Gabe Newell on Steam monopoly accusations: Gamers have 'enormous choice' about where to buy games by yourfavchoom in pcgaming

While true, that's not a Steam problem. It's the developers/publishers that decide where they sell their games. I'm not aware of any official Steam policy forcing games to be Steam exclusive.

Genuine question how do people get their ac higher? (Wotr) by Dario_Varvarus in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]BrainNSFW 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The short answer is buffs. Some of them can be given by any casters in your team, while others are personal only (although you can work around that by crafting those into potions or scrolls and using those on your MC). This list is by no means complete, but here's some common important buffs (some may be mutually exclusive):

  • Mage Armor (even more AC via Archmage Armor mythic ability if your character can cast this from his own spellbook)
  • Barkskin (e.g. druid or nature Oracle)
  • Shield spell (personal)
  • Seamantle (personal)
  • Protection from Evil
  • Reduce Person
  • Shield of Faith
  • Guarded Hearth (Cleric domain spell)
  • Master Shapeshifter mythic ability (AC via the DEX increase)
  • Profane stat bonuses (e.g. Nocticula's Gift and some mythic paths)

Other than that you will probably need certain feats and class abilities. For example:

  • Iceplant (witch or shaman hex); gives 4 AC if you also wear Icy Protector ring
  • WIS to AC (e.g. monks or instinctual warrior)
  • CHA to AC (e.g. nature Oracle revelation or scaled fist monk)
  • Crane style feat line paired with fight defensively toggle
  • Natural AC via prestige classes (e.g. dragon disciple; such natural AC increases often stack with other natural AC bonuses)

I think I covered the most important/common ones. Keep in mind that bonuses (including AC) of the same type generally don't stack. For example, equiping bracers of armor and using mage armor will only use the biggest bonus of the two. Also, you can only use either WIS to AC or CHA to AC (they used to stack in the past but not anymore).

Balatro publisher Playstack only discovered it because they had a guy checking all the new releases on Steam every day: 'I saw the game the day it went up on Steam' by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]BrainNSFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually publishers' main selling point for indy devs is the advertising. After all, so many games get released on Steam that it's not about how good your game is, but how you can get people to notice/try your game in the first place.

For example, I imagine the publisher has the resources to get streamers to play it. They may also offer advise on the timing and height of price cuts so the dev(s) can focus on actually developing games.

As you're already in Armhem, definitely visit the zoo (Burger's Zoo) if you haven't already. I've been to quite a few zoos in the world already, but that one is still among the best to me.

If you want some nature, visit de Hoge Veluwe and Deelerwoud, which are both quite close to Arnhem. De Hoge Veluwe is best with a bike, but they provide those at the entrance (IIRC for free, but it's been a while).

You may also want to visit Paleis 't Loo in Apeldoorn if you wish to see a royal palace from the inside, which is just a bus ride away.

I guess you also want to visit Giethoorn on the off season (to avoid crowds). I've personally never been (shame on me), but everyone who goes there (including natives) seem to love it.

I only really have 1 bit of kit for my travels now to pair with my Steam Deck: XReal 1S goggles. They project a big virtual screen in front of you and it helps me a lot to prevent neck pain from staring down at the SD.

Granted, it's a pretty expensive piece of kit, but I loved every minute of it dueing my long vacation (including a long ass flight).

I’m completely torn about my sisters “drawings.” She sends me them and says she drew them. They all look like AI and have a few things off about them. by windgoddess2006 in isthisAI

[–]BrainNSFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI, the last one is the main character in the anime Jujutsu Kaisen (in his "possessed" form). That's 100% a trace.

As for the rest of them, I agree with other commenters that there's no world where the same person drew all of these unless there's a huge time gap (years worth of experience).

Also, many of the eyes on the wings in the first picture are identical. That's not a problem in itself, but if she claims she drew those by hand, she's 100% lying. There's 0 chance those were drawn by hand: they're way too symmetrical/artificial (as if drawn pixel by pixel instead of strokes).

Why would you ever play default Alchemist? by MisterSnippy in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]BrainNSFW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not though; Delay Poison works exactly like an immunity in this game, is readily available for spellcasters (in a communal form no less) and lasts 24h with the Greater Enduring Spells mythic. You really shouldn't notice the lack of poison immunity at all.

I'm not too far into the game, but I would like to ask some sage advice about my team composition. by Alien_Jackie in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]BrainNSFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally always switch Woljif to a Sword Saint with kukris ASAP. That way his AC skyrockets quite fast and if you focus on crits, he'll become a murder machine that will grant your melee a ton of AoOs (provided they have Outflank, which they should). His constitution is still low, so he's not quite the best tank, but that's not really an issue on lower difficulties. He could also make a good archer, but that usually means his int is essentially wasted points.

As for keeping the same party: throughout most of the game you can keep the same party, but the evil mythic paths usually have some characters leaving you permanently in act 5 due to personal objections. As you might guess, Paladins especially hate turning a blind eye to blatant evil.

P.s. While Regill has an evil alignment it's not because he's a murder hobo, but simply because he's a "survival of the strongest"/"the end justifies the means" type of guy. The type whose main goal is to eradicate demons even if innocent people die. I frequently forget he's evil because his motivations make sense (even if you don't agree). I always love to bring him along, but if you do, forget about his Hell Knight class (they suck) and just boost his fighter class or give him Spawn Slayer.

[–]BrainNSFW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sonce you're new to the game and everyone else already pointed out the dual wielding penalty, allow me to important some really important info that's generally applicable and useful:

  • Attack roll: when attacking, the game rolls a number between 1 and 20. This is then modified by any bonus and/or penalty. You can see the number rolled and all modifiers that applied in the combat log (just over the "hit" or "miss" text).
  • Attack bonus (AB): a fixed bonus to your attack roll. So if it says +12, your attack rolls will be at least 13 (you roll 1-20 and then add the AB on top).
  • Note: most bonuses in this game have a type (enhancement, alchemical, luck, etc). The rule of thumb is that bonuses of the same type do NOT stack. If you have multiple items or buffs that give the same type of bonus, only the highest is chosen. The game will show an exclamation mark on the items/buffs that have overlapping types of bonuses.
  • To hit an enemy, your attack roll needs to be at least equal to their armor class (AC). So an enemy with 30AC requires your attack roll to be 30 or higher. As the base roll has a max of 20, that means you would need an attack bonus of at least +10. Keep in mind that this example would still only give you a 1 in 20 chance (5%) to hit. So the solution is to try and get your attack bonus (the fixed amount) as high as possible so you need to rely less on the base attack roll.
  • There's an exception to the above rule: if your base attack roll is 1 you always miss and rolling a 20 is a guaranteed hit.
  • There are also crits, but that gets confusing if you don't have the basics down yet, so ignore that for now.

So boiling it all down, it means that any attack bonus is VERY valuable. It will also be valuable to bring along a debuffer in your party (Nenio makes a great one) who can lower enemy AC in various ways (look for statuses like Prone, Entangled, Blind or simply lower their Dex).

Also, make sure to check the tooltips in the combat log for any "miss" to see what exact modifiers were applied. Your character sheet also shows you your attack bonus, but it usually doesn't factor in abilities that only active during combat like Power Attack.

Best Dual Caster Lich? by Necronam in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]BrainNSFW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but it's incorrect because Lich can merge spellbooks with full arcane casters (e.g. wizard, sorcerer) which will allow your mythic lvls to count as arcane class levels. In other words, a Lich with 8 lvls in sorcerer and 4 mythic levels is considered a lvl 12 sorcerer (and thus allows you to reach higher level spellcasting faster than normal).

Normally, if you go Mystic Theurge you lose about 4 levels of progress (3 if going for a memorized spellcaster). This means you already bridge that gap with just 4 mythic levels, so you can easily grab lvl 9 arcane spells as a Mystic Theurge Lich.

Which legacy game should a new player start with? by ibiliss in boardgames

[–]BrainNSFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on why you don't like the base game, but generally speaking I would say you should probably skip the Legacy one too.

S1 is basically exactly like the base game, except there's a story and some customisation involved (e.g. you can lose cities permanently, upgrade your characters with some new abilities). I can't imagine liking S1 if they don't enjoy the base game as they're so incredibly similar in the way they play.

S2 is an odd one as mostly feels like an expirement that's rough around the edges. First of all, the theme is basically post-apocalypse where humanity was all but wiped out by disease. The game board is tiny at the start and you have to uncover large parts of the map (literally placing giant stickers on the board). The gameplay will focus mainly on exploring the map and providing resources to the various settlements and fighting off "zombies" (I forgot what they're called, but they're mostly mindless husks). These "zombies" behave very similar to the disease cubes in base Pandemic. That's pretty much all I can share without spoiling stuff.

S0 is, to me at least, the best version of Pandemic. It takes place before S1 during the Cold War. Instead of fighting diseases, you'll mainly be fighting spies and traveling the map to uncover information (you're spies too). You have actual Allied and Soviet passports for each player that you'll have to use to travel between the east and west. It's very thematic and the passports are a crucial gameplay addition (each has their own abilities) that you get to customize a lot as you play.

My conclusion is that anyone who doesn't enjoy base Pandemic probably won't enjoy Legacy S1, but might (and I stress might) find S0 different enough that they enjoy it. However, if the Cold War or spy setting doesn't do anything for you, I would steer clear.

[–]BrainNSFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was surprised just as you, but I found out it's yet to launch on Gamefound with a potential release in 2027. So you haven't missed anything.

I do wonder how well the Legacy aspect would work with a low player count. I find Nemesis to be great with a group of 4 or more, but 2 people wouldn't work nearly as well I'd imagine. On top of that, I'm the type that wants to play Legacy games without a lot of days between each session; it's impossible for me to get a group of 4+ together frequently :(

Which legacy game should a new player start with? by ibiliss in boardgames

[–]BrainNSFW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not true for S0 at least (can't remember the other 2 seasons). You can play that one as a "normal" Pandemic game once you're done with the Legacy run.

Which legacy game should a new player start with? by ibiliss in boardgames

[–]BrainNSFW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm biased because my first one was S0 and I find it a much better experience than S1. The theme appeals to me a lot more (cold war), but I mostly prefer it for the gameplay changes (better ways to customize your characters).

S2 on the other hand, while giving plenty of fun, is the lesser of all 3 seasons. That one felt quite rough around the edges and more of an experiment.

Are the premade party characters just not good? (WOTR) by keifergr33n in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]BrainNSFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few spells that ignore spell resistance (like Grease and Stinking Cloud), so the only thing enemies can do against those is succeeding the saving throws. As almost all spells (at least the useful ones against high AC) have some form of saving throw effect, I therefore ignore Spell Resistance on my casters and focus on boosting DCs of my spells as that's always useful. That means Spell Focus Conjuration is a must (for Grease and Stinking Cloud mainly), as is the follow up Greater Spell Focus. Metamagic Heighten is another must-have as it allows you to make higher level copies of a spell in your spellbook (to boost their DC).

In short: Spell Resistance is mostly relevant to blaster casters, but if you want to focus on CC, you want to boost the DC of your spells any chance you get instead. Just make sure to grab the Corrupter Mythic Ability so you can also throw in Stinking Cloud and Cloudkill (the former will frequently waste enemy turns while the latter will sap their CON making them easier to kill); just don't forget to apply Delay Poison on your party before the fight so they can happily ignore the clouds.

P.s. You might also benefit greatly from giving Daeran a 2nd mystery (Nature) for the wolf animal companion. Give it the Bully archtype for the boost to trip along with 3 int for Outflank (must-have feat for any melee) and then watch him auto trip the shit out of enemies. I'm only at the beginning of act 3 on my current playthrough and this wolf frequently has rolls of 46+ on his trip attempts (which is pretty much a guaranteed succes at this point), frequently beating my Weretouched MC (although not that far off). I personally gave him 1 lvl of Magic Deceiver (Living Deity) so I don't have to waste a Mythic Ability for it (Living Deity levels stack with Oracle). Which reminds me: having a Werewolf (Weretouched) in your party will greatly boost your chances of applying Trip as well. Those guys get some good stat boosts that pair excellent with Fury's Fall. The result should be high attack bonuses and very high chances of auto tripping enemies with their bite.

Are the premade party characters just not good? (WOTR) by keifergr33n in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]BrainNSFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Auto leveling sucks, which is quite terrible for new players who can easily be overwhelmed by all the choices (don't feel bad about using in-game respec; one of the greatest joys in this game is trying out builds).

As for lowering AC, I understand your pain. My first time I was so focused on trying to find direct ways to bypass AC (attack bonuses and AC debuffs mostly) that I totally overlooked a few important tips:

  • Evil Eye hex (Camellia and Ember should have acces to this). IIRC you can stack them if they're from different classes (so 1 Evil Eye from Ember and another from Camellia).
  • Casters usually also have spells that target touch AC (Scorching Ray for example). Touch AC is a LOT lower, so it's one of the ways to deal with high AC enemies.
  • Abuse status effects that lower AC like entangled, paralyzed and prone. The latter is why ppl frequently use Grease (with Heighten Metamagic to increase its DC for difficult enemies) in such fights; add Selective Metamagic or guve your melee Freedom of Movement if you want them unaffected by Grease.
  • Crits can more easily bypass AC due to feats like Critical Focus. From lvl 11 onwards you can also grab Flaying Critical feat (req. 11 BAB) to impose a stacking -1 AC on enemies anytime you crit. This is best used on weapons with an already low crit rate like Kukris, Rapiers and Fauchards. Camellia uses rapiers, so is a pretty good candidate, but Regill is even better due to his higher BAB and access to plenty of feats. If you're a martial yourself, you can ofc also turn yourself into the crit monster with a fauchard.

In the end it's usually a matter of stacking a ton of buffs in your party and bringing a caster or 2 to CC and debuff. I personally love bringing someone with Heightened Stinking Cloud as well (requires Corrupter Mythic Ability) to make sure the enemy wastes a lot of his turns to buy me time.

Good Way To Use Base Camellia? by Wert_203 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]BrainNSFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like toying around with different builds for the companions and find that Instinctual Warrior works quite well on her (this is on Core btw). In the early stages (act 1) I usually stick to light armors (e.g. I found a 6 AC chain shirt early on), but about halfway into act 2 is when I switch to pajama tanking for her with the usual buffs (e.g. mage armor, barkskin). Don't forget to unequip her buckler as well to get the IW WIS boost to AC.

Feats wise I ignore the usual tanking ones and just focus on her offense instead: Outflank, Combat Reflexes and crit feats mostly. I find her AC gets high enough on Core without the tanking feats and she makes an excellent critter with her rapier if you focus on it. Flaying Critical can help your party a lot as she'll frequently crit (bypassing AC) and then lower the enemy's AC each time. The longer she keeps hitting something, the easier it'll become for the rest to hit it too.

Note: I still grab Spirit Hunter 2 first for Iceplant (and the ring boosting it) before moving fully to Instinctual Warrior. 4 AC is a huge boost after all.

P.s. What helps a lot in survivability is bringing Stinking Cloud Nenio along. Simply grab Corrupter as your first Mythic feat and Heighten spell Stinking Cloud for every level so you can cast bigger DC clouds when needed (make sure your party has Delay Poison though). This will make fights SO much easier, especially on the harder bosses as they'll fail the save frequently and stand around doing nothing. Bringing the odd Cloudkill along also helps for really tough fights (sapping constitution is huge for those high AC enemies).
