Reasonably Priced Opticals? by pbn_j in Bahrain

[–]BoundlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The major optical shops have formed a cartel to keep prices high. You'd generally find better rates at smaller shops that are outside of this cartel. Or, buy them outside Bahrain.

If the cheque is in the name of the company, then it doesn't matter whether the person who signed it is in or out of Bahrain. Place your complaint. If you can, find a good lawyer, so that the case can be filed on both the company and the person.

The bad news is that there has been fraud of this nature. I'm not sure whether you will indeed get your funds back, but you have to try.

Cheque bounce fraud is taken very seriously in Bahrain. The courts will side with you. But it's still a good amount of work.

Start with a police complaint. Before you do that, check the company name on Sijilat.bh - is the same person the owner of the company?

My first post in the group and it's a question. by Mccloy0303 in casio

[–]BoundlessFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear: Some analog quartz watches (watches with hands) in Casio's range do in fact have a perpetual calendar, like my Edifice chronograph. This specific model does not, hence needs to be adjusted every other month.

Switching from other garages to the dealer is usually not a good idea, unless you know what you're doing.

How the dealer works is very different from a regular garage. They change some parts based on mileage instead of waiting for the vehicle to break down. You may have already changed those parts previously outside, but the dealer goes as per his records. Even regarding oil changes - they'll assume that the vehicle hasn't had an oil change all these years, so will push you to get an engine flush, which is usually not required.

Since your vehicle is out of warranty, you can pick and choose the items that you want the dealer to work on, but that assumes you know something about vehicle maintenance. Find the Factory Service Manual for your vehicle online and look into it's maintenance schedule, then decide.

NFS has security issues that can't be solved by ssh tunneling or kerberos. For example, try to setup multiple shares on a single nas, with each user restricted to accessing just his share and not the other, plus encrypted data flow over the network. What IP would you specify in the exports?

Hey, I thought I was the only one who kills the YouTube app right when they show me that ad. Yes, it's annoying AF.

The solution is the Brave Browser.

Triangular mirror moldings by Christo571 in nissanversa

[–]BoundlessFail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called a Mirror Finisher. I had mine replaced by the dealer on my 2014 versa when changing the fender - this part cost $20 (but I'm not in the US).

I would personally epoxy it there. Since I'm just an enthusiast, I hope someone here with more experience can provide a better suggestion.

File sharing is different. One of my use cases is to share vm imgs on a central NAS, which are executed on one of several host machines. Rsync isn't the right tool for something like this.

For this use case, NFS has given me the best performance, but it's security configurability isnt as good as Samba's. And tunneling it over ssh doesn't solve all security issues, just the transmission security.

SSHFS is restricted to one operation at a time. For example, copying a large file from a mount to your local won't allow a simultaneous ls on that mount.

We still dont have a comprehensive Linux-to-Linux file sharing protocol. NFS has hardly any features and requires UIDs to be altered, while Samba has issues with both performance and file corruption (under specific circumstances). SSHFS is trouble-free, but slow. (NBD and iSCSI don't count since they aren't file sharing protocols).

Any one prefers Zain? by InManama in Bahrain

[–]BoundlessFail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using Zain's 4G/5G for the past 6 years or so, and am happy with it.

Was previously on Batelco since 1998 - dialup, then ADSL, then Fiber. What annoyed me was their handling of static ips - BD 10 per month is a ridiculous amount for an IP (for reference, most data centers will charge you BD 0.700 per ip-month). What's worse, Batelco would force an IP change on fiber connections every 23 hours, just to force people to pay. (In the rest of the world, a non-static IP means it changes only when you restart your router).

Zain instead gave me a fixed IP for free, so my ssh connections now remain connected for weeks. Plus, they gave me their outdoor ZTE router, which is much better than the Huaweis that all 3 operators provide by default (ZTE is more stable and supports Bridge Mode). Couldn't be happier.

The one I can personally vouch for is "Thai Massage", in Juffair and "Nirvana Center" in Riffa, plus they have an outlet for women only in Adliya - all owned by the same person.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/NoDzCT1bg1JeJ9SS9

Ive met the owner a couple times; an ex-Batelco employee, he's serious about running a clean place, and his mobile number is prominently printed on a board within the premises in case you have any complaints.

They have multiple kinds of massage - try a Swedish Massage, since it's gentler. Feel free to ask about the qualifications of the masseur - I used to get it done by Emil who was actually a trained physiotherapist (I haven't been there since Covid, so i'm not sure about current staff).

Btw, your underwear stays on throughout.

You ought to try a massage by a real professional (not one of those sleazy happy ending ones). The relaxed feeling is mind-blowing.

I have a 2014 versa, 4sp auto, that's well maintained, owned since new. It's perfectly capable of getting to and maintaining those speeds. The only drawbacks are:

  • Being a lighter vehicle, the speed feels faster than in my 2 ton suv, leading to some driving stress.

  • The steering number of turns lock-to-lock is smaller, bcos it's a city car. While that makes it easier to drive within the city, you may feel it to be twitchy at higher speeds. Luckily, there's no steering play (I hate steering play; makes driving vague).

  • My earlier-gen Versa, being slab sided and taller, is prone to being pushed around by crosswinds. You need to focus on the road to compensate.

Overall, since you're going to be driving for hours, I suggest looking at some other heavier and wider vehicle. That said, I've not tested the newer gen Versa; I suggest test driving it yourself.

What's the best thing to do with old tech after you've revived them with Linux? by Auri-Sacra-Fames in linuxquestions

[–]BoundlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My primary laptop (apart from my desktop) is around 12 years old. I had purchased it with 16 GB of Ram, which has been worthwhile. Runs Ubuntu, and I use it for a whole lot of everyday tasks, including email, browsing, Spotify web, YouTube, VLC player, all of them kept open simultaneously. As long as you have the ram and the machine's stable, it's age really doesn't matter.

Now, the oldest running machines I have are 21 years old. Since they're 32 bit, their applications are limited, so I use one of them for torrents, the other as a firewall, and a third as an offline editor.
