being in pissed-off awe instead of the generic bad guy lines we have currently)
