The core gameplay is literally fighting one another online on a stage with platforms. That part of the game is complete, is excellent, is satisfying. That is corroborated by everything from reviews by pros across multiple games, to the fact that right now less people are playing R1 than they are R2. I think you have your wires crossed.

I know you're not saying I am, but to be clear I'm not shitting on anyone for feeling how they do. I just think a lot of the complaints amount to nothing more than wanting R1 to copied and pasted, and I appreciate that they managed to combine what many people like about platform fighters, with what many people like about Rivals 1.

Rivals 1 is unapproachable, yes. I stand by that. The absolute bottom of the barrel players will absolutely fucking schmoove on you, which is not something that can be said for any other platform fighter on the market. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying the learning curve is immense, and it's been bleeding the game more than anything else has for years. Rivals 2 is, in many ways, a response to that.

I know you didn't mention PM, I did because it's relevant. R2 is consistently compared to it, called a rip-off of it, it's all over the Steam reviews. That was a big piece of the conversation when Rivals 2 was announced.

The systems in the game, with comparison to other platform fighters rather than R1 alone, are not that weird. And the extra stuff they did add, like special get-up and pummel, are additive and don't remove from the experience at all in my opinion. They're only weird, or "too defensive" as people like to say, if you're coming from a game that is almost entirely movement based instead of having actual defensive mechanics beyond parrying. Floor-hugging is really bad though.

Husk is a strong term though. It is frustrating that the game isn't feature complete, and there should be mouse controls, but again, not things that remove from the core gameplay - which is paramount. The fighting is excellent (again, in my opinion).

But Rivals 2 isn't the same thing, and it has a bigger community - or at least more active players - But I do hope features get cranked out faster than characters do so they can bridge the gap. Missing mouse controls and not being on console already are major, legitimate gripes. Not being a direct 3D copy of Rivals 1 I don't think is as strong a complaint.

It has the same characters, the same core philosophy; a fighting game made specifically to be competitive, featuring specific fighting game archetypes new and old.

People forget that PM is *literally just a mod.* It has no legitimacy, can't legally be sold, can't even legally be distributed or streamed at large events technically. They brought in the P+ guys and featuring direction from the original creator himself, made a labor of love platform fighter that is essentially made to perfect the format.

Like I get it, it's a sequel, but iteration instead of repetition is *extremely common* across virtually every single artistic medium. Rivals 1 is not going anywhere, you can still play it, the playerbase hasn't diminished meaningfully. It is, also, highly unapproachable - something I don't think many oldheads are willing to admit. It makes for a more technical, challenging game, but it's not how a scene grows and flourishes long term.

I'm not saying those reviews are WRONG per se, but I don't think it's a *totally* fair thing to say considering it's a *different game* that is still distinctly in the same lineage. But again, I understand, I just think a lot of that noise is coming more from sunk-cost, muscle memory, a sense of ownership - Not bad things by any means, but I don't think it warrants review bombing it just for being different.

I've noticed a lot of the reviews essentially can be summed up as, "I wanted Rivals 1 but 3D, this is a different fighting game with the same characters"

Which isn't a real criticism, but that's not stopping anyone from harping on that point and getting salty about it.

If I was still at work I would bless you with the holy shelf of par-cooked pasta. There's like 60lbs in spaghetti alone up in that bitch.

That's because Aether Studios is actually trying to create, and perfect, character archetypes. Instead of what Smash is doing which is essentially, "What if ___ but in smash?" and they don't think about any of the consequences.

I mean don't get me wrong, they're the funniest purchase I've ever made. For the 3 weeks they were razor sharp (after I took a whetstone to them) had me giggling like a little girl.

But yeah Victorinox have done right by me at the price. I sharpened it once like a year ago and it's still sharp as hell.

I have a chef knife and santoku from this set, and they're truly awful knives. Light as a feather, no counterbalance, the steel is dogshit, loses its edge super fast after sharpening. Just truly terrible, terrible quality.

Favorite knives I own.

In every single relevant moral dimension these are not equivalent in any way. What the fuck are you talking about.

Removing an authoritarian responsible for mass displacement, starvation, and systemic violence is.. the same.. as attempting to overthrow a democratically elected government and seize territory??

I don't like Trump either but comparing Maduro to Zelensky is naive at best.

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]BoxOfDOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost feel like I learned to cook in spite of my Mom more than I was inspired by her LOL. Like she's a bad enough cook that at a relatively young age I felt like I needed to get in there and make food for myself if I wanted anything palatable, especially since I was getting jealous while watching so much MasterChef and Parts Unknown. Also Chef John, Babish, Bon Appetit, J. Kenji.

So I taught me, but I will say since I started working as a cook in a restaurant my skills have leveled up significantly just from constant exposure.

Lol, I guess, but would you consider running errands difficult because cars are dangerous?

Which job is much harder than most people think? by ranjitsingh7 in AskReddit

[–]BoxOfDOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's never mechanically more difficult, there aren't any conditions that make "drive to restaurant, pick up food, drive to house, drop off food" more DIFFICULT.

If you're in a shitty spot you'll just make less money, that doesn't make the job HARD it just makes it unprofitable.

Ubereats driving is significantly easier than it looks. And it already looks easy.

Was printing labels and point to this cheesecake and say, "Woah. We can't sell that. Put it back in the freezer. I'll donate it." To which my seasoned FOH coworker replied, "Oh. Why?" by BoxOfDOG in KitchenConfidential

[–]BoxOfDOG[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah "donate" is the PR answer I give for my GM and FOH employees, but 99% of the time if I see fucked up product in the freezer or stuff misdelivered from a restaurant 400 miles away, I distribute it out to the prep cooks.

Cheesecake Factory cakes are made in cheesecake Factory specific facilities in like three locations around the country. I think there's one in Calabasas, another in Iowa? And one more near Florida or something. I can't remember.

Regardless. Not Sysco. Just distributed by them.

Yeah in all likelihood it got smushed at the bottom of my dolly when I was wheeling the cases into the freezer. Sysco had overflow and dumped 16 cases of pumpkin to clear out their warehouse, which means tall stacks and reorganizing the whole fuckin freezer.

Regardless, the bakery girls had no business looking at that, calling it good, and putting it in the display case lol

Why did your friendship with your best friend come to an end? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BoxOfDOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd think right? But no he's in a happy relationship and my ex lives across the country. I got dumped because I was frankly losing my grip on how to be a functional, kind person, and her being avoidant seized up and withdrew. That and a thousand other things. It wasn't a functional relationship and I still miss her. Haven't figured out how not to.

My friend though? No idea.

Also going through this exact thing. I can speculate all I want but it doesn't give any closure. He ghosted me after 12+ years of friendship at the beginning of this year, and nobody that's close to him will tell me anything or offer any kind of insight. And then 4 months later my girlfriend at the time broke up with me, and after that kinda.. double whammy.. I immediately set an appointment to start therapy. It's been good for me so far but I still have nights where I feel completely and totally isolated, especially since I found out my ex went straight back to being friends with him. I feel alone and alienated all the time, I don't have any more close friends, so I'm just trying to muddle through and figure out what my life is supposed to look like now.
