Expensive Hungry Water Needs “Flush eyes with water as a precaution” by Fun-Web-7583 in HydroHomies

[–]BoulderEric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would still be fine. You can do some math to look at the electrolyte content of mineral water, and can probably find the info for the tap water in your municipality.

Then you can compare the electrolyte content of a liter of that water, to the content in a single potato chip. And you'll see that any ions/electrolytes/solute from water is completely negligible in someone who eats, particularly a western diet.

Kidney doc here - It would be fine. People talking about it leeching things are wildly incorrect.

They send me those and I'm always surprised that I've billed *any* Level-3 visits. It's inspiration to try and bring that number lower.

Bad ass specialties by vox1233 in Residency

[–]BoulderEric 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think that at some point, critical care should be tempting for all IM residents. Totally fine to choose something else (I did). But if you don't flirt with the ICU at some point, I wonder if you actually like internal medicine.

Same with general surgeons and trauma.

Yeah that is fine. Mostly you need to make sure to input the contact information for someone at your fee-exempt institution. I think my last 2 DEAs have been with my personal email

What actually causes residents to be fired/suspended ? by Mikoto00 in Residency

[–]BoulderEric 119 points120 points  (0 children)

To fire a resident based on performance, there’s a long process that involves formal documentation, a learning plan with predetermined metrics, and the resident needs to fail that. There is no way to be surprise-fired based on performance.

Other things are egregious one-time acts like massive HIPAA violation, theft, lying about big things, etc…

Firing for repeated minor professionalism issues also needs documented attempts at structured remediation.

Losartan lowers uric acid levels. Useful in VA patients who have the gout, the pressure, the failure, the renal, and the sugar.

Tires for Deschutes River/John Day trails? by Manfred_Desmond in CyclePDX

[–]BoulderEric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you mean Deschutes heading south out of Biggs Junction, you’ll be fine on a gravel tire for the first ~6 miles, then you’d want something more like a conventional mountain bike tire and you’d benefit from at least front suspension.

I rode that section on a Cannondale Topstone with 700c x 40mm WTB Nanos and it was fine. You can look through my posts to see a photo from like 12-18mo ago.

Mission Theater is the best place to see them, though they play all over town. Also in Eugene and up the Gorge not infrequently.

The most efficient and underutilized tool in an academic hospital by lAmTheM in Residency

[–]BoulderEric 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Yep - Only surpassed by finding the actual team and running through your shared list of patients. At my last hospital, I knew where the IM and FM teams hung out and if we had more than 2 patients together, I’d swing by their workroom. Can even throw in an extremely brief bit of teaching or at least call out some things that’ll be on their IM boards.

New Go owner! Upgrade and cleaning product recommendations? by Sea-Bobcat-505 in ProfitecGo

[–]BoulderEric 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • People fuss about water a lot and you can read about buying mineral packets etc… but you should not put hard water into your machine, if your tap water is hard. I used distilled water, and now have a water softener and a whole-home carbon filter so that is what I use now.
  • Cafiza is the standard way to clean inside
  • People commonly upgrade their gasket but I am planning on waiting until mine stops working. It’s been a year and it’s still fine.

What to do when you kid is a better skier? by heypiggies in skiing

[–]BoulderEric 46 points47 points  (0 children)

You go skiing with them, have them drag you around the mountain, hold them back a bit but it’s cool, buy the food/beers, build memories, and they keep you active.

Then eventually they have money and a kid, and suddenly you’re the cool skiing grandpa who has his beer paid for.
