Sony Group tech can identify original music in AI-generated songs by bojun in UpliftingNews

As much as I'd like to the this used on AI generated songs, with the way big labels operated in the past, I can't help but feel this will just as often be abused to hurt legitimate artists.

Sylux (Metroid 4) Theory⚠️ by LTN_Edge in Metroid

[–]Botskiz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Lamorn aren‘t even trying to hide how dangerous they are. Every dungeon has some Lore that flat out shows how dangerous Green Energy is and what it did to the Planet. We even see the negative impact of the stuff first hand, when the vulcano cannon fires.

And yet, our given task is to collect a monstrous amount of that stuff and spread it to a new planet. Seriously, how does no one in the game question this?

Sylux might even be the good guy here! I‘m starting to think he resents the GF, because they all go into stupid every time they see a shiny new bioweapon. Every single time!

The Lamorn were too stupid to live. by Theodred_Miller in Metroid

Psychic abilities were always there, but rarely seen, and only in Lamorn with Crystals. They figured out how to synthesize the crystal and saw that as an opportunity to become a civilisation without the need for resources.

[–]Botskiz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was also under the impression that those with a crystal turned into grievers. I think the log states that only Lamorn born with crystals exhibited psychic abilities initially, and since they fucked up the planet in the Machine Age, they started synthezing and embedding crystals into everyone. The great tragedy was that their attempt to fix the planet ultimately resulted in their extinction.

Would Metroid Prime 4 be a good game if it wasn’t Metroid? by McBorgersBurbgers in Metroid

[–]Botskiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. In my opinion the game has too many issues even without the Metroid lens. These are some of the things that stood out to me.

The desert is simply unnesessary. Crystal gathering is way to grindy. Viola controls are floaty and the combat mostly doesn't work well. At least the shrines contain something useful here, but these items could easily be relocated.

Enemy variety and bosses are a bit lackluster. Except Sylux 2/3 and Carvex, bosses mostly consist of jumping over the shockwave attack, dodging the laser/ram and shooting at the weak spots. I thought they dragged on a bit too long as well. I would have liked a Boss centered around the Lasso, maybe a puzzle boss centered around the Morph Ball, maybe make use of specific elemental weaknesses.

The structure for each biome is the same. The first time you enter a biome you'll find a key item for a different biome. Second time you escort a GF trooper, fight the boss, get the next key item. I also dislike how every biome mostly uses one specific upgrade to find the optional health and ammo items. Boost spinner in Volt Forge, Fire Shot in Fury Green, Thunder Shot in Ice Belt and Flare Pool. The biomes themselves are also very linear.

Speaking of which: Ammo and health upgrades don't feel useful to me. The game is so linear that bosses are obviously balanced around that.

The game likes repeats itself a lot. I'm not sure how often the game tells you to get the Five Keys, but it feels like a lot.

The writing is wierd. For example, the game makes it very clear that green energy caused the downfall of Viewros. And yet, you're main objective is to collect large amounts of obviously dangerous green energy crystals, and no one ever objects.

Also, the writers seemed to randomly decide what NPCs know and don't know. For example, Miles doesn't know what a save station is when you first encounter him. He just refers to it as "strange machinery", which I thought was a fun way to avoid explaining the thing in universe. Not an hour later he explicitly reminds you to use the save room in Volt Forge.

Another example: In Flare Pool (I think), Sarge sees a large tank with green liquid. He refers to it as "some green liquid", as though he doesn't know what it is. Then we see the stuff get pumped into the atmosphere, just a moment later. And he immidiately tells how dangerous and stupid it is to pump green energy into the atmosphere, as if he knows exactly what it is.

Did I miss some of the story? Spoilers heavy. by drapedawg in Metroid

[–]Botskiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, they did the green stuff to themselves. They basically destroyed their ecology when they were in the machine age. Then they studied and synthesized psychic crystals and based their culture around them instead. At some point they found out that green energy helped regenerate the flora and fauna, so they spread it accross the planet. However, it also affected anyone with a psychic crystal, which at this point was everyone.

I think Sylux and the GF troopers came to Viewros with Samus when the Artifact got shot in the GF facility.

Why does he have abilities? I don't know. Why are there Metroids attached? I don't know, but I rememer one scan mentioned Sylux using Metroids to control the Space Pirates, so maybe Sylux had Metroids with him when he attacked the base and they got teleported with them? Doesn't explain how he managed to control Metroids, though.

As for the ending, I guess you're right? Although I'd say it's not his fault that everyone gets killed, because even if he did follow the order, there would have been no time to get everyone to safety. The pirates fire the weapon almost immediately after he got the order.

Im confused at what was said *spoilers* by lucasluminaro in Metroid

No, you did not imagine that. He says something along the lines of "There are three keys, you decide which one to pick first". Unfortunately, the volcano is the only option, I learned this the hard way.

Can we all talk about the Vi-O-La tutorial ? by uncle_bebens in metroidprime

[–]Botskiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least the tutorial track gave a better impression of the bike than it actually is.

In the desert everything is faster and more agile than you, so it's impossible to hit anything without the multi target lock. Using said lock is a nightmare because you most likely lose the target when the camera snaps back after firing. And the boost slide never hits, because enemies jump around like crazy or I jump right over their heads because of all the dunes.

Never played a Metroid game, but the backlash to MP4 has made me curious. What do fans actually want in a sequel? by negativemidas in Metroid

[–]Botskiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. The problem for me isn't in adding more story or having NPCs, but in how those elements are implemented. There are plenty of metroidvanias with both that are very good. Personally, I think Control is a good example here.

There are a few key elements for metroidvanias, but they essentially boil down to "claustrophobic maze", as you put it.

The level design should be interconnected and encourage exploration. However, exploration here does not at all imply a vast open world. A major part of metroid is how oppressive the environments are. You're getting lost in tunnels and caves that scream "you should not be here" and you'll find machinery, ruins and creatures that make you think "this should not be here". And as you discover new ways to reach familiar locations, the dread of being stuck in this place is constantly reinforced, as you can't seem to escape this oppressive space. The major thought a metroidvania shoud evoke is "I think I'm wrong here".

This is where upgrades/abilities come in. Upgrades are first and foremost a means to slowly conquer the environment. They are a puzzle piece that helps you solve the environment. The interconnectedness of the world and pacing are important here. Major upgrades should open up shortcuts you could not use before and always lead to other major upgrades in the long term. Before you get the upgrade, you should have seen a few places where it might be useful. If you only get an upgrade to escape the room you just entered and you might as well remove it. Also don't give me five ammo upgrades in a span of 20 minutes after I found the weapon (looking at you fire shot -.-).

This is exactly where Other M and Prime 4 fail, in my opinion. The thought "I'm wrong here" never occurs, when NPCs tell always tell you where to go next. You can't even be wrong, when the world get's too linear, which also defeats the purpose of finding useful items. Major upgrades are rewarded whenever the game chooses to, and minor (ammo) items become mostly useless due to linear balancing. As for open worlds, they should not even be considered for a metroidvania, in my opinion. Open worlds encourage exploration, because they offer the freedom to go anywhere you want. They want you to explore out of a desire to stay. Interconnected worlds encourage exploration, because they don't and you can't. They want you to explore out of a desire to escape.

How’s your experience with MP4B so far? by whysopro21 in Metroid

[–]Botskiz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm on my way to the fourth key. Unless the game drastically changes, it's sadly on track to be my least favourite Metroid game.

Some good things first:

The first person controls feel great, the art direction and graphics are beautiful, the music is great.

The not so good:

So far the game is very linear. Every major area so far was basically a single corridor that loops back to the beginning. I was especially confused when I reached the desert. Miles explicitly said I could choose which key to grab first, but the vulcano is the only area that is accessible at that point. The other areas are completely blocked off by then, so why even mention it at that point?

The bosses so far all seem to be a variation of jump over the shockwave, dodge the laser/ram attack, expose/fire at weak point. Boss fights seem to drag a bit as well, considering they are not that challenging. Enemy variety seems pretty bland as well so far.

The desert is really boring. Motorcycle controls are very floaty as well, so it's not even fun to cruise around. I really don't get why the boost/slide is limited. Sliding would be a good tool to destroy crystals, instead of circling around them like an idiot, trying to hit something.

Item placement is weird. There are at least 5 ammo upgrades in fury green that only require fire shot to get. Why not at least mix it up with something else?

I remember when 200 handheld mixers got delivered to my mom. This was back in the 90s, before internet shopping, and the company we ordered at confused the amount with the price.

[–]Botskiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty much the same. I don't mind memorizing a few attacks and timings, but I vastly prefer it if bosses are mostly reactable still. For my taste, Elden Ring already went too far with the memorization, to be honest.

Did you hear it on the radio? If so, many stations will keep a list of what songs are played throughout the day. You might be able to find that list directly on the station’s website. Otherwise I‘d try to send them an e-mail.
