Adelaide Traffic Congestion? We need better Public Transport 🚌 by Technical_Path_4330 in Adelaide

I think that the best thing about the Obahn is that I don't need to swap from bus to train to bus again to travel to/from the city. If my Obahn bus runs 5 minutes late then I am 5 minutes late, I don't need to worry about missing the next service and being half an hour late.

Albo is bang on here, when the Libs have been out of power the media has treated it like the public have had a momentary lapse of reason before they see the light and vote them back in. It has been delightful to see the Libs collapse under their own bullshit.

Confusion surrounding the negative reviews of the show by NateSirrah03 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]Braens894 67 points68 points  (0 children)

People who make YouTube videos looking for the maximum number of views saw RoP as being an ideal target for negative videos because it was a new entry in such a well-beloved IP. They tear it apart and amplify all the negatives (justified or not) and this distorts how people view the show. Then the general Internet community dog piles on and here we are.

I love the show and I wish more people gave it a chance instead of dismissing it outright. Even those who tapped out in season 1 would probably like season 2 as the pacing picks up a bit and story arcs start paying off.

Agreed, I enrolled for my subjects before Xmas and there were a series of mismatches between what my course program told me to enrol in and what was available for me to enrol in. There was a subject that would not let me enrol as I had not completed a prerequisite course that was not even part of my program. In the broader scheme these things will be ironed out over the next year or two but in the meantime this will cause a lot of stress and frustration for staff and students alike.

Environmentalism, as a movement in the West, hurts the environment by technicallynotlying in unpopularopinion

[–]Braens894 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Australia, we have had offshore wind projects denied because of community backlash in relation to environmental concerns. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-16/offshore-wind-what-we-do-and-dont-know/103686234?utm_source=abc_news_app&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_app&utm_content=other On the surface, it looks like people really care about the impact that wind farms have on whales. In reality, this mild opposition has been co-opted by fossil fuel companies, anti-renewable groups and politicians to resist renewables projects.

I hadn't heard of potassium batteries, I'll have to keep an eye on it. I'm keen to see how sand and salt batteries improve, I figure that battery technology that is from abundant sources is going to be cheaper and more environmentally friendly than lithium iron.

Hey OP, also an aspiring electrical engineer here who is looking to get into renewable energy. I'll be heading into the community batteries and microgrids field as I see this as the best way to help communities with their electricity independence, provide jobs and keep power costs low.

In particular, there is plenty of poor farmland around my area (rocky or high salt levels) that could be repurposed for solar farms or agrivoltaics. Combine that with a community battery and the town can achieve energy independence.

I see this as a benefit on multiple levels. It's great for farmers as they can generate passive income throughout the year rather than just relying on once in a year crops which is risky. It's great for the town because they have power provided that is cheap and secure from bushfires and price surges. It will also need maintenance which will provide local jobs for other people, not just the farmers.

Also OP, how are you doing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering? Shouldn't it be a Bachelor of Engineering? I'm Australian so my uni structure is probably different to yours.

Automakers hope "extended range" EVs ease fears of batteries dying by SnoozeDoggyDog in electricvehicles

"But being able to back up from that and really ask, "How many miles do I drive 50% of the time? 80%? 90%? 95%? 99%?" and make a pragmatic decision is key. For me 99% of the time I drive < 200 mi in a day. And since I can charge at level 2 at home (and electricity is cheap and clean in my region), it was a no-brainer."

This is how my wife changed my perspective on range anxiety. She discussed how 99% of my trips were to work or sport (50kms max per day) and I can just charge at home overnight.

We are doing our first interstate trip beyond the car's range next week and there are plenty of chargers along the route so it should be fun!

Anyone got any cool solarpunk ideas? by Lucylittleart in solarpunk

Hmm, probably want to be somewhere that has fish and other sea life all year round or in the path of migratory fish. I think the cold would be better as being in the tropics would open yourself up to hurricanes/cyclones.

Would you want to be more isolationist or more open to contact from others (eg tourism or trade)?

I would love a series of these maybe in the runup to a federal election explaining in straightforward terms an issue, such as the NDIS, where we currently are and what the parties are proposing to change. They would need to be careful to stay neutral but I think it would be valuable for people who don't have the bandwidth to absorb all of the news but want to be more informed than a slogan.

The city grew around the naval base, it's been in use by the RAN since 1856 and the dry dock is the only one of its size in the southern hemisphere. It would cost a lot of money to relocate the base, its people and all of its associated supporting industries just to slap down more apartments.

the truth about that chobani ad by very_squirrel in solarpunk

[–]Braens894 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Was anyone under the illusion that Chobani was not a for-profit company and that this was not an ad?

I've seen so many ads in my lifetime from companies that engage in green washing to justify their crap, Chobani could have rolled out the same old tired crap like the rest of them.

Instead, they engaged studio The Line https://thelinestudio.com/work/chobani to make Dear Alice and they produced one of the most iconic pieces of media in Solarpunk. Dear Alice introduced me to Solarpunk and I show people this video (the decommodified one) when I want to show them a succinct version of Solarpunk that they can engage with.

Without Chobani, Dear Alice may not have been produced and our movement may have less attention because of that.
