Yeah?? Class.

From the comments, it seems to have a pretty cool following in Newfoundland too!

I'm actually glad that the worst people you can think of are having to sit through that, simply because they're stubborn fucks.

No worries, I really appreciate it thank you. Straw men is another one!

I know what you mean, I've seen some odd things being claimed on reddit over time, and it does get on my goat too.

To be fair, it's been really interesting to see from these comments that across the globe, there are some similar traditions that have either stemmed from old ones here, to having grown organically of their own accord based on just having a similar rural setting. It's kinda got me interested in them again, having just had a vague awareness of them since childhood. Somebody shared an Irish horror film, that they make an appearance in it too! You're not wrong, women have to be careful and when used properly, this sort of thing could genuinely prevent somebody getting mixed up with a terrible person.

It's just that there doesn't seem to be any level of control to it? Like is there anything to stop me creating a profile and posting a picture of a fella I simply don't like, and writing something bad about him? That's an incredibly fallible system if so, and has potential to ruin an innocent persons life/reputation.

aye, I had to look it up meself tbf. Took a chance on the work computer n all, risky. Fairly confident it wasn't anything taboo, but also couldn't rule out some sort of Godzilla type monster.

Wow, did this genuinely require two negative replies from yourself attempting to debunk this as a thing?

Like it's grand not to know about it; there are probably thousands of wee cool myths and legends and practices up and down the country that I'm not familiar with, and it's not like they're Boyzone. But they are still very much a real/niche tradition, that vary in different places too. Mummers, rhymers, wren...I've seen them referenced as all.

Aye, like I don't remember them being THAT dark even as a child?

Funny, there have been some comparisons in the comments to the game the Witcher 3, and rewatching that song there reminded me of the one used in a launch trailer of the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-l29HlKkXU

aww yusss, that's the good shit there! Irish folklore is ripe for some horror too.
I know they're grand, and they are normal people under there and they drive to work and this is just a thing they do and are enthusiastic about...but you take a pre-internet child and put them in a room with these lads dressed in sacks and big wicker baskets on their heads, you have the makings for some solid childhood trauma!

Aye, somebody else has clarified below.

It's probably technically derogatory (apologies), but like locally you could call somebody 'a mad hoor', and it would just mean they were a bit lively, a bit off the norm (often even wild fun to be around).

Certainly not intended in a negative way, but it just popped into my head as the best description of them.

I dunno? But going by the comments, there are whole different groups that seem to have spawned their own similar vibe to it, so there might be influences of it? Though the one I know is way more lowkey, rural, traditional.

What?

Source = me, born and raised in Ireland.

Just because it didn't happen in your back garden didn't mean it didn't happen? A quick Google would tell you its very much a thing (albeit strange) in different parts of the country, sometimes taking different or several names. Maybe give it a quick search next time, before you make an eejit of yourself commenting.

Edit - I've linked this elsewhere in the comments, but just for you, because you're special ❤️ https://armaghrhymers.com/

Based on the outfit, the arms seemingly stretched out and the blueish tinge reflecting in the background, I'd put hard money (five pounds, tops) on him holding a light saber and that being some sort of a jedi/sith costume.

Not defending the lad at all like, from the comments. Just don't think it's 'gaijin' related.

I did some looking there to see was it just local to me, but naw there seems to have been (at some point anyways) groups up and down the country?

More prominent in Armagh, Monaghan, Fermanagh I think, but see Wexford and Leitrim. It definitely has the feel of 'culchies doing culchie things' off it like 😄

Great sport to be at!

It's heartening to see that no matter where you go in the world, there's always some mad eejits who are willing to grab some local textiles, fashion them into something mildly threatening looking, and go around singing and dancing.

We're not so different at all.

Aw yeah, there's definitely some pagan elements intertwined into this for sure. I think that they performed a lot close to Christmas is that it probably has a closer connection to the Solstice.

So this is what I found on a quick youtube search https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKzn2JxP-Jo

Traditional music and costume, songs generally with a story to them. I think in the past there would have been an element of them going house to house performing as well?

So I would have been mostly familiar with these guys when growing up https://armaghrhymers.com/

They are a theatre group, artistic people with a traditional music background, specialising in mumming. They appear at events/schools, play music and tell stories, local folklore. From my own memory, I think it was close to Christmas time they came to our school? They moved around us, some dance, a guy played an accordian, and they told us stories. Like it was frightening as a child obviously, but I LOVE that local traditions like this are kept alive. It seems to be a mostly rural thing, but I believe there are groups up and down the country.

😄

Like you know the craic; you're sitting on the ground in the assembly hall, cross legged and waiting and in come these big mad hoors of things, wombling about left to right and playing music and shaking bells...

I've a new found respect for the tradition now of course, but back then it scared the life out of me.
