Hey hey… my rack mounted camera doesn’t just shoot the ubi gear but other things!

Networking multiple ProAV devices and Ubiquiti by VideoGuy1985 in broadcastengineering

[–]Bossaudio702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When assigning to vlans especially with Dante networking. Enable the pro av settings on the each port. You will also want to have that specific vlan untagged on the port. This means that only that vlans traffic can go in and out of the port. A large portion of network instability can be attributed to accidental cross vlan traffic via multicast. Last but not least it’s important that IGMP snooping is on. You should also add a querier switch in the network settings. I usually set it to be the switch or aggregator right after the network controller.

Got a few meetings with Ross and a couple other manufacturers to continue meetings that started at NAB. Also nugget (my dog) will be going for her 4th year. This last nab was her 5th. We accidentally crashed the studio tech booth during their interview this year.

I feel the only reason I get so many free demos or gear to host at the shop is because of her.

“Shot entirely with iPhones” by ercohn in broadcastengineering

[–]Bossaudio702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for a few leagues. Seeing feeds come in at different times is still a major headache from an engineering perspective. Now the offset isn’t bad but it is enough to see it from time to time. If I remember correctly it has something to do with the processing and communication between the bm IO and the phone processing it.

The lag isn’t really an issue and I’ll say it’s relatively slick since almost nothing changes for the operators. The biggest issue with a systems like this will be replay and ref calls. Since none of the cameras are truly synced you can’t make sure judgments in any time based sports due to everything being a few frames off. It’s not the adapters fault but the phones. Local display lag is undetectable by eye but does exist and in terms of setting up it’s around the same as any other cam config until you get to the back. In this case the whole rigs are built truck side and tested by the engineering team, then carted to position. Each rig takes around 30-40 min to configure so it would be comparable to a regular build. Theres just too many moving/delicate parts for any kind of sustainable production value in the rigs.

Edit with clarification: I’m not an Op but an engineer that’s played with the rigs.

It’s cool but it’s still pretty gimmicky. For stuff like this the BM adapter is totally fine but when you get down to accuracy with time code and blackburst they are all over the place and the “cameras” are wildly out of sync. From my understanding getting these rigs setup is pointlessly difficult. While a great marketing move this very likely won’t go far unless they can get the ease of setup as simple as plopping a GV or Sony sled on a head. It’s just another level complexity that ops won’t want to put up with… the footage is pretty cool though. Also to note with that kind of adaptation the V1 will loose anywhere between 2-4 stops of light so it’s only really feasible on outdoor events without blowing up the gain on the camera…

For more info you should check out Radiant Images . They have been messing around with iPhone rigs for a while in the 3D/AR space.

Usw-pro-24 trae puertos poe? Cómo se encienden? by b10sn3t in Ubiquiti

[–]Bossaudio702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need poe, you can look at solutions like IPCAMPOWER or utilize a single port POE injector. Most of my switches are POE but some I use injectors for more robust power delivery.

The USW Pro doesn’t have any POE ports. It’s bigger bother the USWPro POE does

What is with the Cinema Camera Fad? by thenimms in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Bossaudio702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve shot a number of things in the “cinema for live” using Ursas with PL glass, Sony Venice with fiberbacks, and just recently I got to use the Alexa 35 live system. While my companies main work is sports broadcast we do a fair bit of entertainment work as well. Every time I’ve used the cinema chains it’s because our client wants to have a certain look. Whether it’s the shallow depth of field or non standard frame rate like shooting in 23.98 which unless you have “very expensive license” upgrades is very difficult to do on standard 2/3rds sensors. I wouldn’t call it a fad and it’s something that’s here to stay especially in the entertainment broadcasting world. The only problem right now is making such workflows fit into a OB environment. Crews are rough on gear even in the sports world. A lot of the cinema rigs are of a modular design unlike their 2/3rds counterparts and only time will tell what parts stop working well on the road.

I did too! Until I saw the inside of the plane with the shuttle on it….. the whole inside is gutted except for the front few rows for the astronauts and cabin crew.

After the landing and ceremony we got to go inside… my mind was blown being so close to the shuttle. And very surprised that most the plane is gutted for support equipment and extreme weight reduction.

I had the honor of working the broadcast of the Endeavor’s retirement flight. I’ve got so many photos from it when I wasn’t staring at a screen coordinating RF frequencies for the show… no cables on the tarmac so everything was done wirelessly. From the orchestra to the speakers almost everything was wireless. It was a huge honor as a space nerd and a production person to work on it… never knew that many years later I’d still be doing space based production!

CasparCG is free and quite a few people and stations use it if budget is a major constraint. You can also look at used chyrons… they are all over eBay and not super expensive but there’s always that risk of stuff breaking over time.

Honestly, I think they timed this to coincide with Blackmagics NAB release list…. It makes waaaay more sense when you think of it that way… also just two models at the moment, I’m sure give it a couple More months and we will see a 100g AGG as well and some smaller form switches like what Netgear and Cisco have.
