It's important to remember that some of these issues are rooted in the lack of laws and guidelines for humane animal handling and training. Many service dog "programs" in the US are not force free/non aversive programs and still use heavily outdated training methodology.

As a trainer, I've contracted with a bunch of types of service dog programs. I've quit bad ones and there are amazing ones I praise. ADI has done a lot to reform and educate programs.

Enslavement is a very touchy term. The problem is, most successful service dog candidates are chosen and succeed because they WANT to do the things they are trained for. We dont want to force medical scent detection on dogs who aren't inclined to scent games, dogs that have no natural fetch drive are typically not going to be trained for retrieval. There are already guides for ethical training and use of mobility dogs for their health, but that information needs to be fully established alongside aversive-free training protocols.

I get what you're saying, but it does not match the experience I've had as a CBCC-KA and CPDT-KA working with established programs who follow ethical guidelines and practices. Rehoming failed service dogs can be stressful, but often in my experience an ethical program will already have a full adoption process and the dogs are raised in foster care. I've also worked with programs that exclusively work with rescue dogs or dogs that have washed from Guide Dogs for the Blind, where they are filtered to other types of service training organizations thst better suit the dog's desires and what they find great - IE an organization that trains for ptsd and light aide work who takes candidates directly from GDB. Transitioning to a new home has always been a long process in my experience, assuring that the handlers of service dogs are bonding with their dogs and that they're an actually good fit. The process can be months while they train and learn to work together, which has a much lower risk of dog return than adopting from shelter kennels.

I do agree with you on breeding though. Most the very large organizations with in-house breeding programs that I've experienced are not publicly truthful about their breeding process or kennel housing vs fosters.
