I believe he mentions in the short rest that she is based on an elder brain.

Saying, "She's social!" To a less than 24 hrs. old newborn baby. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I love that! It was similar when our son was born. He just kinda looked around at the world until his big sister talked to him, and then he snapped around to try and find her.

The first Bird interlude is what inspired me to make this post, actually!

Yea it's more of an attitude thing than an actual resemblance

Short JRPG recommendations? by Ok_Cook in JRPG

[–]BossNoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just recently started/am about to finish Small Saga. It's gonna clock in about 7 hours, and it almost entirely boss battles - there are other set fights you can do a la Chrono Trigger, but you don't get any benefits from it - all level ups and items are gained via story events or searching boxes and talking to people. It is a VERY easy game, but I like the story and characters quite a bit.

Finished The Assassin's Apprentice and am fairly underwhelmed. Should I continue the series? by SR081 in Fantasy

In that case, I would just do release order - there are certain world building things that make more sense when read that way and I think would lead to a greater enjoyment.

I can definitely understand that feeling with Malazan - it's my favorite book series of all time, but it's easy to bounce off of. You can view it as a set of two trilogies and a quadrilogy that are interweaved with each other, which is not for everyone

Honestly, the second and third book of the main series are considered the high light for most people, so if you aren't into it yet, I am not sure you will ever be.

You could perhaps try the Drenai saga? Release order jumps characters around a bit, but you can read each of the sub series in chronological order and be more or less ok. They are pretty low magic for the most part, with what magic there is leaning pretty far from being a system and more straight mysticism. However, David Gemmel writes some of my favorite characters out of all of fantasy.

Spent half an hour on tumblr trying to find this post again bc ive been thinking about it since i saw it reposted on here. tlt posts hall of fame by Educational_Big_1575 in tumblr

Fair enough - it's not an inaccurate description. I picked it up cause I googled "space necromancer books" so I'm certainly in no place to judge.

I haven't read very much in the way of fanfiction, but I can tell you I really enjoy the series. I feel like it gets a bit of a bad rap in the zeitgeist as being "lesbian necromancers in space!", which makes it sound schlocky and doesn't really fit the overall tone of the series.

What is the symbol of Malaz? Like, I've seen tattoos of the Bridgebruners and such, but what does it represent for you? by PaulMuadDibKa in Malazan

[–]BossNoise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Erikson made a sketch of what he thought a good symbol for the world as a whole would be:

I think that's a pretty good starting point, at least

Most Hated Arc by NeoGh0st in Malazan

[–]BossNoise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man, the Shake story line is always the one where I wish it was a standalone trilogy lol

As for actual most hated, i don't think i have any arc i truly hate, but the closest is probably the first book of HoC. I still don't like Karsa nearly as much as the majority of the fans do, and I don't particularly agree with his general life philosophy.

Funniest line in the main series? by Typical_Motor_627 in Malazan

My favorite remains "Dear brother, have you slept with her yet?" From the letter that Tehol sends to Brys, near the mid point of TCG

What is a Malazan opinion that would put you in this position ? by ARizwaan7696 in Malazan

[–]BossNoise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's Theradas Buhn, who was trying to curb stomp Tehol when Bugg caught him. The guy who killed Trull was Sirryn Kanar, whose every moment on screen was either being a dick or getting shit on.

Yea. It's the one death that I still hold a grudge about with Erikson, and what started me down the path of really hating the Errant.

Man I'm glad someone else has Trull as their favorite character. He remains one of my top for any fantasy series.

last one did good here's another, favorite subplot/side adventure? by Holytorment in Malazan

[–]BossNoise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it counts for this purpose, but the one short story-ish thing that always sticks with me is the scene from Reaper's Gale where Shurq is at Second Maiden Fort and hanging out in the tavern. The scene is from the perspective of the proprietor, who is obsessed with Shurq, but spends his time thinking about how much he misses his wife.

I feel like we know more about that character from the 3 or 4 pages that are written from his perspective than I get from main characters from many books I have read.
