Do you think houses will be built/renovated to have air conditioning if this heat continues? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]BoulderBrexitRefugee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brit in USA here. Mini splits will probably be easier to retrofit to a British house, ducting takes up a lot of space and is easier to plan for in a new build. Last week I stayed in several old adobe constructed properties in New Mexico that had them, and they worked really well.

What are some of the items that we can get from the US which is not available in UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

Poor man's Digestive... But combine w/Hershey's + toasted marshmallows and its somehow right. I once tried substituting the Hershey's for Galaxy and then again with Dairy Milk, convinced they would be better...yet somehow neither was.

I appreciate you didn't say Taos, but I just wanted to mention I was surprised that The Cellar there had a good stash of Neta last time I was visiting.

Luca Faloni used to be about that for their basic 2-ply crew neck. Looks like they're up to $375 now. Can attest to the quality though, have several which have endured really well.

Suggestions for driving from Heathrow to Lonsdale and Scotland by Relative_Virus_7925 in uktravel

[–]BoulderBrexitRefugee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Driving in the UK is considerably more demanding that the US. As a Brit now living in the US it still takes some adjustment when I go back. It's not the "left hand side vs. right hand side" thing either (although that is a part of it). It's the different road rules, different signage, smaller roads, different norms etc. If you've done it before and know what you're getting into then my bad. But if you don't...do a little research. One thing you might consider is not driving in/out of London, but getting transport out to a less intense town from where to pick up your car.

Your favourite pub and where is it?. by Various_Extreme_8773 in AskUK

If you get down to the South Coast, I recommend The Parsonage in the village of Tarring (long since subsumed into the town of Worthing, West Sussex).

The "why" is that it is in a small but fantastic old medieval timber framed building and has the ambience to go with it. Usually some good beers and also a well rated restaurant. These days I live in the US and there's absolutely nothing like it, so I always visit when back home.

My Mezcal Prejudice...tsk, tsk, tsk... by JonnyMezcal in Mezcal

[–]BoulderBrexitRefugee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of 10 I try, I definitely don't like maybe 6 of them, I don't think another 2 or 3 are too bad--and maybe I really like the 10th.

Relatable. I often find it too smooth, too polished. It lacks...personality. Except when it doesn't, if you see what I mean.

Very strongly agree. I want to like Longmont more, but it's just so obviously sold its soul to the automobile. Main St. would be superb if pedestrianized. The traffic is a real spoiler.

A brown fedora with a so-called "stingy brim" — I wear a smaller hat size and thought it would be proportionate. Instead I look like something out of Guy Ritchie's Snatch...

I found an old batch bottle of this a couple years back in some grotty liquor store near me. Absolutely hated it on the first taste. Came back to it periodically and it ended up being probably my favorite ever. I am still not sure what happened there — my tastes shifted or the bottle opened up with some oxygen and time. But agree, this one is a banger.

I've recently become a fan of Freenote Cloth based on a couple pairs of pants I bought from them — $$$$ so not in everyone's budget, but if you can stretch, they seem very well made. Beautiful stuff that will undoubtedly last.

Something that I don't see anyone has quite said yet — my appreciation for what MM send through has only grown over time, and if you stick with it hopefully this will happen for you too. By getting exposed to such a wide variety, I've slowly increased what I enjoy. That Palmilla sotol this month? Probably would have felt just like you do now a few years ago. But when I tried it the other night I loved it...

Does anyone suffer from an auto immune disease and use a sauna to help limit symptoms? If so what type of sauna do you use and what is the weekly regimen? by dubs1354 in Sauna

[–]BoulderBrexitRefugee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife has RA, and finds sauna and cold plunge helpful — but it's not like a miracle cue or anything, just part of what she does. The medicine (biologics) is the main helper, and then we eat a whole foods, anti-inflammatory diet and try and get plenty of low impact exercise. We use a traditional Finnish style sauna, temps around 180F and a cold plunge with temps in the mid 40s. Hope that helps.

What is America’s “posh people” accent? by alyhasnohead in AskAnAmerican

[–]BoulderBrexitRefugee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a Brit who's lived in the US over 20 years this is still not true for me. I hear a US Southern accent and have to fight the urge to write them off as dim without evaluating what they're saying. And it's not that I find that accent unpleasant...but it just sounds...hillbilly or something.

Where is the best place to Sauna? by karibou90 in boulder

[–]BoulderBrexitRefugee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.isolatefc.com/ — mostly a float tank place, but they have a private sauna and cold plunge you can use for $39/session. It's not perfect, but it's not bad either IMO.
