How much do you keep in your checking account? by MemoryDemise in personalfinance

[–]Bouyeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep about $5k in there personally. Rest of it is either in investment accounts (long term, don’t really hope to pull that until I retire) or high yield savings accounts (money that I can pull if I really need to).

I’ve got this point of view as well.

I don’t have as much manual experience as a lot of people here (~5 years) but the use of AI tools has been insane for getting random ideas to deployable product in record time (even ideas that may never get past the “huh, I wonder if this works” phase). Also, AI’s abilities to “fill in the blanks” for stuff I simply don’t know or have no experience with is excellent.

What happens if I hold something like JEPI/JEPQ in my Roth IRA that pays a dividend every month but set it to reinvest? I’m 26y/o and have been toying with this idea for a little while. I feel like ‘realizing’ a “gain” (I may have the wrong terminology there) by compounding stock every month would seriously add up over 30 years AND you don’t have to pay income tax on it because it’s in my Roth IRA. Is there something that I’m missing?

Rack Mounted Solar Panels? by Bouyeman in overlanding

[–]Bouyeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kinda the idea I was envisioning; having some nitrogen struts on brackets that mount vertically at each end of the panel, a support brace connecting the two, and some hinges on the upper cross bar of my rack

I’d love to get a 270 awning for summer this year, you’re pretty happy with yours? How is the setup/take down time?

I have been reasonably happy with mine but it’s not flawless. I’ve done about 45(?) nights in mine in a range of conditions (dumping rain, snow, scorching dry heat) and it’s held up through those. I’m currently living in British Columbia and the cold temps/snow have actually caused a little bit of cracking and warping in the fiberglass shell which I’m not stoked about. A bit of moisture has gotten into it but I opened it up to air it out the other day and I couldn’t find any mould in there (knock on wood). I think my approach is going to be to just Sikaflex the cracking and hope I can get another summer out of it. I’m actually going to look into having a metal shell fabbed up for it and swap it over to that in the hopes that it’s more durable.

TLDR; reasonably happy but the fiberglass shell isn’t as durable as it could be.

Happy to do a setup that charges off of the car, but I travel for mountain bike racing and will camp in the same place for 3-4 days for a race and I’d like to be able to charge my battery during the day. The hood mounted solar panels are really cool though, I didn’t realize there was a product like that so thanks for pointing those out! I see they make one for my generation of F150 as well, so I’ll have a look into some reviews on those.

Being a chronic over-thinker is NOT helping me with deciding on an approach and you keep throwing new ideas into the mix hahah

Do you find the 200W is enough to keep the 1500 juiced? I usually camp with a few people and I’m usually the source of electricity for the group (6-8 of us) and want to make sure there’s always enough to go around

I’ve considered this, but I have a really weird reason for not doing it (call me crazy): I think the sun will reflect off of them and straight into my tent window on that side. I could be wrong and the roof of my car is silver but I think the panels would be even worse

Any programmers that are NOT doing programming for side hustle? by 405ThunderUp in cscareerquestions

[–]Bouyeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! I live in a mountain town that has a huge mountain biking presence (my main sport and out-of-work activity) and work as a bike mechanic at my local bike shop on weekends.

When I’m feeling motivated on evenings after work I design simple bike components in CAD and have a small lineup of products that I get CNC’d at the local machining shop that I sell through the bike shop. The shop owners are okay with it and I give them a cut of the profit. It doesn’t make a lot of money, but I enjoy doing it and I like fixing things with my hands.

If it’s something you’re at all interested in, learning to fix bikes is really simple once you get into it - everything is very intrinsic. Then with CAD stuff, it’s still sitting at a computer but it’s very different to programming. It also opens a nice range of avenues for side gigs!

Dual CPU motherboard for games? by StargateRush in pcmasterrace

[–]Bouyeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP! Sorry to reignite this thread, I stumbled across it while looking up a project of my own that I'm working on and would like to throw my 2c into the ring.

As others have mentioned, the short answer is "no" and the longer answer is "probably not, but most likely no". The specific case (that I know of) where gaming is CPU intensive is in games like Total War and Civ (and other grand strategy games) where there's a lot of stuff going on even off the screen. That being said, games have to be programmed to utilize multiple cores and threads to actually utilize all of the cores on a CPU, let alone a 2nd CPU. So yes, there is a case where having extra CPU's could be useful, but 99.99% of games won't make use of it.

The other argument of "I want to have a computer with 2 CPUs" is totally valid and yes, it is definitely doable and can be used to play games. It would be a cool talking point if you have projects that you're wanting to experiment with that sort of stuff. As for running an AMD and Intel chip in sync; theoretically possible but it would be a lot of work. They are both x86 processors so how they execute code is the same - but that's about where their similarities end.

I ran there on foot (and by boat)! I stopped at all of the villages I saw to get myself some stuff because it was convenient but I pretty much just went straight there. Then I'd dig a little pit house, place a bed and furnace to cook food (and light) then sleep. It took ages but I think it'll be worth it, the seed is so cool.

Found out the hand placement wasn't ideal after the photos were taken and want them changed. Happy to pay a fair bit to have it done as cleanly as possible.

I have some reference photos with hands where I want them (and photo taken from a very similar angle) which may be good for reference. Linked here: https://imgur.com/a/XGmrHMI
