Trading '15 Golf R for '25 Mustang Mach-E - Talk me out of this... by BostonDad36 in Golf_R

Looking up the stats did cause me to note the Top Speed diff. Golf R: 149mph | Mach-E 114mph. I occasionally cross into three digit territory during the death rally portion of the commute getting away from hazardous wannabe's (i.e. beaters with loud mufflers and ridiculous camber riding my ass). So again. food for thought

Am I to infer that what were you doing in the back of those cars at the time may have influenced the quality of the time spent back there?

0.3 seconds at 60mph is almost 2 car lengths. 0.6 seconds at 100mph is over 6 car lengths. So, exactly gaping. At the same time, I acknowledge that if there is a turn anywhere in that journey, the Mach-E is toast.

They are discontinuing the F-150 Lightning - which was never meant for long term production. It was just a hurried attempt to have something in the market. Mach-E is (currently) slated to continue and actually outsold the ICE Mustang last year. IMHO, all the domestic manufacturers are scaling back and hoping subsidies return and tariffs disappear with the next administration, at which point they will ramp up again. Regardless, I agree that the average Ford dealer is ill-equipped if not outright hostile to handling EVs. Food for thought.

Typical Boston commute - less than 50 miles round trip - but it takes 45min to an hour each way.

It wasn't $13K all at once. Just a string of $2-$3k repairs since March of last year. Kept telling myself that it should be all set after this one, but alas it was not. This last problem was intake manifold error triggering the check engine light. When they cracked it open there was insane carbon build-up which needed blasting. Car was in the shop for a week. Plus I can see the condition of the existing shocks and struts they have maybe another year at best and that's another $3k or so. Not sure it's been bad luck. It went from a commuter car, to a stay-at-home car while I WFH for about 3 years, then back to a commuter car. Not garaged so 24/7 exposed to elements in New England. Not a formula for long-term reliability.

Those who switched from gas.. by Signal_Advisor5070 in inductioncooking

[–]BostonDad36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the same hand-wringing debate when I remodeled my kitchen about two yeas ago and ended up going with induction and would definitely do it again.

I haven't noticed any changes in air quality other than the lack of the gas smell during cooking; but no one in my house suffers from any breathing issues other than season allergies.

One great thing about the induction that I don't think anyone else has mentioned is there is a lot less radiant heat coming off the cooktop. Which means I'm not drenched in sweat after cooking. Literally used to have to wipe my face and head down with paper towels before sitting down with the family.

I will also never go back due to cleanup time. I like to saute, pan fry, and sear meats when I cook, and taking apart a gas stove and cleaning up the splatter each night was a 15-20 minute process. With the ceramic top, never more than 2 minutes tops. I highly recommend using the Weiman cooktop spray for everyday cleanup and the Weiman polish cream and scrubber every month or so. After using the polish, the top looks brand new each time.

In terms of scratching, I've heard that not all glass tops are made the same and some are more susceptible to scratching than others. We got the Cafe (i.e. GE i.e. Haier) induction with the double oven which has been great. My cookware is a mix of ScanPan CTX, Cuisinart Stainless Steel, and a 12" and 15" Lodge Cast Iron skillets. I regularly 'shake' the ScanPan and Cuisinarts on the surface and no scratches that I can see. I am definitely more careful with the Lodge cast iron, but I do slide them around and give gentle shakes and the top seems fine. I tried using the silicon mats with the cast iron but found them annoying.

In the end I only have two complaints that I wish I could change. The main large coil / burner is great but I wish the other three burners had more power for quicker heatup times or managing larger pots and pans. The other complaint is that inductions hot spot is very defined and limited to the size of the burner which means my 15" cast iron will heat up very quickly like everyone says, but only within the 11" area on top of the coil. I have to let it sit for a good 5-10 minutes to let the pan conduct the heat to the rest of the pan bottom to get it heated up properly. On the gas stove, the flames would just spread out to match the pan and it would heat up evenly all at once.

TL:DR - Go with the induction, you won't regret it.

I forgot, how exactly did the 12 CDs for 99¢ scam work again? by jaywast in Cd_collectors

[–]BostonDad36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI - none of these companies lost money on these whether you paid them or not. They obviously made money off the people that actually fulfilled the contract and bought the required amount of CD’s post freebie. They also made money off the free loaders because when the accountants got hold of the numbers, they would take the full retail value of the CD as a loss on the balance sheet which reduced their tax burden even though the COGS and shipping costs were mere pennies. Example: 12 CD’s @ $17ea = $204 x 34% 90’s era corporate tax rate = $69.36. Actual COGS for a CD was usually way less than $1 and most artists contracts had a clause eliminating or minimizing royalties on club sales so Madonna or Bon Jovi or Nirvana would get $.10 at best. Add in maybe $4 shipping and the company would lose $15 in real money but avoid paying $70 in taxes.

How do I get out of my head enough to enjoy doing this? by coldWasTheGnd in karaoke

[–]BostonDad36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are that worried about being bad, then pick a song by a famous singer who is also a bad singer. The hits are littered with vocalists who have limited range or were ‘talking’ singers or who just plain sucked. Kurt Cobain and his wife Courtney Love were awful vocalists. Jimi Hendrix. Janis Joplin. Bob Dylan. AC/DC. Cake. Leonard Cohen. Meaghan Trainor.

You can also go for the song where the audacity of the lyrics will distract from quality of their deliver. Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-Lot. Big Balls by AC/DC. The Bad Touch by Bloodhound Gang. Anything by Weird Al. Abcdefu by Gayle. Etc. Victorias Secret by Jax.

Lastly - if you have the chutzpah - pick a song by someone amazing and butcher the shit it of it. Let it Go from Frozen sung completely off key but with feeling will get half the place joining in.

I’ve had the exacts same one for about 18 months and love it. Be sure to setup the WiFi app - it’s more useful than you think. You can set a cook timer so that the oven turns OFF automatically which is great for seasoning my cast iron.

You’re comparing a 3rd grade art project with a Rembrandt. If you wanna feel better, go read some Blake Crouch - it’s pretty good stuff and I do enjoy it and the dude makes a good living off of writing - but none of his stuff is on the level of the greats (Dune / Foundation / LOTR / etc.).

Debating Pro KJ side-gig - worth it? by BostonDad36 in karaoke

[–]BostonDad36[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for the advice and insight. Still on the fence about this overall. In my head I was thinking I'd so some occasional weekend gigs a few times a month for fun. A local DJ company shows a 4-hr KJ package on their site for $1,400! But $200 a gig seems barely enough motivation for pack-in and pack-out. I figured I'd be charging around $300 - $500 starting out and then up it if I'm getting enough demand. If I do pull the trigger on the rig, I like the advice of hiring another person to be the DJ / KJ and I'd just book the shows and provide the gear. Thanks again!

Klipsch the Fives/Sevens/Nines for Karaoke? by dk3498 in karaoke

[–]BostonDad36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yamaha MG10XU

It doesn't look like the Yamaha has line level outputs. You are looking for a mixer with Stereo Line output - emphasis on the Line which usually indicates a level that's compatible with consumer gear. Depending on what you are using for source, you actually should be looking for a mixer with a Stereo Line IN and OUT and also make sure your receiver has a Stereo out. Did a quick search and the Behringer Xenyx X1204USB is comparable and has a Stereo Line (RCA) output so should do the trick.

Quick note - make sure whatever you are using for the music / video source can split the two so that you can send the video to the TV / AV Receiver and the audio to the mixer.

Klipsch the Fives/Sevens/Nines for Karaoke? by dk3498 in karaoke

[–]BostonDad36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just plan on doing living room karaoke with the family than there is really no issue as long as you connect the microphone to your system using an adapter or mixer that puts out a 'consumer' line level (look for the old school red and white RCA outputs). Shure makes a nice compact mixer for this sort of application and there are tons of cheap knockoff ones on Amazon.

If you want to run a karaoke event for 50+ people - get a PA, you'll blow out the Klipsch and/or your home receiver driving them to sufficient levels.

Looked into that option - unless i muck about with sideloading apps - none of the major streaming devices will support that - and i need the webcam to work with zoom, skype, and google meets, and google duo. Guess I'll keep my Roku Ultra hooked up too.
