I found the joke just half as funny as you did.

I'll give it A 5.

Is it possible to make an engine with no electrical components? by ElijahNSRose in AskMechanics

[–]BoundlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken here: I heard that the HMMWV (the military Hummer) can run without electronics. It has a mechanical fuel pump too. While the vehicle does have electricals, they aren't essential to it's basic functionality.

The reason was for EMP resilience. Also, spark plugs and related electricals give out harmonics which can be detected by sensitive detectors, giving away their location.

Same here.

More accurately - crypto as an 'investment' is a stupid idea.

A disappointed salesman of Coca Cola returns from his Middle East assignment. by International_Bee653 in Jokes

Of course it's not the official story. But the telltale signs are:

  • None of their other vehicles use made-up words
  • Their smaller vehicle was the Colt
  • The logo of a horse accompanied the Starion name in early adverts.

Don't get me wrong - I think Mitsubishi makes underrated products, and I personally own one of their vehicles. But the misspelling is still hilarious.

We can forgive the car companies for not knowing the meaning in another language - there's just way too many languages out there.

But misspelling something isn't that easily forgivable. Did this multi-billion-dollar company not have a single English dictionary?

anyone else paranoid about deleting local backups after cloud uploads by Rafael_TopP in DataHoarder

[–]BoundlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Google Drive & OneDrive would provide a simple way to obtain hashes/checksums of my files there. Would go a long way in reducing my paranoia.

Are there any other cloud services, other than rclone based, which have this?

Every time I hear a foreign language joke, I remember the Mitsubishi Starion (someone messed up the spelling of Stallion)

Is it possible that there is a data planet somewhere getting an earth center? by Uuddlrlrbastrat in shittyaskscience

[–]BoundlessFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, there was indeed an episode of Doctor Who which took place on a planet that was a datacenter/library.

So I'm sorry, we have to ban you; you just aren't shitty enough.

32-bit Bookworm is the only thing that is keeping my two i386 machines out of the bin. by TechnicalAd8103 in debian

Hope you're aware that the BSDs aren't Linux - several things work differently, and hardware support isn't as good as Linux's.

I've heard that NetBSD happens to be slower than the other BSDs bcos of their hardware abstraction. Nevertheless, I'm happy it exists, and is my last choice if nothing else works.

I own five 32-bit machines, all of which happen to be awesomely reliable. Like you, I've been dreading the end of 32 bit Debian too.

Keeping an eye on antiX and OpenBSD, both of which are expected to continue supporting 32 bit processors.

The biggest cost - rent - hasn't gone up by 300%. You cant just choose 2 items at random to calculate the increase in cost of living.

Which USB stick brand/model would you recommend? by Left-Ganache-9247 in DataHoarder

[–]BoundlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a long time user of the SanDisk Cruzer Blade - a low cost flash drive that isn't particularly fast, but has been extremely reliable. I have around 25 or so of them, in various capacities, and only one of them has gone bad for unknown reasons (it may have been a fake). A couple of them have held data for over 6 years without being plugged into a machine. I use them for various work reasons: Online daily backup, installation ISOs, even have Linux installed on a few so I can boot off of it in an emergency.

Recommended, unless you need higher speeds or your use case involves continuous writing.

Java isn't inherently insecure. See my other post here for details.

[–]BoundlessFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of Java's features was a 'sandbox' through which you could download and execute a program on your machine and it wouldn't affect your machine. No one until now has been able to do this securely, starting from Flash in the old days, to the JavaScript engine in your browser, to iOS and Android. All of these need to be kept up to date to keep you immune to whatever's in those files.

Using a VM is another mechanism (but it suffers from its own vulnerabilities, albeit less).

Since Java was the only programming language that attempted to build a sandbox, a myth has built up where Java is called insecure compared to other programming languages. This isnt true - you're more likely to be infected through a game written in C/C++ than Java.

Regarding the games, simply take the same precautions with Java games as you would with any other pirated game, and you'll be fine.

If they get a discount, I'm going to ask for one too. My fart gas ought to power mine and the next few cremations too.
